  • The day the Yamaha Warrior 350 left the Banshees behind. That day it was all about traction and the 22" Spider Tracs were hard to beat in the melting snow and mushy muddy layer over the rocks.

    Simple torque band comparison. I banshee needs the revs for it to bite on soft deep pack trails. The warrior do to being a 4 stroke has lots of low end torque so it has a better chance of digging through soft worn trails

    • @trailblogger
      @trailblogger  Před 6 lety +1

      it was really all about traction. I have seen both of these guys ride right up stuff I would not even attempt on my craziest days. I cheated and was there the day before, I laced up my half paddles (spider tracs) and was the only one that day that had a half decent tire. I almost thought the polaris guys were going to make it at first but they were just too heavy and then the one guy threw a tire off the bead and they were done.

    cool video, ive heard good things about spider traks, but ive found 6-ply tires to be too stiff in the snow. 22'' ChengShin 2-ply knobbies were an excellent snow & sand tire on my 400 EX. they punctured easily, but if u carried a plug kit, they were a kickass tire to run in the winter. maybe ill try spider-traks next time? awesome trails you guys got!

    • @trailblogger
      @trailblogger  Před 8 lety

      I can't find those spider tracs anymore. Closest I have found was the Kenda Bear Claws. If you do find a place who actually sells Spider Tracs then please give me a heads up. The rears are 22" x 12 - 9s I can't run 2 ply tires here because there are a lot of areas where we have to cover rocks and sticks just to get the to snow. The snow is usually at the top of the mountain or on the backside in the passes. I do try and carry a plug kit but forget a lot. thanks for watching!

      Check out the ITP Holeshot HD (if they still make them...I've been out of the ATV scene for a few years). I had those tires on my modded Raptor 700R-SE and they were fricken amazing! I rode the Hatfield/McCoy trails with a group of 4x4's (I was the only sport quad) and kept right up with them without trouble. I chose the HD's because they were 6-ply, as I rode in the woods a lot (rocks, tree stumps, and sticks)

    • @trailblogger
      @trailblogger  Před 8 lety

      Kyle M I have the ITP Holeshot HD on my 450 and they have lasted a long time but they don't seem to grip as good as the ITP Holeshot GNCC tires I have on the Banshee. The Bear Claws are a totally different type of tire though, more of a mud and snow. The Holeshots do handle a lot better on the rocks.

You would destroy a set of paddles before you even reached the hill. If you look you can see I am running Spider Tracs, which are a kind of a half paddle 6 ply tire specifically for mud and snow. its a good trail machine, not going to win any drag races on it but they are a good solid reliable trail machine that will climb just about anything you are brave enough to try and will run almost all day long on a single tank of gas. The 88s and 89s were great because they have a pull rope start for backup just in case the battery goes dead or something shorts out. Nice to have both electrical and pull rope start when you are going way out in the woods. They are also pretty small and light so easy to roll start or drag back on the trail if you do wreck it.

      I had a handful of dirt bikes before this, dozen or so. We would ride up into the deep snow every year, but all the good spots would be 3 to 4 feet deep above the waist, and the bikes would ultimately just sink. The sport quads are light enough to kind of skim the surface if the conditions are just right and not too soupy. This day, they were pretty soupy, but with the 22" spider trac tires, I was able to squeeze by this sloppy steep section. It is dangerous, though, as you can get yourself in trouble if you lose momentum and sink in a deep spot.

    So why a sport ATV over a 4X4? I mean you have that clutch system which I don't really see a point to (unless that shifts faster then a regular foot shift). You have to worry about the exposed chain and sprockets, and you only have 2WD. Plus it seems like these bikes are easy to stall.
    From what I see I'd rather a Foretrax/Foreman or Kodiak/Grizzly any day of the week.
    Really does these quads have any use at all outside competitive racing?

    • @trailblogger
      @trailblogger  Před 8 lety

      because 90% of the time we arent in snow and the extra 4x4 drivelines and gearing are just dead weight slowing you down. if you watch most of my videos they are on dirt and rocks or sand. occasionally in the winter we have to cross snowy peaks but rarely are all of the trails covered in deep snow unless you head out of town to the higher elevations. the chain allows for more play in the suspension without having to have a heavy driveline system with a U joint that can go out on you. also its a hell of a lot quicker and easier to throw a new chain on (one clip) than bolt a new driveline in. all that being said I do want a Yamaha Grizzly 700 4x4 to add to my fleet, they are fun too just prefer my sport quads is all.

    • @trailblogger
      @trailblogger  Před 8 lety

      The clutch is for power launching and for shifting under power without having to let off the gas. If you have ever driven a car with a stick shift and revved the motor then dropped the clutch and done a burn out you could see how this would apply to power launching on a hill or off the line during a race.

      That's cool. I don't care for racing myself and there isn't many areas around me where you can really get to speed anyway, unless you risk racing down the road. A lot of trails up here are forest type trails, mashes and at winter a lot of snow.
      Coming to shaft bikes I rarely see anything go wrong with those drivelines. I guess if your really, really beating the shit of the bike then yea, but in general your more likely to have the engine go before the drive system.
      I guess different bikes suits different needs. If your goal is going fast I understand having a race bike. But I meant more just in general, for a all needs machine a Grizzly type machine seems to be the way to go.
      fyi: This was the first video I've sen from you as well.

    • @trailblogger
      @trailblogger  Před 8 lety

      +Justin Lynch (crazyman832) I grew up riding ranch style 4x4 quads. my dad had a big bear 350 i used to crash around on. in general the suspensions are stiffer and the quads are heavier. the big benefit I see in them is the 4x4 for snow and also the rack for carrying more gear or supplies. a spot quad is a lot lighter and more fun to ride in my opinion, even if it is not a very fast model like the warrior 350. it's a lot easier to drag a warrior out of a ditch or flip it back over after a wreck than a 4x4 type quad. oh and if you notice the 2 Polaris 4x4s in this video did not make it up while my little 2wd warrior did :-)
