I like the way you have set up your couch area. It seems to be cosier and more like an outdoor room.
That snowball viburnum is beautiful!
Hi Sydney! I enjoy all of your videos and just wanted to say that I also appreciate how gracious you are in consistently explaining Why you decided to do what you do with Your yard, LOL! I think you've done a wonderful job with both the interior and the garden areas. It's a fresh take but still true to the overall style of your home. Keep 'em coming! 🥰
😳I’m terrified of the black widow situation in our yard! I 🥰 love your seating set up! People are kind bossy/nosy!😂 You DoYou!!!
It’s much nicer watching someone fast forward weeding than doing it yourself 😂. The new grass looks healthy!!
Sydney I love your simplicity and your graciousness, you make me smile. You’re doing a great job!😊🌷🪴🌳
Your snowball viburnum ❤❤❤ A showstopper in your backyard.
I’m in Texas and everything either stings ya, stabs you sticks you or bites you! I am a glove wearer and I store my gloves in the house so nothing crawls in them!!
Me too. I wear mostly light weight with coated fingers and palms. They wash great.
My leather gloves are mostly for heaver jobs
Yes, seeing the weeding before and after is very satisfying. The backyard view is so glorious. I just love it, especially the viburnum in bloom!
Eeeek!! Glad to hear you are now a fan of wearing gloves! Sydney, anything you have ventured to do, you appear to research the task at hand before jumping in. Best of luck in your decision making on the bees. The viburnum is gorgeous! I totally understand the couch arrangement. Enjoy your spring weather.
You are right about the type of bee you would be raising. Italian is the most gentle. You will have to keep an eye out for a change in Temperment and have a source to buy a queen to requeen your hive if needed. Also with gentler bees you will need to stay proactive with mite control. As far as neighbors, as long as your bees are not a aggressive cross (and you will know if they are) you and your neighbors will be fine. I started with Italian and stopped wearing the veil and gloves because it wasn't necessary. But when I moved up to North TX the type of bees I keep are a little more intense but are more resistant to pest. Do your homework on Southern Hive Beatles, Wax moth, and for sure Varroa mites. Think about how organic you are willing to garden. We deal with pest control differently now. Also, if you invest in a flow hive think about how you would deal with a sick hive. I am old school. And lastly if you want honey you will definitely want more than one hive, really to be successful long term you need more than one. I love beekeeping. I have learned alot the hard way. Finally joined a local club in my county and delivered queens for a commercial beekeeper. It is something that you will always be learning about.
Thanks for sharing such good info!
Thank you so much for the information! So valuable! I am going to be taking classes because I want to learn about pests etc. I gardening organically right now. I dont use chemicals unless absolutely necessary and use at the lowest strength possible when I do have to!
Bees. Love them. Here comes the but…Our neighbor brought in hives. I have a small pond. Honestly we could not sit in our yard and enjoy the water feature because of the bees. If we tried to sit on the patio with a drink it didn’t work out. We were not happy. I am a gardener. I have always had bees naturally. But not hives if bees invading. Also, husband is allergic to bee and wasp stings. Just a perspective to consider.
I love watching weeding in time lapse. I wish it went that quickly in real life although it is gratifying when you are finished.
i was thinking that too
Hi Sydney. I just finished setting up my FlowHive here in Melbourne, Australia. Now I am going toward a winter so I don't think that the little bees are active at this time but I have heaps of fruit trees like citrus, avocado and olive and a lot of purple flowers. Now you can either purchase the bees or find a local bee keeper or try to entice the bees to come by sprinkling lemongrass oil all around the opening of your hive.
Make sure that you give it a couple of coats of exterior paint. I have placed mine at the bottom of my garden well away from neighbours and I have two sources of water close by. If I can't entice them to come I will probably be buying my bees. But good on you for doing this. More people should be doing this. Putting together the FlowHive is a bit lengthy but if you and your husband have patience it is well worth it. We painted ours a two toned purple and I will be doing some stencilling on it. Bring on Spring! It looks really cute too sitting in the garden. Good luck with it! Cheers.
