Jaguar F-Type V6 S Review - Poser's Car or Porsche Beater?

  • The F-Type sounds wild and looks mega, but is it a proper drivers car? Join me for a hoon on some fabulous roads to find out if it's just a car for posing or one that can mix it with Porsche's best.
    The F-Type in question is a supercharged V6 S Convertible with 375bhp - I hope this review gives you an idea of what the big Jag is like when driven as intended and slid around a bit, as well as what it sounds like, which is frankly ludicrous.

    Had my 3.0s almost a year now and have never taken the traction control off, mainly because black lines on the road mean less miles from the tyres (they don't come cheap) and I did all my sliding and drifting probably 30 years before this reviewer was born. A muscle car ? Not in my view. Powerful, nimble, firmly planted and utterly addictive it most certainly is. The power plant loves to rev, the gearbox is superb up and down the 8 gears and it is far to easy to enjoy the thrill and suddenly have a heart stopping moment when the speedo is checked ! This is the only car I have ever had that gets followed on dual carriageways and motorways for the overtakes..... it seems the noise is is appreciated by many others, and especially me ! The F Type is a car built to be driven, hard or sedately- it will do what you want when you want it. The ride is a bit firm, but it sure as hell helps it go round bends exceptionally well. i agree that it's not got the handling of a Porche, but the Jaguar F Type is so much prettier, and sounds much better too. That did it for me.

    • @AshrafonCars
      @AshrafonCars  Před 5 lety +5

      Totally agree, although I think it definitely does have a muscle car character in terms of its layout, sound and ability to lay black lines - it's still a hard edged sports car, though, which is clever. I'm a big Porsche fan and I'd take it over a Boxster GTS, it's just the more exciting car.

      How is the traction with TC on? I’m torn between the RWD and the AWD. Ideally I want the character of a RWD car, but I want to be able to put my foot down without scrambling around everywhere and ending up in a hedge!

    5:42 I think you've got the gist of it perfectly. It doesn't strike me as a car to be a competitor to something else. It's not about being best, fastest, most refined. It's just for pleasure of driving. It's pretty, it handles beautifully, it makes absolutely amazing noise. Gives you shivers - all those crackles and rumbles coming out of exhaust. The car was just meant to put a smile on your face. Certainly worked on you :)

    I'm in the market for an F type or 981 Cayman at the moment so this was good to see, I like a little drama in my cars (currently have an E92 M3) so I think I'm leaning more towards the F type S after seeing your review!

      I would imagine the Cayman would be a safer buy in terms of depreciation, I'm not sure how the Jag fairs?
      My other concern, is it worth having a Jaguar warranty & is it expensive?
      I haven't driven either yet but I'd imagine the Jag is more of an event to drive

    I really like these cars, they sort of look like a grown up Mazda MX-5/Miata, the cars share proportions and several design cues. I have an MX-5 but am lusting for a V6 F-Type with manual transmission.

    I had an XKR conv in 2012 which though beautiful, handled really bad as too much BHP to the back wheels. Now got an F TYPE V6S which is perfectly balanced and plenty of power as the 5.0 version I felt was over powered for this small car. Great exhaust, driving position and looks that can kill.

    This is a great review. You can get the switchable exhaust on the base which I had before the V8. Mapped it to 415 and it was great, but I always lusted after a V8 the whole time I had it. I could have bought a 911 but it just wasn't as exciting when I test drove it. Plus a 911 is so common it's more of a normal car which isn't my kind of thing if I'm spending that much on a car. Depreciations a bitch though.

    • @AshrafonCars

      Thank you! You're a lucky man - I did love the V6 but would have to go for the full fat V8 myself, too. Some argue that the V6 is sweeter handling but buy a Cayman if that's what you want - the F-Type is an entertaining wild beast so you might as well get the V8. Hope you're enjoying it!

      Thanks! I haven't driven the V8 F-Type but I've driven cars fitted with that engine. The V6 is fantastic and you wouldn't be disappointed, but I'd have to go for the full-fat V8 - it's insane and suits the character of the car a bit better.

      @@AaronMattheus I think it depends on what you want. If you want the lighter, sharper, more polished car for road and track then the Boxster is better.
