    I own this watch. It's really one of those watches you can't fully appreciate until seeing it and actually wearing it out. The engineering of the details and fitment of this watch are amazing. The bracelet is more comfortable than any of my Rolex and the fact that a 40mm integrated sports watch wears small for its size is a revelation for my small wrist. The aqua dial is a highlight. It's a mix of blue and green but I'd definitely define it as a green dial.
    The best part of the watch, as you said, is the design. It's brilliant in my opinion - a blend of the Royal Oak and Nautilus.

      100% true...when I was wearing the aqua Ingenieur at the IWC Boutique I was amazed about the look & feel of the watch. Loved it....but it would be awesome if the bracelet of the aqua could be bought without the polished inserts (like the brushed bracelet of the black dial).

    I tried this watch on a couple weeks ago. Its maybe 2k too much at best. Yes same movement as Mark 20, BUT finishing on ingeniur is done to a very very different level, that's what is most time consuming in watch manufacturing, and time is money. The bracelet is better than omega, chopard and better than jlc bracelets. CZcams comments are filled with Walmart people, people who have never seen the watch, people that have no idea what fine details and finishing is and how difficult it is. In person the watch changed my mind on a few issues I had with it, and considering iwc had over 1 billion in sales last year, they are selling just fine

  • @eman331
    @eman331 Před 4 měsíci +57

    The retail price is $11,700. With that budget, and if you are willing to wait, you can purchase a Date Submariner or a GMT Master II. Also, you can purchase an Evolution 9 Grand Seiko. Personally, if I had that budget, I would rather purchase a Zenith Chronomaster Sport. You can also purchase an Omega NTTD Seamaster, but I also think that watch is overpriced. I am not going to say this IWC watch is overpriced, but if I had $11,700 to spend, would I buy it? Hell No.

    • @bdegrds
      @bdegrds Před 4 měsíci +5

      Your not going to be able to get any of those Rolex's. The GS has an inferior bracelet compared to the ingeniur and the Zenith is inferior in finishing as well. Omega is a notch or 2 below IWC. You would know all these things if you were actually involved in the watch world and not just look at CZcams videos

    • @MeestroDavid
      @MeestroDavid Před 4 měsíci +3

      Yeah, but the IWC’s movement is notably inferior to every watch mentioned and isn’t even an in-house caliber. It uses a buggy ValFluerier movement with no stated accuracy ratings, even though that exact movement is COSC in Baume & Mercier watches costing less than half this price. So, y’know, we all have our priorities, preferences, and justifications for the arbitrary pricing of luxury goods. For me personally, there’s nothing about this new Ingeneiur that makes worth any more than the version from 2014 that had better dimensions, a more reliable movement, was more faithful to the Genta original, and cost less than half of what they’re asking now…

      You can find them for 9.2k full set on Chrono24. Prices are going down. A little less than 9k would make it a great buy, IMO. I bet most saying just get a Mark XX is not actually getting a Mark XX. I have a GMT Master II and Sub...would still consider this watch as it's a totally different style with a different mission for me. But to your point, MSRP, would not be my first priority.

    Always nice to see someone go out on a limb .... however, nothing I've seen about the watch screams that it's worth over $10k. The design isn't that stunning. The movement isn't that great. At a time when 90% of inflation is caused by greedflation - IWC went the wrong way on this one. If they'd priced it in the $6-7k range this would have been a homerun and a gateway drug to get folks to the IWC brand. Full disclosure -- I own two IWC watches. I'm a big fan of the brand. This pricing made me like them less. As far as the Genta design? anyone can homage that for inspiration.

    I'm still undecided if it's worth it, but I've tried all the steel ones on and they're brilliant. The Aqua is my favorite. I'm normally not a polished center links guy, but it just works so well here. It doesn't feel too blingy. The comfort/size on my wrist is just perfect too. If you look at them on Chrono24, it seems the Aqua is either JUST below sticker new, or well OVER. Maybe the market is speaking on the pricing and saying it's worth it. I've not tried the titanium model, unfortunately. I hope they release others in the titanium line at some point though.