No spiders for me. I am sorry so many people are against killing them, but I have a great fear of them. You have done an amazing job with your new home and landscaping. As for the bees. If this is something you have time for and are wanting to do it, I say go for it. I know nothing about bees, but love their honey.
Sydney, your back yard looks so pretty, I don’t know anything about bees, but it would be interesting to follow your journey with them. Love your style, thank you for sharing your gardens.
I like your seating area set up, makes sense to have, glad you did not get bit, your yard looks so inviting, my kind of place, I know you’ll be happy once no more anticipated frost. Look forward to your next video.
I have two bee hives in Northern California. I’d suggest that you attend a meeting of your local beekeeper’s club which is (COBA) Central Oklahoma Beekeepers Association. That will give you a chance to find out about keeping bees in your area. They usually see Nucs at a lower price to members but you don’t have to be a member to attend meetings. I’m familiar with the Flow hive but don’t believe it allows you a chance to work your bees and check for Verona mites or treat for them without impacting your honey. Some people have started with a Flow have but have switched to regular hives.
Your backyard has changed so much, it is so pretty!!
Good morning Sydney, Thank you again for sharing your beautiful yard and gardens. I would nix the bees...lots more work than you can imagine! ❤from GA! ☺
Love how your garden is shaping up. Re beehives, ask Jim Putnam of Horttube. He has one in urban Raleigh, NC.
Lynne here from Canada. Bees sound wonderful although I have no experience. Everything is coming together so nicely and I like that you are a mindful gardener and plan things out. That’s my jam.
I’m so glad you’re sharing the progression of your beautiful back garden this spring. I look for to seeing it fill in. Regarding the bees, I haven’t got experience but you might consider contacting your extension office. Ours has a bee program, and I imagine yours does as well. Extension offices and the Master Gardener’s program in general offers scientific, research based information to home gardeners. I know our beekeepers would be thrilled to share their first hand experience with anyone looking into beekeeping. Good luck!
Glad you had your good gloves on. Better to be safe! Last year I was wearing a pair of gloves with mesh on the backs and was bit by a BW through the mesh on the back of my hand. Dang, he got stuck in the mesh and I couldn’t get him off 😬 🕷️. I now wear all leather gloves and sleeves when in the garden. I went for care immediately not knowing what to expect. I had a fever on and off for three days and a welt that burned, then itched for days.
Hi Sydney
Big job, weeding. Well done. I've no experience with beekeeping. Love to follow your journey with it ❤
Sydney, go to lazy dog fam if you want ANY kind of fig trees or information.
You are doing a beautiful job of your yard. It looks do fresh and clean!
Lazy dog farm!
😳 eeeek! I’m glad you had gloves on! Enjoy your channel so much! Love all the things you have accomplished in such a short amount of time.
Sydney, My next door neighbor has had bees which have swarmed in my yard 5 times. I had to contact the local bee club and have someone remove them. The concern is they are looking for a home and can locate in your chimney or siding. Not a fan. The swarming is an amazing spectacle with thousands of bees creating a huge football shape. The swarming prevented me from working in my garden and yard several times
Local bee groups are great sources of good information. My 10 year heartbreak with bees involves raccoons, skunks, robber bees, swarms, and finally bears!
Love your garden.
Plow and Hearth has lovely fountains.
I’m in my 4th year of beekeeping in my small suburban backyard. I’ve had up to 4 hives in my small yard but have moved all but 2 to another location since more than 2 in this space is a bit too many bees for visitors and neighbors. You definitely need a water source that is more inviting than your neighbors pools. Especially when temps are high. And make sure to have it out early. Once they find a water source, they tell all their friends…even if it’s a neighbors pool or pond. You want to orient the hive in a way that forces the bees to come out and then fly up out of the people paths. You can do that with a fence or a shrub, etc. They will take awhile before they forage around the hive. They give directions to each other to find resources and those resources are typically 50’ to 5 miles from the hive. Anything closer is just in their fly zone, but they will eventually forage closer to home. I’m intrigued by flowhives myself but have no experience with them as of yet. I’d actually consider switching to horizontal hives as there is much less heavy lifting and I do this by myself. It’s such a rewarding hobby. I think being a gardener is the best intro to beekeeping. It’s also what got me interested. I recommend helping someone who has bees to get a feel for it. Have fun!!
