  • @Xaltar_
    @Xaltar_ Před 2 lety +40

    I doubt the pole piece spacing is behind the lack of articulation and flat tone. I have experimented a lot with that over the years and never noticed any difference tonally between different pole piece spacings (same pickup/s with different string spacing). More likely it's a combination of cheap pickups and pickup height, those look to be quite far from the strings, likely well outside the sweet spot for Alnico 5s. Ceramic pickups tend to do well (better clarity and tone) further away from the strings but Alnico like being a fair bit closer but not so close as to lose note separation. May be worth experimenting a bit, possibly also adjusting the pole piece heights a little too to better match the neck radius. Higher end guitars often come set from the factory this way.

      Eddie Van Halen’s frankenstrat was misaligned, and it sounded great. I just think the pickups didn’t quite vibe with this guitar.

    • @DennisAlvarezMusic
      @DennisAlvarezMusic Před 2 lety +3

      Yes, or maybe a cheaply made bridge? It's a Wilkinson type bridge. There's no reason they couldn't have put a Wilkinson on there. Wilkinson bridges are pretty good for the money.

    • @frankcarter2764
      @frankcarter2764 Před 2 lety +4

      For the money, that's a pretty awesome guitar. That said, I agree with Xaltar. I think the pick-ups let it down quite a bit. I would adjust the space issue and see if it improves the sound of the guitar. Honestly though, at this price point, investing in some better quality pick-ups is going to wake that thing up. It's a beautiful guitar by the way. Thanks for doing this video, I enjoyed it!

    A magnet swap in the pickups is always an inexpensive experiment. I found magic a few times doing it. A rough cast A3 in the neck, and a polished A2 in the bridge has been my go to. A great combo for some sweet blues tones.

  • @DennisAlvarezMusic
    @DennisAlvarezMusic Před 2 lety +7

    I'm in agreement with you on this one. Except on the pickup alignment. A cheaply made bridge can rob tone from a guitar. And I've heard that the pickups on this particular model tend to be a bit dark. Otherwise, very beautiful and well made.

    From Leo @ bangleburst. The last replacement neck I bought was $400. A good playing guitar for that price is a good thing. Before would condemn the pickups, I would experiment with lowering the pickup bodies away from the strings an additional 2.5mm and then raising the pole screws back up to maybe 1.5-2mm from the strings. . That will make most pickups sound more articulate. It is a good looking guitar.

    The website says these come with the "LAF" pickups, which I think may be a typo. I have the LAF pickups in the EX-76 and they sound fantastic, like a good PAF-style pickup should. None of the dark mud like this guitar. On the other hand, my CST-24T has the "HAF" pickups and sounds pretty much the same as this guitar. Usually hotter pickups split better because lower output pickups are really plinky and thin when split, so as long as you have the option to split, I think the HAFs are a decent choice.

So in comparison it was a bit ummmm. Then I set the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe mk 4 up for the Harley Benton. turned the amp up to 3, that on a hot rod in ya front room is loud. The Harley Benton sounded brilliant. So good that the Gibson Les Paul is up for sale. I bought a few more Harley Benton's. Set the amp for the guitar. At first impression I loved the guitar but though a set of Seymour Duncan's were on order. That will have been a total waste of money. I am so impressed with both my new fusion 3 Harley Benton's.

    Beautiful instrument for the price. Even if it needed a couple minor details remedied it’s still more for the money than a higher priced major name brand. The pickup issue I’d guess they spec’d the F-spaced pickups for the trem model guitars and just figured it’s close enough and saved the cost of a whole second pickup set just for the hard tail models. Anyway just my 2 cents. Awesome video man, really appreciate what you do in your videos.

