  • For those of you who have been following me on my pottery journey, you’ve already seen my failed attempts at throwing a mug. Well, I am pleased to say that I finally succeeded. I was able to not only pull a straight and centered cylinder but was able to shape it into a mug! This was my first time making a usable pottery item and also trying my hand at trimming. I know this is all very amateur stuff for most of you pottery experts but it’s a huge breakthrough for me as a beginner! Keeping my fingers crossed that this survives the kiln (maybe I’ll do another video of firing and glazing if it does!)
    Wish me luck! And continue to watch if you want to see me try to accomplish my next pottery goal!

    You need to center the mug before trimming it.

      Thank you for watching! And yes, I need to learn a lot about trimming, my entire focus has been on throwing so far I attempted trimming as a fun thing to do. Any ideas on how to figure out centering for trimming?

    Okay, so I'm not the only one whose work always wobbles. How do you keep the wobble from getting bigger and tearing the piece apart? That always happens to mine.

    • @caligirlpottery822
      @caligirlpottery822  Před rokem

      After many a wobbled and collapsed attempts I realized that over correcting and trying to fix it didn’t work for me. So now I give myself about 3-4 tries depending on how wet the clay already is and then I just completely start over. But I’m also still learning so I’m hoping I will pick up more skill and maybe the corrections can happen while trimming? Trimming is my next milestone. Thanks for watching!

      Learn to centre and if you knock the piece off centre when you're opening or pulling learn the techniques to recover. You'll find examples on YT on how to correct mistakes whilst throwing if you search.

      Unfortunately I haven’t had any practice with trimming and I don’t have a kiln yet so all my pieces are just practice. But someday I hope to have a tiny studio to myself at home, after I get good 😊