Thank you so much for the info! I will definitely have a large saucer with rocks filled with water for them. I will have them tucked back by my raised beds. entrance will face south and they will get morning/ early afternoon sun and evening shade. I will learn as I go but I am taking classes!
Agree..that
is how I would put it...
Try...Way fair. Many different sites...depends on what you want to spend. ❤
I like the sectional layer out the way it is. It helps define a “Room” in the back yard.
Enjoyed watching! Dont know anything about Bees other than they are good for the garden and earth.
So satisfying to get weeds cleaned out, we’re still too cool to get out into the garden. I have a lot to do this year, I am downsizing my garden spaces because it is getting to be too much. Luckily I have a 15 year old grandson who is always looking for ways to make money.
Your back yard looks lovely as is, but if you wanted to break up the long horizontal expanse of gray wicker on the back of the settee sofa (the side facing the gardens), you could put an attractive work table or a group of large pots with perennials (boxwoods?) along that edge.
We have bees and had to give up our pool for the little kids because the bees were in the pool constantly . People constantly getting stung , neighbors came to hate us ! I wear gloves because i was weeding and pulled some lantana back there was a pygmy rattler about 3 inches from my hand .
I live in Norman in a new build neighborhood and my neighbor directly across the street had 4 hives. I literally didn’t even know the whole first year we lived here and never noticed a bunch of bees or anything! We’ve lived here 6 years and her bees have only been noticed twice when they were swarming! She quickly retrieved them (my teen son even got to help her!) I’m allergic to bees so I was interested to see how it went in the beginning. In 6 years we’ve never had an issue. My husbands Uncle, grandfather and father were also experienced bee keepers. Go for it!
Your garden is beautiful and your seating as arranged currently is very welcoming! Several family members have bees but all are in rural areas, they did join local bee groups in the early years of beekeeping.
Canadian gal here. You called your toque or beanie a toboggan. I actually went back a couple times making sure I heard right. We call a long snow sled a toboggan. That term is new to me. 😊
Commonly called toboggan in West Virginia where I grew up. (toque?)
We call it a toboggan here in NC.
@tinafehr8394 Me too! 😝 🇨🇦
I’m from Minnesota, and a long sled for snow is called a toboggan. Haha. Never heard a hat being called that!
@@judyhayes9819 yes, we call a warm knitted hat a toque or often a beanie if it’s lightweight.
I find it interesting the different terminology 😁.
Hi Sydney
I like the sectional position. Creates a room that way. Keep the round fire pit. Safer without a sharp cornered fire pit. I despise sharp corners. Unsafe and too harsh architecturally. Agree that the attached hose would be better away from the flower box. Nice work as usual.
She wants a rectangular fountain, not fire pit.
Hi again
I looked up the flow hives and I must say that I would choose them if I did consider beekeeping. The idea of just turning on the tap to harvest the honey looks easy🎉❤
Just a little something, something here. Where there is a small b/w spider there are the moms/dads too. I would have thought with such cold winters it might help with that situation but they are hardy. Not sure about the brown recluse but hopefully you don't have those. Spiders love the wood people stack up for their fireplaces and it seems to draw them. Also before slipping into those gloves, be sure to check them. I usually step on them to be sure nothing inside. I do this with my shoes too. Yard is looking really buff...just be careful outdoors. I would not (just me saying) do the bee thing as it just an added work for you and seems there are many others things that await you outside. Love, love...take care! Happy Easter ~
Check garden clogs and boots too! Even if inside, I've fround some critters in mine.😮
Sidney, bees are SO important…..I think it’s a FABULOUS idea👏👏👏👏
I'm so happy to see the real lawn in the backyard ❤
I agree with what you said about the sectional-you have multiple focal points--enjoy the one you want😊
Loved the speedy weeding! We agree, it is sooooo satisfying to watch. 🤗
Sorry to laugh but you were hilarious when you were explaining the black widow situation. 😂 Good idea wearing gloves all the time now. 😝
Looking great Sydney! Yeah I would be that for most spiders, but I also just started wearing gloves because of getting poke by thorns.
