- The story of three taxi drivers from Bradford West Yorkshire Fazal, Patrick, and Azad driving to Pakistan in old Mk2 transit vans in the 90s in time for the Muslim day called Eid . A route taken by many British Pakistanis and the reason why so many old british ford transits are in Pakistan with most still going strong.

8 years since upload and still finding its way to people's viewing. Glad you're all still enjoying the documentary.
Thank you so much for this!
Mate this is mint like a cheap top gear 😂
This just popped up in my feed, I like it
Thanks so much for this, my dad did a similar journey when I was very young, and this helps me to understand. So grateful for the upload
Pure gold! Thanks for sharing.
Sat here at 6am watching 3 blokes drive from here to pakistan. Why am i so fascinated by this lol.
Same bro I have work at 9
Me too. The best thing I've seen in years man... I'm watching it for the second time it is that good lol
Funny. I watched it at 6am the first time
Seems life was better then, doubt you could drive this route today
Same. It started playing as I was heading off to bed at 2am. One hour later and I was still sat up in bed on the edge of my burned out seat XD
For me what stood out, the most is; these guys drove without sat nav/google map!
And no mobiles to stay in touch with each other
@JM #7 RACING Had to be a dick, didn't you?
@@VideosofIrishFarmingLife welcome to the life of the European truckie in the 80s !
Lost Azad at one point! I wouldn’t of bothered trying to find him if it wasn’t for getting the van back.
3 old transits, wouldn’t of liked to pick up the fuel bill!
“The clown had put a load of burnt out seats on his roof rack” loool. The narrators passive aggressiveness and accent made this far more hilarious than it should have been. Brilliant doc
It’s March 2021, Covid & all that.....this is the best thing I’ve watched all lockdown. Bloody brilliant!!
I have to agree with you mate!!
This is looking like comedy gold!
Same here

@Benson Hedges that’s only when we watch the royals. :-)

My late father drove this same ford van in 1975 from Birmingham to Pakistan

@Taj Sidhu for the road trip experience, totally different experience from flying

What a shame they didn’t just head for the Iranian border and apply for transit visas. That’s what we did. We drove the same route in 1998 and we couldn’t get Iranian tourist visas, so just went to the border and got transit visas. We drove independently U.K. to Kathmandu and back. 18 countries, 22,366 miles in 12 months in an ex-British Rail Sherpa canteen van. Awesome 😎
Wow
That sounds so cool. I just about did London to Edinburgh and I'd had enough! lol
In Australia we are not connected to anything. Even if cars were to take a ferry to papua new guinea there this new island is still not connected to the rest of the world!
The tri-continent Eurafasian road should include AUSTRALIA!

I think every group of friends has an Azad.
He's the Pakistani version of Dave, everyone knows a Dave!

My Late father used to always tell me his story of driving to Pakistan in the late 70,s of early 80,s . . I was always inspired as a child that how amazing it would have been to see all those countries with language barriers and no mobile phone or sat nav.
Life was more adventureous before and less now with all this technology
kiddiecarbeds
I was a truck driver back in the early nineties driving to all the Eastern Europe countries. Yes, it was more fun b4 all the technology came. The lined up trucks at the border brought up memories.
Virtually impossible to lose someone or get lost now with mobiles and sat nav!
my father did the same journey in 1978 he always used to tell us about all these different countries he drove through

This from a man whose friend had 3 different passports with different names/dob's, and who didn't seem to see this was highly suspect! I doubt very much that he had anywhere near 8 O levels

What a fantastic film! I saw this when it was originally on TV and had tried to find it but couldn't for the life of me remember what it was called. It's just as good to watch almost 20 years later. This is the best narration ever of a documentary in the history of British Television. He manages to find a perfect balance of annoyance, irritation and impatience. Thanks for uploading it!
A lot of annoyance, irritation and impatience it has to said !!!!!
Much agreed. I can't imagine he had to pretend to be pissed off 😂😂😂

How did this get recommend ? What a gem of a journey. I knew Azad was trouble the minute I saw those burnt out seats on top of his van.

