  • Discovering that your child is struggling with addiction is terrifying. In this insightful TEDx talk, Joanna Conti shares her personal journey of helping her own daughter overcome alcohol addiction. She unveils the challenges parents face when seeking addiction treatment and offers research-based insights she wished she had known about how to help someone you love recover.
    Joanna Conti, a former chemical engineer and the founder of multiple successful companies, became an advocate for addiction treatment reform after her daughter’s battle with alcohol addiction. Frustrated by the lack of transparency in the addiction treatment industry, her dedication led to establishing a research company that has closely studied the outcomes of over 70,000 patients in rehabilitation, offering critical insights into effective addiction treatment strategies.
    This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

    Way to go Joanna! As someone who knows Joanna and Karina personally, I can attest to the work they put in to creating a better life for Karina and their family. The work you’re doing - both of you - to share and support other families going through the same thing is the Lord’s work. It takes so much strength and courage to share stories like these, and I’m so proud of you both. It’s incredible that you’d dedicated so much time and effort into helping other families get the help they need. Thank you both for sharing!

      Thanks for the appreciation, bkm2797! Traumatic experiences, low self-esteem and self-medicating due to depression or anxiety often play a role in someone developing addiction. And, of course, genetics.

    • @karinaschultheis8164
      @karinaschultheis8164 Před 6 měsíci +3

      What was driving my addiction won’t be relevant to others, but the data on how to have the best chance at recovery is. I don’t know what caused my addiction. I was bingeing chocolate and hiding candy wrappers since I was a kid. Genetics certainly, not feeling as pretty as other girls, etc - nothing I can clearly point to. If you ask most addicts and alcoholics why they relapse the most honest answer is usually “I don’t know.” It is a mental obsession and physiological craving. What finally got me sober reflects the data here from thousands of other patients - I went to treatment, I lived in sober living for extended periods of time, and I got heavily involved in AA. I hope this helps.

      karinaschultheis8164,
      I am happy that you have a support system to help you recognize and learn to see what may have caused you to go into an addiction. I believe we are spiritual beings having a human experience, and earth is one big classroom that we choose to learn the lessons or not, meditation with a spiritual teacher can help a person to learn how to understand why they are here, and at the same time learn that you have more to you than the five senses. It's something you might want to add into your life, along with what you are doing now. You might want to check out The Monroe Institute. I thank you for sharing a bit of your story, and I wish you the Best in your continued sobriety, so glad you are back!❤️

The only critique of your TEDx is to protect those in early and long term recovery by not using the word "SOBER". We have to speak the language that doesn't stigmatize addiction. Thank you for sharing your experiences and all your hard work. Keep up the fantastic advocacy.

Just that 1 other human you can talk to freely and honestly... off load all your thoughts troubles and emotions release it and feel a little weight lift and breath a little easier. Tell yourself every night before sleeping your valid your perfectly entitled to feel how you feel and at least some one accepts and hears you.... REALLY hears you and understands. They also will want to see you succeed and grow so will push you and make you face all that pain, loss, loneliness....all those uncomfortable feelings.... I personally will make time to listen to you if you feel it could help xx

      @Joanna_Conti I cried looking at your daughter's photo w her babies... my younger brother used to look that way with his kids too. In the past decade or so, our family and I have had to watch him turn into this train wreck of a human being. My mom had to call the cops on him the other day. It's heartbreaking watching someone you love get carted away in handcuffs - nevermind that it's Christmas time and u can't help but think what a stark contrast from years ago...a house filled with laughter, music, and delicious smells wafting from the kitchen at all hours. Our Dad died last year. My brother got worse. I pray I don't have to bury him too. 🙏

      Oh @@tammydeplata2526, I'm so very, very sorry to hear about your brother. Please know that your wonderful, loving brother is still in there somewhere, although his addiction has taken over his brain. You and your mom may find a support group like Al-Anon helpful for your own peace of mind. And please don't give up on finding treatment for him -- there are some excellent free or low-cost programs, and there may well come a day when he's suddenly ready to confront his demons. Several of our family members didn't think Karina would ever recover and urged me to give up on her; I count my blessings every day that she was able to recover!

    Addiction is not a choice. It’s a progressive, chronic disease that kills daily. I know because I’m in recovery and I now work to save lives for those suffering from addiction.

    • @bkm2797
      @bkm2797 Před 7 měsíci +1

      Sorry, but it is a choice, in order for drugs or alcohol to go into your system you have to choose to put it there. There are deep reasons why some choose to escape their lives, it requires support with therapy and work on the addicts part to stay away from people and places that trigger them. Meditation with a teacher is a great way to go within and find what you are running from, sometimes it's not even from this particular life, but meditation works for most. Past life regression is another excellent way to understand yourself better, so seeing a professional in this field for a few sessions can be a lifesaver. There are so many modalities to help you feel comfortable being you so those cravings to self destruct become a thing of the past. Something to think about.❤️
