I was at this final. Quite a few of us Reds in the Everton end that day. All happy and jovial when Everton were leading. Once we equalised and subsequently scored two more a few Toffees started a bit of trouble. In my opinion this was probably the game where the traditional mixing of the fans first went out the window for the Merseyside Derby. Only a very, very small minority of Everton fans I stress were angry at losing the game and vented their frustration at those Reds present in the Everton end. Last lot of years the Merseyside Derby has lost all it's "friendly derby" reputation and it is very rare to see fans mix together now! Sad, but a sign of the times

I had a Kop season ticket - that only cost £67.00 and my dad and I hadn't missed a home game since 1978. However, only one of our season tickets qualified for a cup final ticket and I was devastated not to be going.
Then, on the night before the final, my uncle turned up with two final tickets that he'd obtained while doing a job for former LFC player - Geoff Strong. The tickets cost £6.00 each and the Wembley-special train down to Wembley cost £8.00 each.
The train was packed with both sets of fans and the atmosphere was magic.
I'll always remember an Evertonian guy with a ghetto-blaster playing 'it's a kind of magic' by Queen - over and over again.

A great memory. I never saw a football match at Wembley, only went there for the World Speedway final in ‘81. It was a fantastic atmosphere from a special place. The shadows on the pitch here create so many memories of great games. 1966, cup final in ‘71 etc. The distant haze from one end of the stadium to the other, all very nostalgic. From what friends have said, the new Wembley is not the same neither are the cup finals really, although inside the old one it was very old and in need of a revamp. .....Life goes on though.

The first goal conceded by Everton was just awful. Stevens gives a horrible, sloppy pass, then Mountfield gets nut megged whilst Ratcliffe gets drawn towards the ball leaving a huge gap for Rush to run in to. Completely avoidable goal and I agree Johnston defo got the final touch.

Me too - I was there. Travelled down (up actually, I was working in Chatham at the time) in the morning, ticketless. Met a buddy at Euston and set off to get me a ticket. Not a sniff (except for a couple of roided up cockney touts armed with an equally roided up rottweiler) things started turning a bit nasty, dog got excited, cockneys produced a couple of previously hidden telescopic truncheons and police were soon on it to break any 'transaction' from being completed.
I was bereft. Couldn't even get through the first of me four cans of ale.
Decided to go down to the coach park - made sense - early bird and all that. No luck after countless enquiries, then... A portly, well dressed, middle aged German took interest in my plea. £50 bought me a £6 terrace ticket. I was elated! The fucker still had three more tickets in his wallet!
This was hard work - two years earlier for the Milk Cup final a simple slide of a fiver to the gateman got me entry. But that's another story.
