  • In this episode I try to point out some basic mistakes, and try to help new people from feeling discouraged in the their first few weeks of metal detecting! I've also included some short clips from when we first started to highlight that we all were in that place at first!

Thanks for the video and all your advice , I'm getting a Garrett Detector (as after your great review it looks so easy to use) and I'm looking forward going out and having some fun finding alsorts of things.
Permission to detect is important I know and a few people to ask who own land but I will have a good practice at home first and remember to remove my ring!
I'm really intrested in the local history of where I live and it will be fantastic to have my own collection of coins and belt buckles and thimbles just to think I'm a part of the story, It would be nice to find rare things but I pick up so much litter when dog walking (as I don't like to see where I live looking a mess) that a few hundred bottle caps before my first coin wouldn't matter to much.
Thanks again and look forward to another great video.

OK I CONFESS........ 35 years of detecting, OMG what have I missed? Way back when, I was for coin and ring size targets, Discrimination set up high, dig NO large targets. I'M STILL, being stupid. Yet where I live now is U.S. Civil War area (1860-1865) I could be missing belt buckles, artillery shells, large relic's. Bad habits are hard to break, your video's help in developing good habits for better success. Thanks

45 years ago i got a detector and didnt know a thing. One of the first things i did was take a gold ring and buried and then listened to the tone the detector made when passed over it. Then when i went to tbe beach i heard the same tone and started digging. I dug and dug and dug and finally reached what made the tone....a steel radial tire! Only used the detector a few more times because my husband stopped wanting to go to tbe beach. (Anytime i found fun stuff to do he usually wanted to stop doing it. Odd man. He is my ex husband now)

The regulations are so strict here in Sweden.
You are allowed to OWN a detector, but you need permission from the local authorities to detect. You have to apply for permission and you can only apply for a specified area, and the area can not be near earlier archeological finds (and those places are scattered everywhere!!!!).
And you also have to have a good reason to detect in the area, and the permission of the land owner.
So... you aren't even allowed to detect in your own backyard without permission :-/
I really would like to get a metal detector and detect on my great grandmothers land, but I don't know if it is worth the hassle going through all the bureaucracy...

Dawn, we have all been to this ring rodeo..haha. So true, I've been detecting 24 years and I are this rookie mistake only two years ago with my pin pointer. I'm just glad no one was around to see this fiasco..haha. Another rookie mistake I made was two years ago at a rally in Toronto, Canada. Tim and George from Diggers were there. George was detecting near me and I got a nice signal. He came over and watched me as I retrieved a coin. My mistake was I didn't check my hole before filling it in. I was nervous enough having one of the worlds most popular detectorists watching me. As I went to walk away George swept his detector over my hole and it beeped. I was a little embarrassed when he told me to check it one more time. I opened up the hole again and scanned with the pin pointer and there was another coin...bugger all. He bugged for the rest of the day...haha. Needless to say I have never made that mistake again.

Nice one Dawn, as you say we all have and still do all of these mistakes. I've never detected with steel toecaps but wear a ring on every occasion. Even after many years of detecting we'll still be fooled into digging some iron, coke cans and pull rings. I know i have for years LOL. All the best HH Tony

Great video Dawn! When I started detecting this Spring I had one of these mistake experiences. I found a nice target and pinpointed it. Dug my hole and settled in for the search. My Garrett carrot told me my target was closer so I widened my hole only to get the same results. Once again I dig and get the same thing. Puzzled,I start to wonder if I'm onto some sort of rare and elusive silver worm? The light finally came on and I remembered I have had both knees replaced!

Dawn, at time frame 7:39, that looks like it might be the top of an old straight stick walking cane. If you find out one day I would love to know if I was right. My first summer of detecting and your right, many trips out and not finding anything good yet, but I won't give up!
Something I've been doing, don't know if I'm wasting my time doing it but I'm keeping my finds separated by tags from each location searched along with a rough drawn map showing where on that location each item was found. My thought is, as I learn more, one day a light bulb might go off in my head and it will make more sense to me then it does now. May be these finds are clues as to what else may be there and help guide me to go back to some of these spots and where to continue searching when I do go back, make sense? One thing for sure, it keeps me thinking about these spots I've been to and urges me to continue.
Anyways, thanks for the tips and good hunting! Cheers!

Get yourself a double barreled tumbler and clean your money. Banks look more favorably when the money is cleaned / rolled. I usually run my copper coins for an hour and silver for 2 and they will take them at the bank.

I like in Number 2 how she said be happy with everything you find...Great way to be..so what if you find trash....its still fun to hunt even if its a glue can from 1960s lol

I know a thrift shop that sells donations really cheap by weight. My friends keep purchasing their own keys by mistake. I have a 1966 silver plated 1/2 penny on my key chain.

+Derek Naylor Moo tubes give of the best signals EVER! You just cant NOT dig them, Twiggy dug 26 once in a day he was nearly needing a moo tube fix himself he was so frustrated haha

    • @DerekNaylor
      @DerekNaylor Před 9 lety +1

+detecting nottingham Hiya, yes i said in last beginners video to join clubs so people could help etc, weve learnt so much from other people, we were out alone at first but I highly recommend joining a club too, for the best of both worlds :-)
