Absurd Crowd Gasp sound effect 3 times in less than 1 min (MasterChef)

- This sound effect is becoming increasingly overplayed. When Masterchef used it 3 times in less than a minute I felt somebody should call them out on it. Any reality show with a large group or audience seems to be using this same audio clip several times per episode.
Feel free to post in the comments about times you've heard this sound effect used. - Zábava
It's amazing how quickly and decisively one cheap sound effect murders the mood entirely.
at this point I think the editors are just having fun with at and know how ridiculous it is.
one can only hope lol ... this was hilarious
Nah, I think they're seriously derranged
This sound was used in both Super Smash Bros. for N64 and Game Cube.
I remember it from Kirby Air Ride as well lol
I came here to say that, pretty sure that is the close call gasp
Well what the fuck, you're right! Everything snaps together now
Ok?
Even the cheering and whistling is fake. It's repeated over.
@Jegathambigai Thanapalasingam That's okay, and applause too
Seriously, this sound effect is ridiculously overplayed. In the Jurassic World trailer they use it as the big crocodile dinosaur thing eats the shark in the arena
let's hope it's JUST for the trailer.
mark daniel lmao that's the video I have travelled from, my friend.
Gasp!!! A cooking apron and a throphy WOW
FUCK YEAH AN APRON!
I love today's media music and sound design. Cooking, gardening or playing cards, Batman beating up villains, epic spaceship battles, rampaging dinosaurs - it all sounds the same. What fantastic times we live in, everything's so excitingly epic!
This is the new wilhelm scream
wilhelm gasp
@@cryomerk90 yeah that namr needs to catch on
1:02 SHING! Sparkle sparkle.
That crowd gasp! I even remember recognizing it in a Honeycomb Cereal commercial from the early 2000s after one of those Honeycomb creatures was snowboarding and crash-landed onto a banquet table.
when you get knee'd @ 300% but manage to survive that even a virtual crowd can't believe it. (i only heard this in melee)
This is used in Super Smash Bros Brawl too, lmao
WCPMachines and Melee
yes I have noticed this sound effect, I think it's hilarious, it's in pokemon stadium also.
Every movie and movie trailer uses this same sound effect. :P
im just happy that someone else noticed this, first time i heard it i laughed and said really, a stock gasp effect? then i heard it used 3 more times within like 10 minutes and i died laughing. great upload, thank you
Man of Steel, 1 hour in, when the power shuts off.
They just used it in some portrayal show on the History channel about the Romans that my grandpa is watching. I pointed it out right away and showed my grandpa this video lol.
LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! every freaking time they play that sound i have to laugh. its so freaking obvious that its fake, you would think they would try to do a better job of making it less obvious. Ive heard it a million times in a thousand other shows. lmao.
The Grinch (2000), Kevin from Work (Pilot), Fred: The Show (Lemon Fred), Fred 2: Night of the Living Fred, The Lion King 1 1/2, It's Fred! Fred Goes to a Funeral.
MrAcrizzy and house of mouse, and ice age 5.
Don’t forget CWACOM2!
I love how you can hear the trophy ring.
Back when I played Super Smash Bros Brawl as a kid I swear I heard the exact same sound or some really similar to it whenever someone would lose their final smash or something. Kind of funny to see how widespread certain stock sounds are.
"Hold my beer."
-SWOOOOSH! sound effect
I’m just watching Master Chef now, on season 3 and came to CZcams to find this sound effect to show someone it was completely pre-recorded…and I found this! Well done lol
Today is The 30th anniversary of it.
I think every sound was exaggerated. Amazing, as if they thought we would never figure it out.
Holy shit! My wife and I started binge watching these shows, and yesterday I heard this same exact minute while I was in another room. That's funny how its online pointing it out!!!
Also in the Fred: The Show episode called, Lemon Fred. When the customers were spitting out the Clam Juice.
