She doesn't have an awful voice. She only has a soft voice and doesn't have the vibrato, so her voice fits better in pop and acoustic melodies, not so much in broadway style (I said "not so much" and not "not at all" cuz, have you heard her song for the movie? Beautiful Ghosts is a beautiful song and it has kind of a Broadway feel to it, even though it was written by her)

Jason Derulo went to AMDA which is one of the top 5 performance arts school in the US. I’m not surprised he can sing.
I thought it was mentioned once during James Corden's Carpool Karaoke that he either trained as a classical singer or studied opera while at AMDA. If you've never seen the clip CZcams, Jason belts out this opera piece and has some serious pipes.
That is, at least, half of US pop singers, like Taylor for example.
