We have a few "spooky" tunes up on CZcams that can get you in the mood for Halloween! First off, J.S. Bach's "Toccata and Fugue in d Minor."
#halloween #spooky #bach #Navy
Spooky ? No . It's lovely . .I like this different interpretation , as well . Thank you and Happy Halloween . .!
A little bit unusual, but great!
I guess Halloween is a good excuse to share some great music. This is a very skillful transcription, and a fabulous performance. Great job!
Bach has been inspiration and wise to Us. Long Life to Bach.
amdg
very interesting,thankyou
I had the privilege to be in the Navy Band in the 60's. Always loved playing this. What a bunch of great musicians.
This a technical piece played beautifully ..and thats one wonderful and passionate conductor
This is the best I have ever heard the band. Good conductor.
As music has always been a part of my life now for over 50 years, this is probably the finest sounding band that I have ever heard in my life! Such sheer depth with the lower brass, (and one string bass player) and the low woodwind instruments. Bravissimo!
2:17 Dang, Mr Obama killin it on the contrabass clarinet
😁😂😂😂😭😭 riiiigh
lol
HAHAH
Aria Blaze too bad that was his second term
Obama plays the skin flute.
WOW!! That is without doubt, the best rendition of that music i have ever heard. And a big clap for the conductor as well. Well done.
This is played absolutely excellent. A band with this shape is difficult to conduct through a such complicated piece (I did it myself!!). The (Wood-) Bass- Section has a fantastic sound.
GREAT!!
Low woodwinds add such an amazing texture to the ensemble
Awesome Brass section. The Band is one of the best.
Absolutely incredible. The playing and recording is great.
I gave it a thumbs up before the first note. It’s the US Navy band after all.
Loved every minute of it!!!!!!! :) Listen to you guys all the time!
this band played so beautiful! strong bass and good balanced
Fantastic group. Fantastic conductor. Fantastic piece.
@DasBullWy Mallory Thompson has been and always will be one of my most favorite conductors ever!
obama plays contrabass clarinet?
Too bad he had to stop playing in the last few bars. Probably had to switch to contra-alto for the next piece…
Its not but looks like it. Even though Obama is Commander and Chief of the Armed Forces, he does not get to wear any of the uniforms, having never been in military. That one is in uniform.
Note that the civilian conductor is wearing a plain black dress. Same principle.
Come to think of it, even though no President of the US has assumed personal command of troops in the field since George Washington, and none has even threatened to since Zachary Taylor (in 1850); there must be laws on the books to cover the contingency. In that case, the President would assuredly be wearing the uniform of an officer of the highest rank.
In any case, not relevant here. Were the President of the US to play in such an ensemble (if he could find the time), it would be as a civilian.
😂
A superb rendition,;,what more can I say.
BELO, BELÍSSIMO !!!! (grata. Malu / Brasil)
Excellent performance!
Beautiful sound !
this was incredible!!!!
@GreySarasa This is in fact a concert band. Most composers include parts for bass and harp in works for wind band; it's just that the supply of harpists and bassists is a lot smaller than trumpets and saxophones!
Chills from beginning to end. Awesome! :D
Beautiful interpretation and performance. This transcription really shows off the middle and lower brass. The overall blend of the band is spot on. BZ from the old retired MUC.
Soy Mexicano y me encantan las presentaciones de la US Navy Band. Ojalá algún día pueda conseguir los CDs o DVDs.
How marvellous!
Beautiful music
Wow!!! this is awesome!!
Exquisite tempo pacing! Conductor has the band flow from pianissimo to fortissimo so gracefully, like waves washing ashore. 🥰
Bach was awesome!
Love the conductor too
Amazing!!!
Fantastic !
and my God, her conducting. so good.
Great performance!
Briliant arrangement.
My class is going to play this song...now I feel very, very scared...You guys are awesome, by the way :)
I actually used to not like this and now it's one of my favorites
Bach Rocks!