  • @robmchoya
    @robmchoya Před 4 měsíci +6

    Harrison, I really appreciate your reviews and generally gel with you on most of your assessments. However, I have to tell you that I'm not tracking with your justification for the price here. The Genta design is not even one of his most iconic. And while this dial is amazingly detailed and a beautiful color, it's not 10,500£beautiful. Stainless steel with a fairly routine movement (which, as you point out, you don't even see) - I just can't get behind IWC's pricing strategy here.

  • @ozmondos
    @ozmondos Před 4 měsíci +10

    The movement in ingenieur can be found in another much cheaper watch from Baume Mercier. When people pointed this out, instead of upgrading the movement of this watch apparently they are going to downgrade the movement in the Baume Mercier. Dodgy strategies like this are also taken by Panerai, Cartier and probably many more.

    • @bdegrds
      @bdegrds Před 4 měsíci

      The movement is not the same, internet misinformation. Components are received by each manufacturer, then each manufacturer assembles, finishes and regulates the movements. BM is absolutely no where close to Iwc in this. They are not drop in movements like kids on the internet think. This practice is very very common in the industry.

    • @ozmondos
      @ozmondos Před 4 měsíci +4

      @@bdegrds They're powered by the same movement, but the Ingenieur costs more than 3 times of the BM Baumatic. At least the Baumatic is COSC while the Ingenieur is not. A lot of people call the Ingenieur the weakest of Genta's integrated watch designs when compared to the Nautilus and RO. For me though, this incarnation of it is amazing. I like that you can get a thoroughly contemporary, well-specced, Genta-designed integrated sports watch that doesn't come with the price tag or social baggage of a RO or an unobtainable Nautilus. There were some stinkers in the line's history for sure, however, they've nailed all the details in this one. It's number one on my list since trying it on. Love it.

  • @Kbo513
    @Kbo513 Před 4 měsíci +1

    It’s an actual Gerald Genta designed watch, not a Genta inspired designed watch, where you don’t have play AD games, have a spend history to get one, then beg to be allocated one - seems like added value to me.
    I waited last year for it for just one month and now they are cheaper in the grey market. And now they are just add to cart in their website. I purchased it since I liked it and I don’t intend to sell it.
    Also Harrison mentioned it too, the only integrated watch competitor that fits better than an Ingenieur are Parmigiani Fleurier models. I tried on the VC Overseas multiple times- such a weird fit to me. AP was dainty and Nautilus was the ok of the three in terms of fit for me.
    You’re getting a Genta watch that is cheaper than Chopard and GP. The movement could be of debate, but other brands share movements as well.

    Great review, and I love the scenery! I love this watch, the dial, color and structure, is fantastic. I agree with the butterfly clasp, not convenient. Over-priced? All Swiss watches are over-priced, mechanical watches are so much about perception. Objectively, it's a very high quality watch, 120 hours of power reserve, beautiful stainless steel, solid movement. I never really understood why so many people find it expensive. Compared to what? I love the Rolex Submariner too, but this watch is arguably of a finer quality. A close comparison IMHO is the GP Laureato. And that one is something like 3K more expensive than the Ingenieur, and nobody says the Laureato is too expensive. In fact the opposite, you often hear it is cheap vs the AP Royal Oak. Again, it's all perception.

    Beautiful watch worth the money. I may get heavily criticized for saying this, but what do you think about the price of a Royal Oak or Nautilus we have seen a billion times? PRX’s or Christopher Ward do not come close in terms of fit and finish and IWC pilot watches with the same movement retail for at least $5.000 to $6.000. So would the « right price » be $7.000, 8.000 or 9.000 ? Maybe, but this is not enough to consider it « grossly » overpriced.

    I think this is a beautiful watch, but imo, it's the least compelling of Genta's integrated bracelet steel sports watch designs. The Royal Oak and Nautilus are so distinctive in their design language and have the weight of being from 2 of the Holy Trinity watch brands. I don't think I could justify shelling out nearly $12k for one despite it being a relative "bargain" compared to it's AP and Patek siblings. It's in a weird place where it's too expensive to compete with the copy-cat designs, but not "special" enough to compete with the more famous Genta designs.

    Just because you say it’s overpriced doesn’t mean the other features aren’t 100% true. It’s just priced when the market was up. Drop this a few grand and there’ll be lines at all boutiques.