You think this is bad? There's this stock crowd cheering sound effect that's used in just about every movie and tv show (and all other forms of media) since the 1990's, including Batman Returns, Phineas and Ferb, Jingle All the Way, Shazam! (2019), Thomas and Friends, Hidden Figures, Into the Woods (2014), The Fairly Odd Parents, Cory in the House (the episode "We Built this Kitty on Rock n Roll"), Iron Man 2, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance (heard once in "End. Begin. All the Same"), King Richard (2021), American Idol (heard in Season 8), Balto, Looney Tunes Space Race (Sega Dreamcast game. It's heard in the final cutscene when your character wins), The Blues Brothers (remaster version only), Free Willy, The Boys (this is according to the Sound Effects Wiki), Bakugan: Battle Brawlers, and even The Godfather (but only heard on the remastered 5.1 audio track).
Well, remember the Royal Wedding of Harry and Meghan back in 2018? Well believe it or not, they actually used this stock sound effect, but it wasn't just once. They used it, and I kid you not this was real, on continuous loop for 16 minutes straight (during the carriage procession)! And this was all during a live broadcast may I remind you! Just what the hell were they even thinking? This may be, in my opinion, the absolute worst offender of that particular stock sound effect. And don't even think about sending me this sound effect, because just like the "Baby Kate Cry" from Arthur, I cannot stand to hear this!
On a side note, do you know what the worst offender of this sound effect is (the crowd gasping sound)? Manchester by the Sea (2016). Someone pointed it out on another video, but they used it twice, both time Casey Affleck's character punches another guy. However, the second time it's heard, there is literally no one reacting as it comes right out of nowhere! I think the editor was lazy and just copied and pasted the same sound effects from earlier in the movie without double checking.
Update as of (01/04/2024): And now they used that stock crowd cheering sound effect that I mentioned in Oppenheimer (2023). That's right, the movie that I considered to be the best movie of 2023, has that damn stock sound effect it in, and as much as I wish I was fucking kidding, I'm not! They only use the second half of the sound effect, just like how it was used in Iron Man 2 and The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. However, that is not stopping me from watching it again, and just be glad that probably used it just only once, instead of on a continuous loop for sixteen minutes.
Another update (3/28/24): Another terrible offender of this crowd gasping sound effect is Austin Power: International Man of Mystery, where they used it thrice within a 30 second timeframe. It during the club scene at the beginning of the movie.
As for that other stock crowd cheering sound effect (the one that was also used in Batman Returns and Phineas and Ferb that I also can not stand), here are a few examples that I know of off the top of my head...
The Brady Bunch Movie (heard twice, a good example is at the end of Davy Jones performance of "Girl")
Thomas and Friends (Again): Specifically the episode "Rusty to the Rescue" (but only in the US narration, as the Michael Angelis narration omits it). I've also heard it a few times at the end of "Hero of the Rails".
The Flintstones (the 90's live action movie with John Goodman and Rosie O'Donnell. It's heard at the end.)
The Goofy short "How to Be a Waiter"
Hatching Pete (Disney Channel Movie. It uses it quite a number of times, especially during the parade scene). Other DCOM's that used it include Camp Rock and The Cheetah Girls 2
Criss Angel Mindfreak (It frequently uses it in a few episodes)
Into the Storm (2014 movie. It's during the graduation scene before the tornado hits.)
