- Use the GRUB Rescue and Repair tool on Linux to Rescue and Repair the bootloader or other system issues. Figure out how to use GRUB Rescue to boot into a system without having to reinstall or look for a different method of repair. GRUB Rescue is a great utility once you know how to use it on Linux and we'll be using Ubuntu to demo how to use GRUB Rescue today. Fix unknown file system errors or no such partition on Linux.
When you get the GRUB Rescue screen it can be intimidating to try and fix the system from the Command Line Interface that GRUB Rescue offers on Linux/Ubuntu. We'll walk through step-by-step how to use this utility/interface and fix our system and then repair the bootloader on the current disk that we are using. This tutorial is intended for Linux users who've ran into the GRUB Rescue screen on their Linux distro. The process is the same whether you are using Ubuntu, Debian, Arch, Linux Mint, Pop OS, Kali, or any other Linux distro.

Of all the numerous videos I tried watching all day. You saved me in less than 7minutes. Thank you man
You're welcome! Glad things worked out.
Bro😢 I have installed Ubuntu multiple times and then removed it due to its freeze issue and now I am again installing it but it is not loading the GUI, my friend say that it's old bash file is remain there that is preventing from installing new bash file that prevent Ubuntu from installing?😢. Please reply and help me!🙏and I am trying to delete the old bash file but I don't know how to do that
I’m definitely feeling waaaaay less intimidated by Grub. This sits better than just blindly following stack overflow commands. Thanks!
Glad to hear it, no problem
@@SavvyNik I just installed Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and I have this problem. This is a 3 years old video, that gave me an idea what is going on. I tried what you say but I have a problem when listing the partitions at the Grub Rescue (version 2.12) terminal prompt.
Ok, I have 2 SSDS both 2 TB.
hd0 = Windows 11
hd1 = Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
grub> ls (hd1,gpt1)/
efi. System Volume Information
grub> ls (hd1,gpt2)/
error unknown filesystem
I assume my root is on (hd1,gpt2)/ but I can't list it.
Perhaps you know how to solve this for the new Ubuntu; thanks if you can.
ps: It is a shame after I installed Ubuntu 24.04 it seemed to work good just when I rebooted I get this grub rescue screen. I took notes on your old video, but there is probably changes and no longer works.
I wasted a lot of time in watching different videos that didn't help me
But this one saved me
Thanks bro for your efforts 😘
This is amazing, I messed up some ubuntu install too and I was just messing around (I had badly identified the partition until I found this video). Thanks for this mate! :D
Holy moly it works!!! man i've been following your tutorials since 2021 and you always have the answer. Thanks!!
The right video, I've been doing this for past 2 days now and this is the only video that worked. He explained everything ❤️ thank you sir
You're welcome! Glad you liked the video :)
Me too! Glad I found this video!
I thought that boot would end my life in my studies because I didn't know how to fix it. But because of you Brother, I was able to fix that boot on Ubuntu on my laptop and the files I was making for my studies were not lost. Thank you very much brother for this video, my tasks and files that need to be submitted can now be submitted.
Glad to hear this epic fix ;)

I want to say THANKS! without you I never would have gotten the system loaded
Glad things worked out
Great job!! A big thanks from a braziliam guy living on Portugal!!
Holy moly, last time I had to fix GRUB, I had to do reinstall of GRUB and it took nearly a whole day (and a lost previous install of linux) to get it working! You brought that time down to 20 mins here! THANK YOU so much!
It would have been faster but I was too goofy to write down the correct partition the first time >~
Don't forget to use timeshift, it will save you hours of fixing it the next time it happens
Took a while to get to the point, but you know what? It stretched my brain fibers and I learned something! Now I know what to do in the future. Thank you so much.
Love to hear it! Glad you learned something new
Hey SavvyNik, Thank you for helping me fix my dual boot for kali linux after upgrading to Windows 11. i tried to fix this for a few days till i came across your video and first try it worked. After watching so many videos and reading articles
Finally this Worked for me
Thank you soo much ❤️✨
Glad you finally got things settled
I have watched so many videos and strained to understand the procedure let alone the language. You kind sir are a teaching genius. This was the BEST, most followable, most understanding and concise. I applaud you. Thank you so much for this, it helped me like you would not believe. Thumbs up!
You are most welcome :) glad it helped!

