- Obviously, comedy is all derivative from some point in the past, but I believe the recent surge in Post-Ironic Meta-Humor is due to the influence of Tim Heidecker. Don't believe me? Well, that sucks, because I just asked my mom and she said I'm right, sorry!

Man it's weird for someone to frame Tim Heidecker as someone you "might not know". I'm having a very hard time coping with being old. 😔
I'm terrible sorry! One day I'll probably have the same feeling with John Mulaney or Bo Burnham or something!
Lmao same tho
yeah, I have a hard time coping with you being old too :(
@@cameronvanhook7388 it sucks, right!?
I'm a tad bit younger than Tim, the fact he's being revered as the father of a style of comedy indeed makes me feel fcking ancient lol
Tim and Eric along with the rest of the Adult Swim lineup shaped my taste in comedy to what it is today.
100% agree. Ebaumsworld too
isn't adult swim outstanding ? it's awesome.
same here and i dont know if thats a good thing lol
@@orugnet hey O, glad you replied. Im very ill but AS still tickles my sense of humor. A sense of humor is vitally important in this shitty post trump world. Much love from western ny usa.

I’m still on the jury for the Tim Hydecker trial, 6 yrs and counting

I also believe that a really big component of Heideckers comedy is his editing (Dougs) and mise-en-scene and cinematography. His productions consistently nail the feeling of each skit he tries to convey, like a rad tv show from late 90s mtv, or a Carl Sagan like documentary, or myriad of infomertials, and the list goes on. The fact that his productions nail those various formats so good elevates his jokes exponentially, in my opinion.
exponential myriad of mise-en-scene
8 minutes into this and no mention of Douggpound. He’s as much t&e as tim is and arguably more responsible for what’s currently funny in the realm of tv and video. See Eric Andre and half of what’s popular on yt
Came here to praise Doug too. He’s the best.
Yeah, his comedy has always been about A) amazing editing B) good line delivery
Came here to say this.
Tim and Eric is the only true way to find out if they're a keeper

The 1st time i was introduced to Tim and Eric i was on mushrooms. We had just taken them and only watched 2 episodes becase i was having trouble breathing and to this day i have never laughed so hard in my life.
I can’t even imagine that! Their content already makes you feel high!

I think Tim Heidecker can be very funny, but the overwhelming majority of people influenced by the Tim & Eric style are embarrassingly unfunny. The major difference being that Tim's humor most often has many layers and intentions behind it, and the imitators generally just do surface-level "random/awkward" nonsense because they can't actually think of anything funny to do, say or write.
Yeah I bet there’s a lot of truth to that
Exactly. I see people dismiss Tim and Eric as just being random humor, but it's incredibly hard to replicate that style.
Didn’t they have an episode spoofing these types? The “g4” network guys with goatees?

yep except I haven’t really binged it per se. but once it clicked for me I definitely was more prone to laugh because I understood the goal of the way they were doing it a little bit better and I watched it slightly more often than before.
Same. I loved watching AS when I was young but hated T & E. I always turned the channel when it came on. But I gave it another chance a few years ago and my opinion completely changed. I don’t think my mind was jaded and cynical enough to appreciate the genius of T & E when I was kid.

We GenXers are represented by Timothy Richard Heidecker, who is One Of Us.
As soon as I saw a single "Casey and his brother / Uncle Muscle's Hour" sketch back in 07, there was no going back.
As much as I love Tim and Eric, Bob Odenkirk is really the Father of Modern comedy. If you go back and look at Mr. Show, quite literally EVERYTHING that Mr. Show did that was absolutely outrageous for the time has now come true.
facts
That one sketch where David is Tatiana, the weather hermaphrodite. Or Bob is Terry Twillsdine, (British accent) "I videotape coppers arresting roustabouts!" God that show is incredible.
the Tom Green Show came before Mr. Show.
@@tappajavittu Yes it aired one year earlier, but Mr show was straight sketch comedy whereas the Tom Green show was a talk show hybrid.
Bob is also friends with Tim and Eric, and has been for years. David Cross too. They are in the Tim and Eric productions often, because of this.
I had this feeling that that Tim and Eric skit about the universe might've been about failing to find the right words in order to explain a drug induced epiphany on how the universe works but they're sober now and it all makes no sense.
That... that is very possible and I hope accurate