    Bengal burst 💥
    Hi Andy, thanks for the review also highlighting some weak points / points to develop for HB. I like the way the Fusion -T HH looks, but for that price I also like the look of the Squier Contemporary Tele (with the black hardware and bridge rail pickup and neck humbucker), okay, no coil split (not a deal breaker for me, nice to have), no stainless steel frets and no unicorn sparkles (yes I like the silver blingy and the purple/pink blingy HB ones), but for 400 European bucks it looks they are, price wise, in the same league. The thing that still holds me of pulling the trigger on buying the HB are the pickups, bit too wide (pole pieces not aligned with the strings, my ocd) and, from what you showed, not the sound I may like straight out of the guitar, no amp tweaks. Regarding the pickups, are the misalignment and sound something one can easily fix with swapping them for 50mm width humbucker? Because with the modification on the HB, it will easily pass the €500 limit I guess, but is it worth the “investment”. Something else, Is it also possible to have it modified by Thomann when ordering? I do think for some models, like the Fusion-T HH and the DLX models, a custom made option may work, call it “Thomann WorkX option” 😉
    Cheers,
    Faizel

    Bengal Burst!!!
    I own 3 Harley Bentons, and they all have small issues, but to me at least, that's the trade off for the value of everything else. My Fusion Pro (1st gen) has had string trees added and a couple of DiMarzio humbuckers (extravagant, but if anything fatal happens to the guitar at a bar gig, they can probably be salvaged), my DC Juniour (fat) is stock, the pickup and truss rod cover are slightly misaligned but everything works. Finally my FLT tele was the worst; crap fret job and nut - sorted by a local luthier and plays great, I fitted locking tuners last year, lastly it would benefit from a hotter bridge pickup.
    I really think the biggest issue with these guitars is the pickups, but they are made to a price point and swapping them can be a great introduction to modding your guitars - and the QC, while not perfect, seems to be improving.

    A Harley Benton, like this Bangle Burst Fusion-T, is a mod platform.
    Harley Bentons should always come with pups that are not too good to replace.
    I replaced the Roswell pups of my SC Custom II with a screaming hot set of Tonerider Generators and I'm not sure, but I think I have CTS pots in it.
    To me, this guitar is longing for Tonerider Birmingham or Rocksong, rather not the Generators. I think double white humbuckers should look nice in this guitar. And according to what you said in the beginning of the video, you should get the normal spacing.
    It's just my personal preference, but I take vintage taper for the tone control. Thomann sell Mojo Tone CTS vintage taper with a P/P. Audio taper for the volume, of course.

    Bengal burst looks good. I've been wanting An HB Fusion T so bad I can almost taste it but I'm afraid to order. I live in the USA and have heard people on North America have had real shipping problems trying to get a Harley Benton. As affordable as they are, that's still a lot of money to have tied up and end up waiting a year to either get a guitar, which could be damaged in Shipping or, be disappointed and get a refund. I'm far from being the only one who lets this keep me from ordering. Seems like it would be worth it to Thomann to work with someone over here and ship in big lots and have stock here. They'd definitely sell. I'd be in for 2 or 3 different guitars, amps, cabs, effects, the works. Behringer would definitely lose a lot of business in North America as well as Squire and others. Ah well. I'll just wish in one hand and ...... lol. Thanks for the review.

Seymour Duncan Phat Cats on the high end and Metallor on the low price end are both great sounding and come in humbucker dimensions to fit, not to mention the 52/50 bridge/neck sizing. Very thorough step by step Review - Bengal Burst & loud orange colors not my style ? but HB has many choices in black or blue shades for nice contrast with that deep roasted maple neck! - Honestly I'm over the moon with HB - can you find even ONE budget model by Epiphone or Squier, with stainless steel frets ?? NO! - I did buy a Sterling and, discovered cut corners in many areas - I'm NOT shelling out $4000 for a Ernie Ball Music Man, or even $1000 for their cheap ass Sterling.

    Bengal burst. I like that you did qualify that the tone might not suit your playing style. You're right. I did not like the focus that you had on the finish roughness on the headstock. Seriously? Five seconds with a polishing pad, solved. I own guitars at 10 times the price that had more significant issues out of the box. IMO this model, the couple I own, punch significantly above their weight class, and significantly above most $1000 guitars. We'll agree to disagree.

    I got mine roughly 2 weeks ago. Everything perfect except that same finish problem on the neck. Ive played it a bunch every day and it hasnt gone away. And I say problem loosely. Because it doesnt bother me. Just something I noticed. I replaced the pickups with some humbucker sized p90s before ever plugging it in so I didnt notice it the pole pieces lined up right or what the tone was like.