@CPTRv1972 Thanks! We hope to have more videos and recordings to post soon.
I wish i could see them live
Wow !! Just wow
Ótimo ainda não tinha ouvido de forma orquestrada .
Seeing amazing performer like this only makes me wawnt to be as good s them. I swear I will play in professional bands like these. Its my dream. 5 years of playing the trumpet, guitar, piano, vocals, and marimba. I've practiced and played well around 3000 hours. I'm only a freshmen in highschool. Someday i swear to fucking god i will become amazing, and if able more than this. Just you wait world, I will scream music to you!
@Jason Hong bruh i just found this video
Just curious are you in a professional band now, 7 years later?
And im an 8th grade trumpet player right now im the best in my region
WOW ! ❤
The Boston Symphony of concert bands.
nicely done.
Classic Bach
Bravo.
Bravissimi
I'm loving the Contra Bassoon and CB CL! Do you have an alto clarinet in the ensemble? Most of the college wind ensembles I know have someone to play it on important pieces even though its a "shunned" instrument.
contrabassoon is a dilf😍😍😍
very good is very beautiful (BWV 565)
Dat bass trombone on the low D at the end....
👏👏👏
Hi after 10 years
:29..wait a minute...:30...he looks familiar behind there...:31..contrabassoon you're in the way...:32..move back just a little bit for me....:33-35...that's it..keep moving...:36....Barack??? is that YOU?.....:37-38...I knew it!
Wow...
Nice
The World's Finest...... Bravo! :)
@usnavyband
what instrument do you play?
8:33
Aw look at that piccolo Trumpet
goosebumps begin at 4:09 ..
Actually Alto oboe;-FG I, it was originally called 'cor Englais' or English horn, by europeans owing to the fact that in England a few hundred years ago French horn players were scarce ,the Alto oboe or English horn, playing a `1/5 th removed from concert would often, easily take the place of French Horn Player/part..& so this practise was a quick solution-widespread gave rise to the Alto oboe being called, 'cor anglais'-English Horn. Most old scores refer..cor' Ang'l or something similar.
Say hi to my cousn in law who is married to Joe Dollard (unsure of her first name). We have never met, but as a former Navy veteran, I am very proud of her (and Joe).
OKAY CONTRA REEDS
epic
7:37 the lick
this song sound much better in wind instrument than string or it just that this band is that good?
low reeds for the win
Alberto Martinez agreed. What I would have given for a contra Bassoon.
Contrabass Clarinet 😎
I noticed that, too. My mom plays like that. No idea how, but she's really good. Or she was when she played regularly. And this guy is too, I guess, to make it into this band. Looks weird, but hey, it works. :)
i want my band to play this for uil
Joe Templet my band is playing this for UIL this year along with Eric whitacres Equus and my favorite March of all time Through the storm and sunshine.
What is the name for this kind of ensemble? You have strings, but you also have concert band instruments. I haven't seen anything like this before.
Michael L. you, of course have a right to your own comments. But, I disagree with your assessment that this performance is not great. I dare you to find a better concert band ANYWHERE! Coming from a musician who has an advanced graduate degree in music, and like Terry C.'s comment about having been "in the game" for awhile, (1979 in my case) trust me friend, it's the finest professional band that I've ever heard. Eastman School of Music's rendition of this work, (a very fine music school) and which can be found on YT pales greatly in comparison to the US Navy concert band's rendition. BTW, my father for years was a professional church organist for over 30+ years until his death in 1994. I heard him many a time play this classic Bach composition on the organ performing in his own concerts. If he were alive today and could listen to and watch this performance I guarantee that he would be impressed.
that english horn solo at 7:14 is one of the hardest solos I've ever heard. not even surprised they botched it.
sounded perfectly fine to me
8:20 that high note. Why?
oh shit, did the tuba stop playing, breath, and come back in on the last note, or was there supposed to be a slight pause at the end?!?!?!?!?!?!?! WUT DA.