"Meta humor, i hate meta" -Norm MacDonald
So meta that he wasn't meta because he was meta.
Norm’s moth joke is probably the funniest thing I’ve ever heard. Just putting together a sappy Chekhov story with a stupid punchline won me over.
Tim's brand of comedy is extremely unique and legendary. A lot of people say comedy has become stagnant with the same formula being used by most comics. But Tim has already shown us the way forward. You gotta get weird and ironic with it
It's weird watching this stuff get analyzed in-depth. I've always used Tim & Eric's comedy as a measuring stick for new people that come into my life. You either love it, hate it, or simply don't understand it. I can still be friends with people that don't like it, but I usually don't have anything in common with people who don't understand it, and it's pretty rare if I end up good friends with that person. Call me judgmental or whatever, but that's the way it is.
That’s a fact.
Judgmental Babb
I think my best friendships are with people that I’ve slowly gotten into Tim and Eric’s stuff. I think most people have capacity to “get it,” but it just takes a few reps for it to click. The litmus test should be “are they open minded enough for you to show them more.” Agreed on people who flat out reject it, usually not much in common with those people…
This is so unironically true it's not even funny.
I suspect that the people who “don’t understand it” actually come to the table acting superior. You can say “this is surface layer dumb jokes but there’s a lot of satire going on. Give it like ten seconds before you draw judgement”. Then they’ll give you two seconds and start talking about how unphased they are by whatever goofy surface-level shit they saw in those two seconds
Tim’s “7th annual on cinema at the cinema Oscar special” might be one of the funniest things I’ve very seen I encourage everyone to watch.
THE JOKER STRIKES AGAIN!
I'm a 5th Annual On Cinema at the Cinema Oscar Special kinda gal myself.
On Cinema At The Cinema is the most brilliant comedic project maybe of all time...but it feels kind of impossible to introduce anyone to it at this point. Hard to tell any of my other friends in their mid 30s to watch like 13 years of various content spread all over different mediums
@@andrewd3707 then your friends suck. i guess, mine do too. one referredto monty python as, "those foreign films you're always watching," oi!
Huge fan of Tim Heidecker since Tom Goes to the Mayor - it’s both funny and strange to see the Tim and Eric style of editing and humor in such a wide spectrum of the media . I saw an insurance commercial just the other day that was obviously a nod to Awesome Show, Great Job! …weird. You def nailed it with this video , Great Job!
In regards to Tim's ventures into post-irony, it's also worth mentioning a lesser-known film he starred in and helped produce, directed by Rick Alverson called "The Comedy". It's a fantastic, yet painful, cautionary tale about the dangers of "overindulging" in a post-ironic lifestyle.
In his work, Heidecker uses his post-ironic humour carefully and professionally. He knows what he's doing. Post-irony really is a "don't try this at home" approach to comedy, and while it may seem like goofy fun to deliberately blur the line between funny and not funny, if you go too deep you may lose that line and end up not valuing anything. The film is absolutely brilliant and does a much better job at explaining this idea than I have here. Also, despite the title, it is very much NOT a comedic film.
I think it's also important to mention that for years Tim and Eric seemingly had no footage of them behind the scenes where they weren't in character. Every interview was either clearly an insane bit from them or just when it starts getting 'serious' they would say something stupid to show that they're still just fucking with everyone.
For years even huge fans of their work didn't have a good idea of what these guys were actually like in real life which sort of helped hold the glue of all their works together and make even the most mundane, seemingly 'real' videos of them seem hilarious. Tim only started presenting as the real Tim Heidecker around 5 years ago and Eric has only recently appeared as the real Eric Wareheim a few times on Tim's podcast.
@@cake1661 I seriously think Sam Hyde using post-irony as a cover for his white nationalist bullshit was Tim’s breaking point. Since then he’s made a very clear delineation between him and “Tim Heidecker”
@@Garbageman28 Yeah I think in recent years a lot of shitty people including Hyde have used these sort of 'silly half-real ironic personalities' to push some terrible beliefs. Which has sort of ruined that method of comedy a bit.
@@cake1661 There's footage of them not in character trying to come up with bits at like 2 or 3 in the morning on one of the Tim and Eric season DVDs. Probably season 1. So I'm not sure that it was entirely hidden what they were like
@@Garbageman28 seems like a major over simplification and flat out misinformed interpretation
Tim is also a phenomenal comedic actor. This is often overlooked. Another important factor is Doug’s editing skills. Tim (Tim & Eric) is just a perfect storm of talent.
Hey good video. I think sometimes the humour you attribute to Gen Z is actually pretty quintessential millennial as well - but regardless still cool to see some conversation around Tim and Eric. They pretty much were the zeitgeist for at least 5 years there
Yeah very strange to call it gen z humor
Yeah I'd say this is firmly millennial humor
“Fathered“ by a Gen X-er.
Hiedecker is Gen X so I'm not sure how this millennial or Gen Z.
I've been thinking this the last few years when I see gen Zers railing on unfunny millennial humor. How different is it really?
Tim Heidecker, Eric Andre, Tim Robinson are all my brand of comedy. I remember watching Tim & Eric for the first time in 2007 and I started laughing until I couldn’t breathe and didn’t even know why. Some people laugh uncontrollably when their dog chases it’s tail. I need a little more absurdity.

