    The other thing you have to remember. Humans are also analog. Your ears will hear things differently depending on whether they are fresh or not. After a few hours the stereocilia in your ear will start to lay down and not respond as well as they do at first. You loose high frequencies mostly. And that's before we even get into the psychological aspects of listening to music. Sometimes a song you love will sound boring or exciting just based off your mood.

      @@mikedowd66 I admire artists genuinely trying to make the best-sounding records they can, even if their notions aren't closely tied to reality.
      If the master tape degrades so much, that could explain why some feel CD remasters don't sound as good as an original vinyl pressing. But then you have people spending $45+ for new audiophile vinyl pressings made from those aging master tapes!? And the latest audiophile trend is spending hundreds of dollars for a reel-to-reel tape copy of the original master tapes to play on hot-rodded vintage two-track tape decks, because vinyl suffers multiple generations of distortion in cutting an acetate, making a stamper, then stamping out the vinyl. I've heard reel-to-reel tapes played on $$$$ stereos and they sound great... because they're playing on a $100,000 system.
      Meanwhile others keep re-buying digital tracks at ever-higher sample rates (96 kHz, 192 kHz, 384 kHz, ...).
      Love music more than equipment.

      @NuttGreez Před rokem +23

      I think Neil's more emphasizing the "capturing the moment" aspect of a rough of first mix. Projects can quickly devolve and ideas/inspiration are often "lost in distillation". There are obviously cuts/edits to this conversation, I doubt he was referring entirely to recording medium in that moment.

    I'm no fan of Rick Rubin as a producer really, but he's absolutely right in what he's saying here. The more passes you make on a mix in analogue the more the signal degrades (note: they are not talking about age-related tape degradation). It makes it a tricky and risky medium to work with, and with how good digital recording processes are these days it isn't really worth it too often.
    Plus, pretty much everything is going to digital mastering on CDs for the most part anyway, and digital to analogue mastering is likely a better option than all analogue even if you are looking to release vinyl.

    • @skierpage
      @skierpage Před rokem

      Nice analogy, but more like the "rainbow of colors" are in the extreme ultraviolet part of the spectrum far beyond what you can actually see.
      All the digital artifacts in a well-recorded CD are mathematically provably beyond hearing range. All the real-world deviations from that (jitter in the sampling clocks, non-linear deviations in the digital conversion, etc.) have been ironed out over the last 45 years.
      I don't fault anyone buying a 96 kHz or higher-res digital track if they think it sounds better than CD, nor people who prefer vinyl for the sound. Some of my vinyl records sound great (played on a fairly high-end Rega turntable and Sumiko cartridge).

    • @commodoor6549
      @commodoor6549 Před rokem

      @@skierpage Analog's rainbow characterization comes from its continuous values. What digital gains in its transmission quality it loses to its intrinsic accuracy of the nuance of sound. And the endpoint, where the sound hits our senses, ie., human hearing, is entirely analog.
      There's a reason why Rick Rubin would opt for analog synths in the creation of his music. Nonetheless, the digital storage of information is almost infallible over time, so it's the standard for storage of data. And that's really what Neil and Rick are saying, create on analog, then transfer to digital.

    • @skierpage
      @skierpage Před rokem

      @@commodoor6549 Read the Wikipedia article on the Nyquist-Shannon sampling theorem. Just because you haven't understood it, doesn't mean it isn't provably true. There's an upper limit to the frequencies your analog ear can detect, therefore a digital signal can _perfectly_ match the analog signal. All the analogies of stair steps and imperfect 1s and 0s and gratings break down, because the discrepancies with the original signal all lie beyond the range of human hearing.
