  • Just a little quick discussion about the stock XR650R carb, and common modifications to get them to run a little better. Will this bike start after 6 years+ sitting in a barn??

    One of the best bikes ever made. I wish Honda would have kept that bike around just with some modern updates. May the XR's live forever

    thanks for showing the carb. and the restricted boot. no one has mentioned that boot to me and all the videos on the xr650r, i have not seen that. i have an '02 that i had the carb. as it was 20 minutes kicking before it would start. now, it is much easier to start. will order the boot even though i don't know if it has a restricted boot or not.

    Mine was leaking gas too. I just removed that metal clip that's attached to the float needle. Apparently it's not necessary for the functioning of the float, it's just to help installation of the float needle with the floats. I think it was bent causing the float to stay open regardless what the float level was. Went right away once I removed it.

    kick it through 5-10 times while holding the decomp before you start it. It wets the cylinder a little bit, mine would always start 1st kick if I primed it. also if you drop it, kick it through with the decomp about 10 times while holding the throttle wide open, then go to tdc, decomp, about an inch over and kick through.

    • @theailer
      @theailer Před 4 lety

      I do the same with mine. If it's warm outside mine will start with 2-3 priming kicks. And make sure you have the "fire suppressing screen" in the airbox when kicking over WOT. I've had to remove the side cover in panic once ;)

    G'day bro nice XR. I'm from Australia and bought my XR650R new back in 2000. Hey looking at that air restriction opening between the carby and the motor could be about 1 inch, mine was about 8mm of gap for air to through

    It will start one kick if you cycle it with decomp lever a few revolutions
    And draw fuel through the carb into the chamber, then get to tdc and one kick, you’re thumping

    If you swap the original carby with a 38 or 42mm flat slide it makes the throttle response way more snappy, instant power when you roll on the throttle. Also when you back off the throttle it is alot smoother it doe s not try to throw you over the handle bars

    My xr650r was leaking fuel the same way. I found that the material inside the original petcock deteriorated and was blocking the float needle from closing all the way. I installed a new petcock, cleaned the carb and it never leaked again.

    i recently got a 2002 xr650r and it only seems to run somewhat decent when the choke is all the way on, even then at higher rpm it kind of sputters. but if i take the choke off, it will still idle but when i twist the throttle it instantly bogs down. i already put a carb rebuild kit and cleaned the carb, made sure there wasnt any cracks or rips in the intake boots. any suggestions?

    • @victoroneill4381
      @victoroneill4381 Před 2 lety

      sounds like carb related issue but could also be spark related,blown head gasket,check for good grounds especially at the coil,also could be stator on its way out.

    mrduhfactor I have a drz400 and did the BBK and a little bit of head porting . I'm wondering about other head work i can do for more flow .

    • @MrDuhfactor
      @MrDuhfactor  Před 3 lety +1

      Howdy Mike! The only way to truly know how much porting, where you port, etc you need to do is with a flow bench. It always surprises me how the wrong porting can lose port velocity and flow. I dont have a flow bench, so I have Lindsay Machine Racing in Sandy Utah do my heads. You can increase flow by upsizing valve sizes by 1mm (Ferrea valves only), going with a bigger cam, and flow bench measured porting. Keep in mind that bigger ports, or air movement doesnt mean more power necessarily...... If you maximize port flow with all that head work, you'll want a big bore kit, a stroker crank kit, good flowing exhaust, and at least a 39mm FCR or similar carb.

    Love it! Even though you richened up the jetting, does removing the choke flap and replacing the intake boot supposed to eliminate the need to open up the airbox? Please keep us posted on this minty red pig.

    • @MrDuhfactor
      @MrDuhfactor  Před 4 lety +2

      Howdy folks! I understand that these bikes are jetted pretty lean from the factory, so most people richen the pilot circuit to compensate for that, and, the fellow that owned it before me opened up the exhaust, which makes it run a bit more lean too. The intake boot doesnt seem to affect the jetting, at least on the low end, but its hard to know for sure because I havent had it on the sniffer to be 100% sure. It is running excellent now though, so I think Ill just leave it unless I open up the airbox, which yes, may make it even more lean....... ;)