The wold pre-9/11 is almost like a dream. I was the same age as the teenager/son at the time and remember the shell suits and reeboks lol
I really enjoyed this. I was in Pakistan twice in 1997 , once for a month in Feb 1997 and 9 weeks in end July to early Oct 1997. I had EID and Ramadan there. It was great, very friendly people. I thoroughly recommend it especially Chitral and I wish I'd spent more time in Chitral, Tirich Mir at Shogram where there was a public holiday and a spectacle of Polo match and so many people travelled there to the highest village before Tirich Mir base camp the highest mountain in the Hindu Kush at over 25000 ft. It was great to see the carrabean guy going with you. He will have such lovely memories for his whole life and you have so many surprises, meet so many different nationalities like I did at the Tourist camp Islamabad where I was broke but shared a room with 2 kind and interesting Kurdish refugees who told me so much of their life stories and how much they struggle having no country. Doesn't politics stink but the people normally are lovely and often the poorer they are the bigger their smiles and hearts. God bless you all and thank you for sharing your travels here. I'd love to go myself in a truck, minibus or privately by local transport and now Afghanistan is open too
I got a letter of recommendation for Iranian transit visa in 1986 but due to time constraints I flew with my brother to Delhi then went to Nepal after 5 days in Delhi as it was so full of people and touts we weren't used to but I've been many times since mainly staying in the mountains and valleys like the Yarkhun Valley. There were Shiite Muslims in Yarkhun valley who wore very colourful clothes and they really were a delight to meet as were Kailash and Sunni and afghans of different cultures including ones from panshir valley who were refugees. The education and seeing life on travels is truly a blessing and education even if some things are shocking but that's often counteracted by the warmth, humanity, kindness of the people who put many of us in the west to shame.
I’m recovering from heart surgery and this is too funny!! Real British humour! My chest is sore from laughing!!!!

Thanks for letting us into your lives and some of your cultural stuff and then the problem you was having with your friend but at least you had Patrick to help keep you normal till you got to your family in Pakistan 🇵🇰
Nicely put :)
Im 44 years old and my dad told me that we did this trip aswell in the 70's i was only 2years old so dont remember at all my mum and sister who was 3years old with my dad. There was a convoy of 5 vans all 5 had 1 family each in the van all 5 friends from the same place in pakistan azad kashmir. My father told me it was the best trip he ever took and loved it so much i wish i could recreate this trip as a memorial to my father who passed away 4 mnths ago. I dont think its that safe to go now with all the wars going on in the way
I remembered this programme as if it was yesterday when I saw it on Channel 4 in 1994. The filming was done in 1993, but broadcast a year later.
You sure? This looks more 80s than 90s. And man the fashions are pretty bad here.

FANTASTIC COMMENTARY!!
Life before 9/11 and corona virus was so adorable..!
Yes, it was, we have now been robbed of that beautiful world by a group of corrupt power crazed monsters, the 99.9% need to make a stand and reclaim our world back!
Ordinary people doing extraordinary things, great!
That would be a great trip to make but one of the joys of travel is experiencing the different foods along the way to me.
Yes, i agree.
They could have at least tried.
I am sure there would have been veggie options for them.
@Benson Hedges You make it sound so simple. When these people came to England, they got loads of racism which is what caused them to segregate in the first place as it felt safer ..... then they get accused of not mixing.
Love between 2 races. Harmony
Now , Love has grown cold in people
Just a much nicer decade to be alive I think.
Fantastic. Love the guy telling the story. Al humdililiah

@Davy this has brought back some great memories for me, I did the same trip in 1976 (Derby - Ghorghushti 50 mls from Rawalpindi) with a good friend who had lived in Derby since he was young. We did almost the same route in a Diesel Transit 1971 model and a 1960 Morris FGK (ex British Rail £200 from auction). Our route was a bit different at the beginning we went to France first and at the end of the journey we went Iran - Afghanistan - Pakistan. We stayed there for 4 months and loved every day, and then I said goodbye to Azlam (my friend from Derby) and drove back in our £200 truck that had done 13,000 miles when I got home.