    I thought Henning was your favourite neck, Andy?
    Dream specs, no more upgrading necessary (except the humbuckers) with stainless steel frets, roasted neck, locking tuners, graphtec nut, accessible trussrod wheel, there is so much to like!
    A very good strategy by HB, which brought Ibanez to their success from the seventies knockoffs up to high spec originals of today.
    I am curious if Henning would like this guitar, having all these features he is fond of. But will the dots be in the middle? ;-)
    So, would you upgrade the pickups and still be happy with the value if you spent another €200/300 for decent buckers?
    If someone likes this guitar, just buy it and do the pups later after you saved some extra money.
    What is Bengalburst?

    Going over the Squire/Epiphone stock in the same price range, you get less and have poor pickups too (let's not talk about double price MIM trash...), so in the end with a pickup swap this baby can really shine and still be at a good price point. Friend of mine has it, he put a couple Di Marzios he had in the box and the guitar it's an absolutely beauty to play and to listen to,all in all it's a good buy. Imho the biggest problem with HB guitars is the "not constant" quality control, some are really good...others are terrible.Anyway the misalignement of the pickup poles does not impact on tone at all,poles height does as well as pots value.

    the neck cut near the joint is way better than a conventional bolted neck..and i am expecting that neck to being really great. medium jumbo frets is also good news.
    i’m thinking it will be hard to install a tradional tele bridge and PUp…but i believe it will be worth.

    I think that you may well have got 224 a visit to the manager's office and very possibly his UB40 equivalent. At the very least a 'team talk' where strong words will be spoken about a certain Bengal Burst.
    She does look lovely but if she has no voice then she doesn't get signed. Tone, like so many things is subjective and it wasn't there for you, I will take your word on it (it is after all why I watch you) as CZcams compression steals away all the tone/sound of any guitar. Also I wouldn't worry to much about misaligned pole pieces, I have spent a lifetime swapping ill fitting pick ups into my guitars to no noticeable detriment. Not a criticism but you didn't make note of said pick ups height, that will probably play into the clarity that you do or don't get, I imagine that they must have been fine or I am sure that you would have mentioned it, I know you to be diligent on such matters.
    Nice video Andy, I am sorry that I have missed quite a few, I will endeavour to get back on track, life got in the way. 🤣

  • @Kevin.Hearty
    @Kevin.Hearty Před rokem

    The reason the Fusion T pickups sounds weak is because they're mounted directly to the body and can't be adjusted close enough to the strings. Harley Benton use cheap foam below the pickups which cause this. Apart from that I thought the Fusion T was a fantastic value for money guitar. If they'd only mount the pickups with pickup rings........

    Maybe swaping the capacitor for another values (0.15 uf, 0.33uf, 0,27uf), 10-15 cents each will improve the tone....

    I have the Harley Benton Fusion mk2 Strat, and was lucky to find a mint unplayed fault free sample at a sensible price.
    But the first thing i did was change the pickups, HB stock pickups are not the best, and i can only think that this is how
    they keep the prices low.
    Sad to hear about the finish issues, this is typical of these guitars, you just as likely to get a bad one as a good one,
    i would be returning that sample.
    A better sample with new pickups that align correctly will give you a good guitar, but out of the box the all important
    clean tones are not for me.

    Thanks for the objective review. As I understand it, the Harley Benton Fusion-T HH HT is a good, beautiful instrument. With a convenient neck. Lock pegs and hard bridge, combined with fried maple fingerboard, will provide the owner with comfortable learning and playing music at home. If you want more- modification of pickups, or consider other options. However, the replacement of pickups may not meet expectations. Good luck to everyone.

    I do love that bengal burst, it looks insane. One of my guitar has "misaligned" pole pieces and that's not it man. I wouldn't give a rats ass about that. Probably just the character of the pickups that's not to your liking. Personally I'd throw some Bareknuckles in it, a holydiver in the bridge and a stockholm (that's a p90) in the neck. But then again, that's my taste and I've been wanting that pickup combination for a while now.

    Second guitar? I mean, who buys gear to be the second? Or is it just me who not? Whenever I buy a new guitar, it will be my No.1., my favorite, my love. Later it could be sold or become part of the collection as a second, third, etc., but buying something to be the second on purpose? That Bengal Burst looks really pretty, and IMHO that is half of the show. If it is in the room, and it is nice to look at it and make you grab it and play with it then it is a good guitar.