I love the way you have the sectional! It’s inviting and welcoming, and creates a sense of its own space.
Yes, you have explained previously about the sofa situation but I guess viewers forget seeing that your back garden is so pretty. I applaud you on your new beekeeping project🐝🐝🐝 I have no experience but knowing you through these videos ,I know you will be very thorough in your preparation and installation of the beehives lucky little bees..Good Luck Sydney,
Hi, 👋🏽I love LSU fig and Brown Turkey! So sweet and yummy!
Glad you're ok and will be wearing gloves now. I dislike them myself but had a similar experience with a brown recluse. Afraid that black widow would have been rehomed to another location, if possible.I'm not afraid of spiders, in general, and prefer not to kill things but wouldn't want that one hanging around and creating more.
Your raised beds look great. The fence though needs something like Tommys expertise on the espalier you had at your last house. That would look awesome as he does a great job.
We will be doing espalier on them at some point! :)
I DO love the natural grass and less dense planting along the fence. I also like how the seating is positioned 👍🏻
Yes,wear your gloves. I don't like to wear gloves, but its necessary. I planted a Chicago fig and another one last year. I think I'm going to buy one that you have and pot it up.
I'm so glad to hear you are thinking about becoming a bee keeper. Good luck.
You'll be fine with 1 hive, just go on and do it. Bees are great, y'all will love it! And yes I have been an urban backyard bee keeper for 4 years.
You are correct! Zooming weeds is VERY zen! 😊
There is nothing better than local honey! My aunt lived on the family farm and had bee boxes and every time we would visit we always came home with a jar of delicious honey! I know you'll do it right for all concerned. The viburnum looks amazing already.
I find black widows here every year. Not so little. I have to remind myself to wear gloves. And honestly paranoid one is in glove.
The grass looks great!
The biggest Black Widow I ever saw was when I was living in Texas - no thank you! I now live in North Carolina, Zone 7, and the Brown Turkey Fig grow really well here - they lose their leaves in the winter, but don't die back - and we get 100s of large figs off of just one large tree (about 15-20 feet). I also planted Violetta and Chicago Figs a couple of years ago and they're still small, but starting to take off. No figs on those yet. I'm going to plant a golden fig variety this spring, I think. I've started a collection! Editing to add that all of mine are planted in the ground, not pots. So in zone 7, they're doing well through our winters.
If you move forward with bee keeping, please take us along with this journey; Im very much interested in learning too.
I think the way you have the sofa/set-up makes it more like an outdoor living room; imagining the way people would use it, it makes sense to me the way you oriented it. I also tend to think (having moved a lot ourselves) you may be dealing with...that expensive stuff, suited to original site, making it work. IDK, we've done that. I like the way it all looks.
Loving everything you are doing at this property. The snowball viburnum is looking outstanding.
GOOD PROJECT COMING UP,
I look forward to learning about bees with you
My deck loveseat doesn't face my garden because it makes the most sense to me with the placement of other deck furniture and the traffic flow. I rarely sit when I am outdoors anyway!☺ The furniture works well for outdoor meals and hosting guests. I really like your grass in the back yard: good choice!
