BRADFORD (UK) TO PAKISTAN BY ROAD

  • In 1993 a trio of Bradford taxi drivers, FAZAL, PATRICK, AND AZAD, decide to buy three used Transit vans in Britain and drive them overland all the way to northern Pakistan. Their plan is to sell the vehicles on arrival at a nice profit, and then to celebrate the Eid Muslim festival with their extended families. A quirky and often comical film, the “Punjab Road Runners”, charts their stumbling passage through Western Europe, Eastern Europe, and Asia (50 minutes)

This bought back many memories as I did the same route by bicycle in '95. Similar run around at East European borders, extortionate visa prices and the mucking around with many visits whilst applying for the Iran visa in Ankara. My buddy's application was rejected for no reason and I just got given a 5-day transit visa. Luckily this was easily extendable once inside Iran. It's a shame because the Iranians were the most hospitable & helpful people I've ever encountered. It's easy to forget that back in the early 90's no one had mobile phones or internet to hand instead relying on info from other travellers mainly...

I can't even begin to imagine how hard a trip like this would have been at the time. You would have needed to bring a few more currencies (this was pre-Euro), GPS wasn't accessible to civilians, the political landscape was very different, I would have to spend a solid month at libraries doing research and phoning embassies to ensure all my papers were in order. Keeping family at the destination and back home informed would involve sending off postcards or if you could afford it, making a phone call (and international calls were *expensive* back then).

This is an incredible video, I just love it. I’ve driven many of those roads as I’ve lived in Europe and Asia and always loved long road trips. I know this was a long time ago, but rearding visa issues such as the one you experienced in Ankera , the golden rule is avoid any embassy In a capital city and instead find a consulate in as small a town as you can find one. There is always consulate near the main road border in my experience. Also when dealing with border staff, never show that you are annoyed, keep smiling and laughing and when they ask for money just try and laugh it off as a joke. Also if a small border opens at 6am try and be there at 6am, it’s amazing how easier it is when they are half asleep. Driving in Turkey today is basically very similar to driving in UK! No need for concern or anxiety.