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood (Believe it or not, it's in the very first episode of the first season of the show. It's during the boxing scene)
Aladdin (the live action remake with Will Smith. It's in the scene following "A Whole New World")
SpongeBob SquarePants (another show that frequently use it, like the episode that has the "I Just Had a Sandwich" song and and also in the trailer for "Sponge on the Run")
Shrek 2 (2004, heard several times during the final act)
Hocus Pocus (1993)
Family Guy
Hairspray (2007)
Super Smash Bros Brawl
Disney's Sleeping Beauty (only heard at the end of both the 1995 and 2003 trailers),
The Nutty Professor (1996)
The Princess and the Frog
Robin Hood: Men in Tights
Into the Wild (2007)
Dragon Ball Super (heard briefly in episode 6)
Memento (2000, heard twice in the background in a higher pitch)
Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert (2008) (heard during the foot race scene)
The Book of Boba Fett (heard once in "In the Name of Honor". According to the Soundeffects Wiki, this marks the first time in Star Wars history that this stock sound effect has been used in the franchise, and I honestly expected to hear this in one of those "Lego Star Wars" specials, not an actual canon Star Wars movie or TV show)
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (heard briefly in "Ribbit and Rip It")
and I just found out recently it was used in 80 for Brady (2023)
I also would like to mention the game show Pyramid (the 2000's revival with Donny Osmond) where they use it at the beginning of every single episode when the celebrity guests are being introduced.
But to me, the worst offender of this has to be the High School Musical Dance-Along, where it's literally played over and over and over again (about 40 times). Every time the background dancers applaud, it's the same cheering sound effect, except for some parts where it the other one that I mention above. I think this is what an average person would of done after hearing this same sound effect for the 20th god damn time (czcams.com/video/vafyPo0REMs/video.html).
so oppenheimer doesn't have the opening YEEEEAAAHHH or the distinctive AW MAN YEAH then?
@@dukeofcurls3183 Yes. It does have the stock sound effect, but it's only the second half (just like how they used it in Iron Man 2). It's at the hour and 59 minute mark. And another thing, Please DO NOT send me a link to that stock sound effect at all! I wish not to hear it at this time!
@@TheJFish94 i mean props to them i guess for choosing to include a non-overused part of an overused stock sound
@@dukeofcurls3183 Ya' know what, I think any part of the sound effect is overused! I also found a few more examples. BTW, the name of the sound effect is called "Hollywoodedge, Medium Exterior Crowd "PE140401", with the second one that I mentioned is the "PE140501" version, but I am only focus on the first one. I did mention its uses in The Godfather (1972) and the Sound Effects Wiki states that it debut in the movie, but this is incorrect. It's ONLY heard on the remastered 5.1 audio track (Update: The Godfather's Sound Effects Wiki page has gone back and corrected its use to "remastered version only", but they still list the movie as the first appearance on the Wiki page for that particular sound effect, which they still need to fix). Anyway, here's a few more examples I found, and again, PLEASE do not send me a link to it! I will update it If I can think of anymore.
The Bourne Supremacy (2004) (2nd half only, minus the "Aw Yeah" part. Heard twice during the protest scene)
Saturday Night Fever (1977) (heard only on the remastered version. It's heard four times during the climatic dance scene)
Ma Raney's Black Bottom (2020) (2nd half only similar to "Bourne Supremacy". Heard in the opening scene if you listen closely)
Atonement (2007) (heard once during the newsreel scene at the one hour and 34-minute mark. Also uses the "PE140501" right before.)
Bruce Almighty (2003) (heard twice at the end of the movie)
Digimon Adventure 02: Hurricane Touchdown!! The Golden Digimentals (2000) (1st half only. Heard only in the uncut version. This would, however, later be omitted when the film was re-edited and adapted into Digimon: The Movie)
In the Heights (2021) (heard twice during "Carnaval del Barrio")
From Justin to Kelly (2003)
The Even Stevens Movie (2003) (1st half only. Also used "PE140501" alongside it similar to how they used both in "Batman Returns" with the "PE140501" starting first, then a second later, this one starts.)
