    I don't think it counts as too much, since these expensive handhelds are still just niche. Handheld PCs are coming out. The Switch is still the only handheld console in the market (assuming you are not counting 3ds and Vita). Also why do people act as if handheld systems are some kind of a new concept. Handhelds have existed since the day of the Game & Watch. Gameboy, GBA, DS, 3ds, PSP, PS Vita, Game Gear, etc. all exist.

      @redring4083 Před rokem +1

      @@HearMeLearn except the official website itself states that Steam Deck is a handheld PC. Valve have no where used the word console. Also Steam is a PC digital store. I think any sort of question of "too many" is coming at the question from the wrong angle. Sure, having 50 different consoles like the PS5 or XBONE is (arguably) a bad thing as it fragments the market as companies are incentivized to get console exclusives. However, there is no chance of these devices fragmenting the market as they are because they all pull from the steam game base. To me this question is more similar to asking if there are too many laptops on the market. Which unless you are looking at it from a very specific angle (choice paralysis and potential for buy overpriced duds due to lack of research) this is undoubtedly a good thing. It's a bunch of companies competing to make the best product they can for their chosen price point which incentivizes them to innovate and not rest on their laurels(cough, Nintendo, cough).

    Based on past products I've purchased / wanted to buy / still would love to get my hands on the 'Playstation PC' could absolutely be viable.
    Granted I have no idea what the gimmick or unique integration should be but they are clever enough to come up with one. When I was deep into minidisc and purchasing a new portable player ever year (possibly some planned obsolescence there tbh of dead units after 365 days of use on the dot..) I still bought a all in one CD/tape/tuner/MD stereo because it meet my needs.
    The only in Japan integrated MD PC would have lived in my dreams constantly if I'd known it's existence, and if I had the $ (and patience) to recreate my old setup now with it I totally would.

    I was going to go on my own "what if" and "how about this" tangent. Ultimately, I hope to see options flourish. We have Nintendo embracing the play anywhere mentality. We have the power to play our PC games anywhere with desktops (mini and the "normal" towers), laptops, and the variety of handheld PC devices out now. Phones are wonderfully viable options thanks to many of the games from indie devs appearing on Android and iOS, along with streaming options from Sony, Microsoft, Steam, and nVidia. It is one hell of a time to be alive!
    If I can be so bold, we all should start speculating on when Sony and Microsoft jump on the whole "switch" style format. How that would work...I have some ideas on how to make it work.

If there is too much competition, the consumer get decision paralysis of which is best for them to buy, the target audience is still rather niche. Other companies might decide it’s not worth developing in (yet) especially if they need to compete with the heavy hitters?

    One of the greatest "tricks" the Steam Deck has that other handhelds just can't achieve, is keeping pretty playable stats when running in 10W mode. I wonder if these newer Z1 chips will be able to keep up the playability of games at much lower TDPs in the same way - because power and high performance is great, but battery life matters _way_ more for a handheld. So that really needs to be targeted specifically and I honestly have my doubts.

    I think we have too many emulation based devices considering most sub $300 smartphones can emulate 75% of what there is to even emulate. Most people already have a capable device ready to go. Use an a console controller with a $20 clip or buy a Razer Kishi if you got the budget and save spending even more on a device, while also not having to carry around another. Streaming, pointless for many people so no opinion and it's pretty much available on everything with a screen. Sony, Nintendo, Valve and MS are the only companies that can subsidize their products enough to make their handhelds attractive price wise. Everyone else is just flooding into a tiny niche market of $700-$1500 handheld PC's. As you mentioned Nintendo is in its own class. Whatever they invent is always good for gaming and technology. Hell i have a "Wiimote" Style smart TV remote that came with the TV and im sure most of you do too. And as Austin showed at the end we already have a good portable gaming cloud device. There are ways to stream pc games on your phone. If the steam deck was locally $400 AUD i'd pick one up and tinker with it but i'd put windows on there. The AyeNeo devices look nice compared to steam deck or anything else. I think they will be ok but the others....

    Back when the Microsoft Xbox game pass PC app and the Microsoft app store was heavily advertised for Windows 10, 6 years ago. Microsoft could have made an Xbox edition Surface pro or even some other portable computer that let you play the Xbox Game pass app on the go. Another thing is all these handheld gaming pc's all have there own flaws. For starters is that the Steam platform requires you have internet to access your Steam library and same goes with most of the other gaming distribution stores like the ones from Ubisoft, Epic Games, EA, Microsoft, and others. But there will always be that battery life and storage issues on these devices. Along with the weird unstandardized sizing and button layouts.

    I'm still waiting for a handheld with ray tracing with gaming from the internal storage using nvme ssds with the option to choose the resolution like 1080p, 2k and even 4k and refresh rates like 120 hz to 240 hz. Like the Intel nuc beast canyon in a handheld device but with upgradeable nvme ssd and upgradeable ram, 1,000 nits brightness mini led or micro led display. Something sony could make with collaboration with nvidia for ray tracing and the cpus from amd and Intel as well but it would be very expensive. Being able to overclock the cpu, gpu with msi after burner with a desktop cpu while also overclocking the ram with xmp. Have the displays manufactured from lg and samsung. For example, the pi max portal highest end version is a handheld device that has a 4k 144 hz mini led display that runs android and supports 5g but the option to run full fledge windows pc games instead of game streaming but game streaming as option for those that want to game stream but support gaming natively from steam, epic games, gog games etc. I have the sony xperia 1 iv android phone with a 4k 120 hz oled display and I play bright memory, ark survival evolved for mobile since both games are pc ports on mobile and I'm still waiting for call of duty war zone to be available on mobile. Bright memory has rtx on pc but ark survival evolved does not support rtx even on the pc version. I'm hoping that very high fidelity visual gaming will be available in a handheld like I mentioned about the pi max portal 4k display.

      Many of them are not that different, I would argue it is better to think of them as closer to laptops than consoles. We can have too many consoles as that implies console exclusives, whereas I would argue you cannot have too many laptops as more laptops just means more competition which implies more innovation to give your own product an edge.

    I legit agree with Microsoft needing to make an Xbox handheld that isn't just a cloud gaming device (but can cloud game). It would probably take over a good market share of the handheld space. The rest of the handheld market is far too niche, not enough support, and the steam deck will likely be the main squeeze for a long time coming for people who want to play pc games and do some cloud and retro gaming. Very few people comparatively want to be paying full budget pc price for handhelds, and likely already have good enough PCs and cloud gaming options already on hand (says guy with a switch, pc, xbox, ps4, and some retro handhelds)

    Yeah and the last time Sony tried to compete with Nintendo on the handheld side, they got kicked badly. The DS sold double of what the PSP sold and the 3ds slaughtered the Vita. Sony is best left making home consoles. There is a reason why Microsoft backed away from the handheld market. They were looking to make one back during the PSP and DS days.

    I think this is the start of a new Handheld market in terms of it replacing/competing with home consoles. If and it's a big if Microsoft can get a gaming version of windows on the market and developers like Dell Asus ect make great hardware for it could be a big plus for the market.
    I'm on board with the ROG and putting my pre-order in this week but it will replace my pc. AMD is definitely leading the mobile market and could lead to a big deal in the near future.

    The 3rd party handhelds would have to create their own service like steam, or find a way to get some profits from the services that are supported on their devices. Like they get X% for allowing xbox cloud, or steam cloud. Or change their product type from generic handhelds to niche feature packed stuff. Otherwise, I don't have much motivation to not buy 1st party when its cheaper and runs the games better and easier