Beautiful garden 💚 if a black widow spider is like the Aussie Red Back eek bad news, glad you are ok, gloves sound a good idea if they are around. Hope you get bees a great addition 🐝. Love your channel thank you 💜
you had me at black widow ...my parents have seen them before, they recall when they were super young. i have thankfully never seen 1, from a distance would be nice ... glad you were (& are) safe & sound. take care. ( ;
So happy for you Sydney, your home outdoor and indoor looks great. Im so happy NO haters si far 😂😂
Hi Sydney. 🐝Up here in Vancouver Canada and what is popular here are Mason Bees. I recommend you check them out because 1) they do not sting, so they would not be an issue in that way for you or your neighbors. 2) We actually don’t eat honey so the work involved would not be satisfying for us. 3) Apparently Mason bees do something like ten times the pollinating that honey bees do. Our Library is currently lending Mason Bees, so I will be in touch with them when we get back home. We also have a HoneyBee center here. Good luck. Either way, it’s a cool thing to do!🐝
Yes, Canadian here also! Long sleds were called toboggan. I love your beanie though!
Nice job cleaning in the garden bed area. I’ve never ran across black widow in my plants only around plastic potted plants under the lip but I only wear gloves when planting I use a small hand shovel to pull weeds out. I love the fig tree I’m in SoCal zone 10b haven’t checked if I can grow it here but I’ve seen them in Lowe’s. Getting. Bee hive would be awesome keep us posted if you do and how it works.
My first time to comment…very nice Sydney! Really enjoying and counting on your videos.. love the cat coming thru, all of it! The addition of bees would be awesome.. you don’t see that..all so beautiful and learning from you! Thanks!
Thank you for watching!
Good luck on your figs. I just planted a couple of Chicago hardy this past fall. I have 10 other specialty varieties that I have yet to plant in the ground.
North Oklahoma zone 7a/b
I have two years old Chicago hardy fig in the pot and it’s doing really good, producing lots of figs.
Just want to say I’m loving your yard ❤
We live in Oregon. My parents have a fig tree, not sure the variety, they are green figs. They are super yummy. Their fig tree is easily over 14 feet tall and prob close to that in width it’s absolutely beautiful and HUGE!! My parents sell their figs in the late summer, because their tree produces so much fruit. I’ve never tried the purple variety, but I’m sure just as good. I believe we are in zone 8b
My parents kept bees and they lived in town. They always gave free jars of honey to their neighbors and no one complained!
I feel like You need a water feature under the window box it will look beautiful
Btw Great job on both yards
Looks amazing!🙌💯
Omg Sydney yay! Sorry not sorry that happened to you 🤭🤭 because it’s Gloves all day! For me. I used to not care until I 1. Had a similar incident as you (picked up a pot and managed to land a finger on a slug and didn’t know till I put the pot down and felt the stickiness 😵💫) and 2. Realized how much damage my hands were taking when I wouldn’t use gloves. Just find some that feel the most comfortable for you 😊
Boy! I could go on and on with this. There is only a fair amount of work in the beginning as far as treating your bees for pass and disease. The busy time of the year is in September when it is time for honey harvest. I had a bee mentor. She had over 25 years of raising bees in the Kansas Missouri area. I took classes at my local community college. The instructor had over 50 years of Beekeeping and has retired from his regular professional business and now has a complete Beekeeping supply store I always ordered my bees Bring maybe even sooner and be delivery comes in early April or mid April. It’s kind of amazing because I would go to this location and there is a giant flatbed truck with over 1000 crates of bees for people to pick up that had ordered them, the queen is held in a very small compartment by itself, I drove home with my bees and queen in the back of my car and of course, some do manage to get out and fly around. So it’s a fascinating hobby and it’s beneficial for humans and the globe. I would not listen to the negative remarks by the way, I don’t know what type of pool your neighbors have, but if they’re chlorinated, that is not where bees will go, or have a 9 acre pond behind me and I have a perfect set up to raise the bees again they did not go over to my neighbors for a water supply. If there’s someplace nearby that has freestanding water they will probably find it.
Thank you for the info! I decided to give it a shot! I ordered my bees Friday! :) I think it will be very relaxing and rewarding! I find myself watching bees in the garden a lot! I follow them around and film there so I foresee this being a hobby I really love!
I notice and love that you painted the dividing grid on the French doors----awesome--how did you do that---it looked like it was in between the double glass😊😊😊
They are inserts that come off. :)
Xc90 wagon brake light replacement
Hi , I’ve been watching your videos and the house looked very familiar to me is this Linda Vater’s old home?