4:46 English horn solo yay
3:24
Excuse me Marco, my Statement Stands.!! You obviously do not understand that, which I posted.? It is very clear English. This is not popular theory !, in early years gone by in England,- the Alto oboe was used if there were no French horn players.Somebody had to play the Fr'Hrn part &the cor Anglais could read the Fr' horn part with very little effort. 40 yrs ago, I wrote/transcribed music proffesionally,& many times worked thro' the night for a Concert the next day,& we used whoever could do it.
acho que fica mais bonita no órgão
The World's Finest is finer that ever.
Check out this cool video, search "Otto Nemenz Cycling Team"! With the music of Bach!
They're so good, they're scary. What grounds them in reality are the minute intonation issues here and there. But let's see YOU play this entirely in tune. I can't, and I've been in the Game since 1967. The Conductor is SUPERB.......
@Ramone Smith lol
3:53 Hail to the guy playing the yamaha motif workstation :D :D :D
He is playing the celeste not an electronic device, I believe.
***** 9aus means the keyboard on the background i think. I agree, a bit of a not-fitting instrument in a classical concert :-)
It's a glockenspiel... Or the. Ella, whichever you prefer. They are quite common in concert bands, a type of mallet percussion.
I meant bells.
Otherwise you go to the 3 minute 53 second mark like 9aus said, and look for the gray keyboard with "Yamaha Mo...." written in font size 200 on the back ;-)
3:00 trumpet player looks a little crooked
And is that Anderson Cooper on Contrabassoon? #sexy
👻👻👻🎃🎃🎃
Holy shit Obama on contrabass clarinet
That little picalo in the begining killed the mood of the piece almost instantaniously.
Sorry guys - the tempo is too slow in many parts of the Toccata and of the Toccata-like parts in the Fugue. I know it´s hard for an orchestra but still ... Besides that: I hardly can hear an adequate phrasing. But that´s the salt and pepper in Bach´s music and it could be played even by a whole orchestra. If you are insecure about that - no prob - give me a mail and I´ll send you some suggestions for phrasing and articulation. - Anyway - love to see a brass band that cares for classical music. So thumbs up!
How arrogant
+anonymusum I'm going to go out on a limb and say the Director of Bands at one of the best music schools in the country doesn't care about your opinion on her interpretations
Actually, it doesn't need to be played "bat out of hell", though organists usually do that to show off their virtuosity. Musically, I think it works better at just about the tempo used here.
Play with Church Organs will be more nice
Conversely, consider this: czcams.com/video/KbDIbcWNM0E/video.html
Heh, good, but no cake. Pipe organs (with proper echo) take the cake.
Dang at 2:30 that was amazing
Haha! THE MAN ON THE LEFT AT 0:37 SORT OF LOOKS LIKE PRESIDENT OBAMA.
O Marco !! you are not understanding, & I have 70 years Study behind me,stick to your theory instead of facts,if you must, I personally have books 150 to 200 yrs old, so how can you possibly be so silly as to try & diss me on this question.? Read up on 'Forsyth's Orchestration' .It does not matter a hoot, who made the first one,or where it was made,or who calls it what.-What counts is the continental musicians dubbed the Alto oboe the 'cor Anglais, because we used it in place of the Fr' Horn.
Not a fan of the arrangement at all...I question the piccolo part in most places. That said, what a great job the conductor has done to get the tempos done properly! Intonation issues keep this from being a GREAT performance.
A few wrong notes, especially among the trumpets, and a lapse in the conductor's group coordination of the treble brass, suffering from a lack of sufficient sound projection and articulation. Overall, a decent performance, but it could have been better. As for Donald Hunsberger's arrangement, he suffers from leftover Hollywood-style addiction to 19th century overdoing of what could have been unaffectedly dignified Baroque interpretation. He needs further re-education in Baroque and Neoclassic styles of wind transcription.