Ahhhh me too!
On Cinema got me through the hardest times in my life. One of the most funny shows ever and definitely not for everyone. The character development and even the Oscar Specials are some of the most genius things any comedian/person has done for entertainment.
Still can't see Tim the same way I did after I found out that he pulled strings to get MDE's World Peace off the air. They did Tim&Eric better and he eliminated the competition in such a scummy way.
The analysis of why Tim and Eric is funny is not very good in this video. He seems to think that self deprivation and saying dumb things is what makes Tim and Eric different. Truth is 90% of all of tim and Eric is just parody. They're not saying "haha what if we made a sketch about dumb scientists who don't understand anything and keep talking out of their butts" in reality they are saying "let's satirize the intellectual community and they're "ism's" by doing a video that is constructed similarly, but the content is nonsense" they do this with "the universe" satirizing scientism and that religion, they satirize doctor patient relationship, award shows, TV ads, and tons of other things. What's very funny now is that after all those years of counter cultural content they made, they themselves as individuals have become narrative oriented and distorted by politics, of course they hate trump. It's just sad to see something like that get ruined. MDE was the next great hope, season one was seriously prophetic, but also insanely funny.
His Coke and Pepsi routine is the best
I've always enjoyed ridiculous humor ("Stella" is my all-time favorite), so Tim and Eric have a special place in my heart, especially when they team up with Zach G. The endless terrible evolution of Tim's "On Cinema" character is a real treat to behold!
Funk rock.

Tim and Eric blew my mind when I was in high school. It was the kind of comedy I knew existed but didn’t know I needed in my life.
Good humour is universal. I'm 45 and I've been cracking up at Tim and Eric for years.
Right? I'm 33 and my mom is 57. We're both huge fans who have been to their live show multiple times. If anything, she's an even bigger fan than I am.

