  • Raan Jay Fai is a shophouse eatery in Bangkok, which was awarded one Michelin-star in 2017 in the first Michelin Guide to Thailand. Her real name is Supinya Junsuta, but she's always referred to by her nickname, Jay Fai, which means Sister Mole. Known for sporting some iconically oversized ski goggles and always wearing ruby red lipstick, Jay Fai cooks all the food herself with only minor assistance. World-acclaimed chef Gaggan Anand is a fan and a regular guest here, and was our guide for this visit.

    • @andersandkaitlin
      @andersandkaitlin  Před 4 lety +5

      It's very good. The crab meat is very good qualiy an she manages to pack a BUNCH of it in the omelette, so the ratio of egg to crab is ridiculous. She also cooks the eggs in a way that they're not too dry and also not oily despite being deep-fried basically.

    Can we also give some Michelin stars to McDonald's plz?

  • @MrHousetronic
    @MrHousetronic Před 5 lety +6

    I could accept that her food is great. I can't help but wonder though:
    Is the Michelin institution actually going down the drain...? Some of the greatest chefs have also started talking about that openly lately. I know that 1 star has to do only with food, yet I would expect a restaurant to also have some "basic decency standards" in regards to ambience and cleanliness... I mean, look at what's going on, on the floor and around her, as well as inside the "dinning room". I bet the local insect are having a "one Michelin star meal" every day...
    I won't even bother commenting on the pricing...especially in relation to the establishment as a whole.
    Although I haven't eaten there, I have dined in many restaurants around the world, and also worked in many, which were proper restaurants and their food was amazing! Still they had/have no stars. Furthermore, Michelin won't even go to S. American countries (if I recall correctly), where some of the best restaurants in the world exist, yet they have the time and the resources to visit all these little (and pardon my language) nasty little restaurants in Asia, and give stars like candy...
    It seems to me, and I feel that I am not the only one, that Michelin is promoting a "trend" in SE Asia, while the restaurants awarded don't have the necessary infrastructure to support their "stars". Let's not forget, that Asia is a huge part of this world, and as such, an enourmous amount of money and profit is at stake...

    • @andersandkaitlin
      @andersandkaitlin  Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks for your input! This is a big discussion for CZcams, but I'll comment a few things. I don't think Michelin is going down the drain, but they've had to change their business model. New guides are now sponsored by local tourism offices and big brands. There is no other way to finance it. Can they still be as impartial and unbiased as before? Perhaps not. Like everyone else, they have to make it to the news to get some good PR For their brand. Giving stars to street food stalls might have been one such PR trick. As for Jay Fai, the hygiene of the place was more than decent. A kitchen is always a bit messy. Her food is great, but probably not worth the price. Especially not for locals.