Yes, it is.
Looking great ! 😊
Thank you!
I like how the sitting area looks sitting that way..is your grass in the backyard fescue? TIA!!
👍🏼 on the bees :)
Thank you! Yes, the grass is fescue!
@@SydneyDorman thanks!!
You should try the LSU fig! I get the most production off of mine. 😊 I’m in zone 8a but really more 7b.
Figs are so easy to root. Sydney make your own stone fountain. Visit a stone yard in your area and find the perfect stone. Then drill for your water pipe. Install a catch basin. You and Tommy can do it! Love me some honey bees. Question are you concerned about food source with neighborhoods spraying so much insecticide? Thanks for the video. Yard looks amazingly beautiful.
I dont see a ton of spraying in our neighborhood but I would be naive to think people dont use them. I think that comes from being uneducated about pesticides. I definitely rarely see companies spraying in the daytime when bees area active so that is good. I am most concerned about mosquito spraying.
The garden is shaping up nicely Sydney. Sorry, but I would have killed that black widow spider. I really hate spider's! I love the water feature idea and can't wait ti see what you end up getting.
I can’t imagine putting my hand on a black widow.
Most definitely gave me the chills!
Rattle snakes and black widow spiders are not welcome. Gloves are a necessity unfortunately. We were getting warmer weather in NM. Now it’s cold again. Not sure my peaches survived. Happy weeding!
Yuck a black widow!! I dislike spiders so much and when our daughter was 18 month she was bitten by a brown recluse and what damage that spider did !! We get our house sprayed ever since that happened!!! So glad spring is finally here!!🌸🌸🌷🌷
I see recluse spiders in my garden so I always wear gloves!!
One hive is plenty. You can always get more later. You will be a newbee and one is a good start. I never had a problem with the neighbors. my bees would takeoff around nine in the morning and come back again around three in the afternoon. It was so much fun to watch all my bees takeoff for the day and then return. My neighbor next to me had a pool and a little kids, and the bees were never a bother at her place. I can only say that for my garden I had an abundance of tomatoes, plants and lemons on my lemon plant, I have also considered doing a flow hive rather than my standard. It seems to have less work involved and free flow honey. My first year with bees, I had a good supply of honey my second year my bees came to a horrible late April blizzard my third year, I had a very large production of honey. I gave a lot to family and friends and then I sold quite a bit down the road from me at a local produce market. Nothing better than your very own backyard honey!🐝🪻🍯
Thank you for the info! I decided to give it a try! I forsee it being a hobby I really love and enjoy! I cant wait!
I live in California and we have tons of black widows. My children were raised, knowing to never put their hand under a rock or pot without looking first they also had to turn over their toys to make sure there was no black widow, hiding there luckily for us, black widows are more scared of us and run away before they attack.
We also live in SoCal and find black widows all the time, especially in summer. They love to hide in dark places like under my kids bicycle seats, toys, under patio furniture and pillows, in the eaves of the house and of course under plant pots, wood, rocks. Kinda like snakes that we have found. SoCal in the warmer weather sometimes is not fun! 😳
What about using a limestone vessel sink for your water feature. Already has a center bottom hole. Not sure what you could use for elevation though.
Hi Sydney, I wish you the very best in your honeybee endeavors. I hope you get all your questions answered. Wish I could comment but I have no experience with beekeeping for honeybees. When I commented about raising native bees in your last post, I was thinking about the pollinating side of things for your flowers and veggies. I wasn't thinking about producing honey! Your garden is such an inspiration.Thank you for sharing your garden journey with us!
I have been gardening for about 50 years! Wear your gloves always! Be good to your hands you will need them.😂 when you get a little older you will realize the abuse you have given to your hands. Love your channel.
Love your garden. Also really like the color on your fence and garage. Would you share the name of the paint?
I have a short I posted on the color. I dont know it off the top of my head. I will find and let you know!