Same, I’m also 45 and love Tim Heidecker. It makes sense really, since he’s the same age as us.
It sometimes takes several years for people to learn that there is nothing new under the sun. Tim and Eric are absolute masters of their art, but we are all standing on someone's shoulders

@@MisterSweetProductions idk, i'm stuck in classic yt too, along with classic cable, so i'm thinking after hours, you know, the diner
The On Cinema Oscar specials are some of the funniest things you can find on the internet. That show does a genius job at editing. You get the sense that the in-character editors of this show absolutely hate Tim Heidecker, and the out-of-character editors are trying as hard as they fucking can to make Tim break.
"I don't want anymore minions on my show!" *editors proceed to put every minions screenshot ever on the tv*
Great video. I’m glad Tim and Eric’s show gets the recognition it deserves with how it influenced and even shaped newer and more experimental types of comedy by not just including one off jokes of this type but by making it the standard for the entire show. Eric’s role shouldn’t go understated though; if it wasn’t for him, many of my favorite skits would not be nearly as good.
For me the next natural transition from this type of humor was easily the Eric Andre show which in itself takes the concept even further and to new absurdist and nihilistic levels I hadn’t seen before. I mean hell; where Tim’s show deconstructs sketch comedy and more, Eric Andre continues that but brings in subversions of the late night show format which I absolutely love. Speaking of deconstructing, it’s no coincidence the set gets completely obliterated each season for instance. Bird up.
Oh absolutely! Eric Andre is amazing and a terrible personal to poorly imitate! It gets very awkward… speaking from experience here

When you got comedy like Tim Heidecker in them, you can't lose.
The last part of the video discussing standup allowed me to finally figure out why I find the people who got their sense of humor from standup not that funny. It's like their whole idea of irony is contained in either being mean or just saying things with different intonation.
Much of standup is just laughing in an audience at something, doesn't matter what it is or if it is actually funny, it's just laughing as part of a group to feel you belong, many of these shows even have plants who laugh and clap on que to prompt audience to respond. Not entirely different to laughing along to a laugh track, you remove the laughing and you see how unfunny those shows can be.
Man you should be friggin stoked with that joker voice. That was deluxe

Could you imagine a world where Tim, Eric, and Andy Kaufman were all alive and doing comedy together?
Did you get permssion from the HEI Network to use these clips? I expect you'll be hearing from Mr. Heideckers Lawyer, Tim Heidecker, very soon!
It realized how groundbreaking this was when it came out. It was like the punk rock of comedy. It got rid all the production and polish and was unfiltered madness.
Was watching an Elder Millenial play Elden Ring, while she talked about being an Elder Millenial... and I called her "the elden millenial" and I think it was the best joke I've made in my entire 28 years of life.
Extremely well done, from a long time fan. It’s crazy how much stuff Tim has put out that I genuinely enjoy and love and don’t just give a pass because I like the guy. Like, everything he’s made the last 15 years or so is some of my favorite all time media, let alone comedy.
I love your style and I would love to see your take on Dougpound and his influence. His editing was such an insane part of that show and making something out of nothing, he deserves so much credit. Not to leave Eric out obviously he is the whole aesthetic and look and design of it all. Tim and Eric is basically half of Adult Swim
Another similar person (but with far less notoriety) that this reminds me of is Nathan Barnatt. He's a man who has been in equally as many memes but is way less known. (Do a video on Nathan)
I’m so glad I live in a lifetime where a Tim Heidecker lives in the same world as me.
The genius of Tim Heidecker to me is that he really rides that line where in any group of say 4 or more people, at least one if not most of them aren’t going to understand what’s happening, but for the one person who does the punchline is actually as much about seeing others react and not understand what the hell they’re looking at. Yeah part of it fuels that feeling of superiority like you feel smart enough to “get it” while most people around you are clueless, but I think what sets him apart is that it’s not JUST about getting a weird reaction from people, and it’s not JUST about catering to weirdos and stoners. It’s everything all at the same time and you can tell there’s a ton of thought put into everything he puts out. I don’t want to say better than Kaufman cause that’s just looking for a fight, but certainly equally as innovative.
Also where he says, "hundreds of stars in the universe" 😂
"On Cinema at the Cinema" is a comedic genius
Having Tim and Eric debut while I was in high school will forever be a treasure

This was a really brilliant analysis. I think it's hard to say Tim Heidecker is underrated....but he is also...which is part of the brilliance. For all it's wort, Ryan O'Flanagan is a smaller audience but I think deservers some attention too. Dead Kevin is a severally under rated sketch show.