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994) (2nd half only, heard at the end)

George of the Jungle (1997)
Good Burger (1997)
The Love Bug (1997)

Soul Surfer (2011)
Trouble with the Curve (2012)

Izzy's Quest for Olympic Gold (1995 TV short)
The Catherine Tate Show (I don't know what episode it was, but it was the "Posh Family" skit where they were at the egg rase. It's only the 1st half of it before it gets interrupted when the mom screams that the eggs are not organic)
Onyx Equinox
Captain Planet and the Planeteers (heard in "A Formula for Hate" along with the "PE140501" similar to "Batman Returns")
Sabrina: The Animated Series
The Goldbergs (heard in “1990-Something”)
Lightspan Adventures: Faire Games - Mathematics and Faire Games - Language Arts (PS1 Games)
Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (video game)
Dance Dance Revolution: Disney Groove (Wii Game)

The Girl (2012 HBO movie)
The Comebacks (2007)

Theater of Magic Pinball promo (it fades out during just before the "Aw Yeah" part)
Aladdin: Here Comes a Parade (Disney Read Along audio tape) (1st half only)
Big Hero 6: The Series
Hocus Pocus (1993) (2nd half only? heard at a low volume during the party scene after "I Put a Spell on You" during Winifred line "Dance! Dance! Dance until you die". It also used the PE140501 version twice during the same scene, once at the beginning, and then once at a low volume near the end of the song.)
Is that too much? Should I go on?
Another update: while it hasn't been released just yet, I have a feeling that it may possible be used in the upcoming Wicked movie, although I cannot judge that, because it's too soon to confirm whether or not it's in the movie since it does not come out 'til November. But much like rewatching Oppenheimer, it's not stopping me from going to see this, because I'm such a huge fan of the original musical which it's based off of.
I also forgot to mention, but there is a third one, same name, but this one is the PE141401 version. This one, even thought I still think it's overuse, I've gotten use to it and okay with hearing it. This was used in...
The Muppets at Walt Disney World (1990) (first appearance according to the Sound Effects Wiki. It's heard twice during "Rockin' All Around the World")

The Second Trailer for Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel.
I heard this sound in The Grinch.
I just heard this in the movie X-Men. Thank you for labeling your video well, because I didn't have to search very long for it.
*Gasp!* Three of the same gasps indeed! Oh, whoops.
0:28 - 1:01 - 1:25
yeah, is the same
they do it atleast 2 more times in the later episodes holy shit
Welcome to American television.
This crowd gasp sound effect is in a lot of Toon Disney shows!
Ripley's Believe it or Not used to beat the shit out of this sound effect when they had a TV show.
When you grab a ledge
Twice in Manchester By The Sea
The First Trailer for Kung Fu Panda 3 (2016)
I always noticed this sound effect in movies and TV. Now I'm really really really going to notice it!
This is in greys anatomy when Meredith confronts dereks doctor🤣
i love how they are whistling and there is a stadium cheer for the apron, but just a gasp and some claps for a book deal worth 10s of thousands of dollars.
I haven't watched over the air television for years now. This minute of television ensures I won't for the next decade at least.
That's not the only overused sound effect lemme tell you
play dramatic music, play gasp effect -> a cookbook is the greatest thing in the woooooorld!
It's the Wilhelm gasp.
Great set of ears. I love when this stuff is called out.
Just heard it in the 2012 Spiderman.
This effect was used in the new Spiderman movie that just came out. When Parker is thrown up against the lockers by the bully, you can barely make out this audio clip.
A book, a cube made of glass and an apron. Gasp worthy stuff!
I can get these sound effects being used in movies, but reality shows and real life situations? There was a big stink kicked up about a sound effect being used during the Royal Wedding.
It just got used in the most recent Friendship Games short, and I think it was used in Kirby Air Ride, City Trial.
Reality shows love to abuse the same old sound effects in their editing, but I hear this one everywhere. Pure laziness.
I noticed it twice in Godzilla.
you posted this comment on my birthday! lol right. point. and straight on my b-day lmao
editor here, um we have deadlines and we are not going to istock trying to find various gasp noises, we gotta cut and do it quick. soz doods
That last one was a complete exaggeration
3D Movie Maker, on 90's windows computers
They also use the same cheer twice. That cheer feels underused, but very outdated. Sounds like it should have been used in stuff back in the 90s only.
