- "The Little Drummer Boy," also known as "Carol of the Drum," is a popular Christmas song written by pianist Katherine K. Davis in 1941, It was popularised by the version of the Harry Simeone Chorale and has been adapted many times since.
The lyrics tell of a poor young boy who, unable to afford a gift for the infant Jesus, plays his drum for the newborn with the Virgin Mary's approval. The newborn seems to understand and smiles at the boy in gratitude.
In 1978 I had the honor and privilege of meeting these children when they were touring US. I was working as desk clerk at Quality Inn Norwood., Ohio I had the honor of checking them into their rooms 🧒 nice group of kids 👨👨👧
Who else gets emotional at the line "Then He smiled at me, a rump-a-bum-bum-bum, me and my drum"? What a sweet image.
I cry every time I hear this and I'm 56 years old! The perfect Christmas song in my opinion ❤

I remember Christmas 1958, I was seven. This song was catching everyone’s attention. On Christmas Eve my dad was driving us to my family gathering and we stopped at a record store where he bought the record! Such sweet memories!

@Greg L True! Have you noticed that in many of the "updated" versions of the song, the, ummm, "offensive" parts are censored? For example, "Baby Jesu," has become "little baby," and "Mary nodded" has become "then she nodded." Absolute insanity.
I was searching for the animated Little Drummer Boy and I found it. Now I have it set to record on Saturday. "MY BEAR " loved this song and the movie.

This song was the ONLY ONE to make my dad cry...full, honest, heart-felt, emotional tears. Watching the strongest, wisest, patient, n toughest man cry like a baby. Taught me what he could, learned all he taught. He's long since died and to this day, makes me break down. Thank you!!!

I remember when the song first came out, I think it was in the 50s or early 60s, and it was on a two-record set by the Harry Simeone Chorale. I just thought it was the most beautiful song for Christmas, and I knew every single song on both of those records by heart and still do!

I'll never forget seeing them on my vacation to Vienna Austria when I was 17 years old, many, many, many years ago. such a beautiful country.♥♥.
Probably my favorite thing about this song is its moral: The most important thing you can give to someone is to give them yourself. That's what God did on Christmas, and it's what He wants us to do as well (by living for Him and doing His will). In this case, the drummer boy gave himself by doing what he does best.

Always reminds me of my mom... This song had a special tie between her and I. She has been gone for 22 years now. Never got to know her as an adult unfortunately. And Christmas is always the most difficult time....
I love this group. Love this song and the way they sing it. These boys have to be the most wholesome group of kids on the planet. When I was working as a desk clerk in 1978 Quality Inn in Norwood, Ohio: I got a chance to meet them and check them into their rooms. The nicest group of kids you would ever want to meet. Not like the juvie thugs that abound in our society today.

the white building you see at the end in the background is where they live and study, the PALAIS AUGARTEN in the second district of vienna , AU being a meadow usually close to water and a GARTEN is of course a garde. the palais is situated close to the danube and the grounds in early times used to be meadows close to the river before it was regulated and controlled.
there is a reason they are world famous... they have several groups and some are touring the world at any given time.....
They really are sweet kids with the voices of angels.