    Sorry, the price justification makes no sense. Gerald Genta didn’t design this watch. He designed a watch for IWC in 1976 that IWC’s current design team drew inspiration from and evolved. Which is exactly what IWC’s design team has done many times with the Ingenieur…this is just the first time they’ve had the gall to charge for the association. This would be no different than VW suddenly slapping an extra 10 grand on the price of every new Golf because they decided to evoke Giugiaro (a far more important designer than Genta in every measure) as the designer of the original model in 1974. Or, more directly, if Seiko added a few grand to the price of every Giugiaro-designed watch they reissue. But they don’t. Because that would be stupid. I do appreciate your Gucci reference, though, because it really lays it out plain: You’re not paying for the watch, you’re certainly not paying for the Richemont-sourced movement, and you’re certainly not paying for an original Genta design…you’re paying for the IWC logo on the dial…and to the extent someone puts any value on that logo is really the answer to “is this overpriced?”

  • @KojakKronos

    Really, it's not overpriced because of the who designed the original?!?!? So by that same logic Omega should charge a lot more for the Genta designed Constellation? The value proposition of a watch design is based on its constituent parts, level of finishing and supply & demand. The movement is the same as the B&M Riviera that has a saphire dial and open caseback for £3,600. I challenge you to point out what aspects of the Ingenieur justify a £7k uplift for a watch that offers no micro-adjustments on butterfly clasp, no quick change bracelet and a closed caseback! Leaving us with supply & demand, sure IWC don't make that many watches to begin with, but is that because they aren't as popular as other mid-tier luxury brands? The pricing has more to do with Richemont's pricing strategy amongst it's different brands rather than the real value of the watch, especially after they jacked up JLC prices by 45% in one fell swoop a year ago. But that's a topic for another discussion!

    Well, I know I’ll get a lot of flak for this, yet I own an extremely beautiful watch, build quality is way above average, finishing is impeccable, it is one of my most comfortable pieces to wear, case and strap conforms perfectly on my wrist, it has an amazing dial with patterns and colour that changes with every movement-
    and it looks exactly the same is this IWC-
    Only it is an Ix&Dao Engineer, with a PT5000 movement and it cost me 290 dollars. 🤷🏼‍♂️.
    One of my favourites in the collection, by far.
    It is a scratch magnet, because it is polished so well, so I already used a Cape Cod cloth on it once.

    Sorry but it is overpriced. Like every Luxury company they are chasing Rolex hoping they can stick. I will always endorse buying used prices drop like stone on many models especially the 3 year old in mint. Also you can buy a Girard Perregaux Laureato.

  • @POSUEN

    The comparison between an artist’s work and watches is a bit of a leap. Art pieces are made directly by the hand of the artist and can no longer be produced after his/her death. Often art pieces are unique and one of a kind. These watches, either by IWC, PP, and AP are mass produced and have never been directly made by the hand of Genta. They will be made in perpetuity and have no correlation to the life of the original designer. So to say that the high price of the new ingénieur is justified because Genta is no longer alive is preposterous.

    • @juliuscaesar5360
      @juliuscaesar5360 Před 4 měsíci

      It’s a ValFleurier movement which is a movement manufacturer in the Richemont organization. So conventionally it would be considered an “in-house” movement but I feel that phrase gets thrown around too much. They aren’t making the movements at the watchmaking facility like Nomos, Glashutte Original, JLC, etc which I would consider in house manufacturing. Also, Baume et Mericer uses the same movement in couple of their models and the watches are priced around the $4k range.

    To start with, your explanation of “is it overpriced” is absolutely awful, (sorry) yes the watch is worth more money than the baume&mercier Riviera ( it’s the same movement and spec) because the bracelet and the clasp is fantastic, so ok let’s be fair, very very fair, that takes it to being worth 5,500 -£6,000 tops. it’s horrendously overpriced. when it came to answering the hard-hitting question “ Gérald Genta they can charge whatever they want”
    IWC sales are down but for now profit is the same. it is an absolutely fantastic watch but it’s overpriced, wildly overpriced and the market for that watch is a very niche market.