I hate this sound, too. I've heard it pop up here and there for a long time...maybe even since the late '80s. I want to say it originated on Fox channel 11, but I'm not sure.
After watching a clip or two here of with a montage of Wilhelm scream appearances in movies, I expected to see something similar for this very sound effect. I just recently heard it in some movie ad-it seems to get used a lot in ads for stupid comedies in which characters are making a scene in a public place, punching each other, dropping their pants, etc.-and figured it must be some inside joke. But still no montage (yet).
Wilhelm scream!!!
This was so obvious and cringe that I came looking for a compilation video. The stock sound effect to legit reactions ratio was like 90/10 in this opening...
A collection of paper, a big, useless chunk of glass, and a piece of cloth--It's pretty hard to get a genuine crowd reaction out of that, honestly. You gotta pump it up!
This sound was used on the Gravediggaz LP during the court scene. I've noticed it over and over since then.
UncommonRecords Yassss!! That's where I first heard it and I now hear it EVERYWHERE! "Diary Of A Madman"
Guilty. Next witness.
OMG! I used this sound effect cause it was the only audience gasp I could find, even then my thoughts were "That sounds fucking awful, but I guess it will do" To think big shows and movies actually use this. I now kinda wish I had used it more in parody.... I mean, yeah, that's why I used it of course!
I'm trying to find this sound over years! The first time i noticed was in that Las Vegas movie with Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher (edit: What Happens in Vegas)
I still remember this noise in the live action Grinch movie.
Hyndergogen9 good thing this sound effect wasn’t in the animated grinch movie that came this year.
I first heard that sound from an old CD I had called "Lenny's Multimedia Circus", used when someone falls off the tightrope
This sound effect is used in the third episode of the same season too, in Stacey's audition clip iirc
They seem so excited to be getting an apron.
I've never hated anything else more passionately.
They use it alot in movies and tv shows too. It really ruins the mood tbh. Same for the Wilhelm scream as well.
I also heard in it 2017's film Mother!
I heard this sound in the Pilot episode of Kevin from Work when Kevin gets punched in the face.
Spotted in law and order svu S17E7
I think that award was made by someone at my moms work, i went there and saw something the exact same shape but just a different writing on the top
I've heard this so much, I hear it all the time in CZcams videos. It's so funny to me that it's still so overused despite it being clearly fake.
The trophy is loud
"Ski School 2" during the end wedding scene.
THANK GOD!!! I heard it too! I thought it was only me...
where did this sound even come from? o.0 there must be a stock library somewhere
Rudolph the red nose reindeer the movie, GBA version of Donkey Kong country 2
I heard that cheering sound effect somewhere as well
Is there an actual name for this sound effect? I know there is a name for the Wilhelm scream but I can't seem to find a name for this one anywhere , not even tropes and idioms seems to have an official name for it.
This shit's literally everywhere. I think I first heard it in The Lion King 1 1/2, and I remember it being in the first SpongeBob movie as well (though I could be mistaken in remembering this)
Tristan McFrosty ninjago used this sound effect 3 times, the third one is from a recent season 11 episode!
This is in the Jurassic World trailer in the Mosasaur scene
The trophy is one thing, but the apron...? You could literally have that made for you, and it wouldn't even cost that much. Not that amazing.
shrek....
It's too bad because Masterchef Australia is such a great show by comparison
I wonder how much of laugh tracks, and cheer tracks, are genuine. Probably very little
It shows up in the background music of Gauntlet: The Dark Legacy for PS2 in the carnival area.
Master chief
I need an unmixed copy of this sound for parody purposes.
They used it twice about 2 minutes apart in Godzilla 2014, that was so dumb
Baseketball, during the will reading.
In the game Road Riot 4WD, when you run over spectators during a race... 😮
It’s in all super smash bros
Sound effects aside...where do I get those glasses? 1:13
just heard it in the angry birds trailer
Same and right!
