Data Analyst here - no degree. Came straight from the military with ZERO technical background. Learned everything online. For those looking to get into this career here’s a high level plan I used:
    - Become an expert at Excel / Sheets and start learning to automate calculations and reports. Familiarize yourself with pivot tables as I find that a good transition to Tableau.
    - Learn a BI Tool - Tableau is a good foundation
    - Be proficient at SQL (Simple Joins, Subqueries and CREATE should suffice)
    - Be proficient at Python (Know the Pandas and NumPy library inside and out but no need to memorize everything - documentation exist for a reason)
And finally most importantly - be able to tell a story with the data!

My previous degree and working experience was irrelevant. I had an "administrative" job, I knew that this was not for me. I started learning python. Everyday after working hours, I was booting my pc on to study python. I got hooked, especially with personal projects. Then I focused on the data analysis/science libraries (numpy/pandas etc). Simultaneously i was refreshiny my stats and maths. Eventually i dicided to pursue a MSc in Data Science. Did it worth it ? I guess yes, but i believe i could had landed a job even without it. For those want to start with python i recommend you to check the Automate the boring stuff with python.

I love industrial engineering and for me in simple words as an industrial engineer i am called to make things better of course with an emphasis of generating more profit. So the way I see it is that for you to make things better you need to make decisions and to make good decisions you need to get the right information (data), analyse it and transform it into meaningful information upon which you can base yourself to make decision. So yeah I am pursing my industrial engineering degree and building my data analytics skills on the side.

I am used to work with SPSS and I reall really hate excel for statistics! But I have to admit the visualizations are nice. What I like on SPSS is that you can modify the syntax and create "unique" caldulations. :) I also like R and S-Plus but as I am not the programmer-type I have difficulties in the lack of WYSIWYG ... although the new interface of R is pretty much ok. I love doing data analysis but I am afraid, that my abilities are not sufficient for real big datasets. I have helped many many PhD and Master Students in Medicine, Social Science, Psychology, Psychotherapy and Economics with their analysis but usually they come with data of poor quality due to bad study-design. I usually say that I want to see the design first and maybe adapt it a bit, so the data has more information. I, myself, am a Psychology Doc, and I studied one year statistics but well.. that´s another story. I just want to say: I LOVE to work with data, but I feel "unworthy" because my brain is not even close to yours concerning programming ......and probably other mathematical stuff too.

Hey dude! Thank you for the essential information. I think you have never quit your job. You have just switched the way you are doing the job and simply left the company you worked for.
