In this video I share with you how we are managing our cattle during the Texas drought 2022. I explain sources that will help you through education such as Holistic Management International, Savory Institute, Herd Quitter podcast, along with some media recommendations.
Low input beef and dairy genetics have made a great difference in helping us deal with summer 2022 drought.
I give examples of how we are managing our forages, soil, and cattle grazing. This year we are doing so much better than in the 2011 drought.
I hope this video will help you in some way. Even baby steps are better than none at all.
    Blessings,
    Caren

Good morning, lovely lady! Thank you for another useful video! I really appreciate your passing along all of the new and old tips that you have acquired through the years! Very helpful! 😊 I love how you never stop learning to improve your homestead.
Would you consider doing a video on training calves to take a halter? I have NEVER done it before. How old is too old to train? I have a 14 month heifer and 1 month old bull. The heifer has ALWAYS been standoffish, whereas, the bull is super friendly. Also, what size/type/brand halter do you prefer?
Actually, even passing along the steps (training, food, supplements, weaning, etc.) y'all have found to be most effective in RAISING calves would be really beneficial! So many of us have not been raised on a farm but are eager to acquire lots of helpful information that we can implement.
I am so glad that I live near Gilmer in East Texas! The drought has been difficult but I did not experience near the harshness that y'all did! My area is an excellent place for me, a newbie, to learn. I REALLY admire how WELL y'all are managing in your harsher environment...It takes REAL skill/savvy to thrive where you are! 🤩
What you said about rotational grazing and "easy keeper" cows is SUCH good advice! Right now, I have only dairy cows...1 sweet Jersey and 4 Guernseys. They are easy keepers, especially the Jersey! I don't give her anything...She just gets grass, minerals/salt. She always looks in excellent condition...Almost fat!
Thanks, again! I am so glad that you are putting out videos again! God bless!

Goodness, thank you so much for your kinds words. They sure are encouraging. It is always good to hear from fellow Texans. We definitely will do a video on training calves. At the moment we have three heifers that we are working with. I think it is possible to train a 14 month old, of course your approach will be different than it would be with young calves.
Right now we are are using a breaking halter, I think the brand is Weaver and a leather show halter. We also use turn out halters, I think ours are from Nasco.
With your 14 month old I would suggest starting with putting her in a chute and putting on a turn out halter with a lead rope while she is in a head gate. This is safest for both of you. It is much easier to work on approaching her if she already has on a halter. With an older calf we will let them drag around the lead rope for a bit in the pen to learn pressure and release. We don't leave them unattended. After they adjust to this we teach them to stand tied to a fence, we brush and pet them. After all is calm we change to the breaking halter and work with them in the pen twice daily until they learn. Once they learn they seem to always remember no matter how long the time span in between leading.
When we make a video we will address your questions. Please feel free ask us any questions that you might have.
      Blessings and thank you!