You are the best. I had to use translate subtitles to understand. IT is a universal thing. Thank you very much tor sharing. You save me a lot of ressources
You're welcome!
Awesome video, couldn't get a clear answer from online forums and within 10 min I'm no longer intimidated by grub shell :)))
Glad it helped!
im not experienced in computers at all and got so scared when it wouldnt turn but this fixed it and i genuinely feel proud😭thank you
Great job, no problem
Its not work in my lap 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺
Actually my laptop got shut down suddenly due to power failure…
I have dual booting for my hp laptop… where half partition is given to windows and half to ubuntu..
I cant find my partition name…
I tried grub>ls
(proc) (hd0) (cd0) error: failure reading sector 0*0 from ‘hd0’ .
error:failure reading sector 0*0 from ‘hd0’.
How to resolve this issue?
Thank you very much! Everything went very well, and in the end I did it
DUDE, THANK YOU SO MUCH. As someone new to linux I made the mistake of setting my root partition to 20GB. Thankfully I keep my USB with me in case I need to boot into it so I was able to resize it. Upon restarting I got this screen and had no idea what to do since the boot repair tool wasn't working and this fixed everything! Thank you for preventing what would have been hours of confusion and frustration
You are the best. Thank you for uploading this video, you saved my day.
Glad things worked out. No problem.
This is a good video, thanks. I just wanted to install Linux which I did successfully, and I had some trouble booting my system. I believe it was a problem with a video file I attempted to create to fix graphics stuttering. I did a reinstall. It was fine, but knowing some grub might help in my recovery next time I fubar my whole system. I don't want to reinstall every time I screw up. A simpler fix is far preferred.
I learned from your video about having multiple bootable partitions. I never considered it. Having windows or some other Linux would be nice but for now I stick with one Linux right now.
I still have a lot to learn.
Quick solution, worked great for me. Thank you very much
So easy to understand really thank you very much ❤
Proper saving the day, mate. Thanks!!
Bro you're a life Saver! Thank you very much. Really you helped me a lot 💐💐💐💐
No problem, glad you found the video helpful!
Thank you. I had been putting this off. You made this easy.
Glad to hear it no problem
I got this problem today when I installed Mint on my desktop PC with three different drives. I previously had Debian installed on my larger SSD, but installed Mint on my smaller one. So I did that and formatted both my other large disks and mounted them, and GRUB freaked out sending me to rescue on boot. Managed to start it, but got tired of having to do it each time. The part I missed to do was the last one, grub-install, so thanks for that! Now everything works
Glad you got things fixed
Thanks man! This got me out of a bad situation.
Glad I could help! Think about subbing for more Linux and Programming content :D
hi after the grub rescue step when I type “insmod normal” i got this
error: symbol ‘grub_file_filters’ not found
And then nothing happens, any thoughts?
thanks man helped me.. better than reinstalling the whole OS
Glad it helped
I'm facing the problem while installing prime os (An Android os) first time via bootable usb flash drive...
What to do?
Kindly help me
set prefix=(hd0,gtp2)/boot/grub
set root=(hd0,gtp2)
insmod normal
normal
i demonstrated these steps for the wrong partition that belongs to windows. and windows got stuck in "preparing windows..." screen as i tried logging in. however i fixed the grub later. and windows seems like doing fine. do you think i damaged anything on this partition of windows by using these commands? (it did redirect me to freedos screen as i hit enter after all these 4 steps btw)
Thank you holy moly this saved me, I thought I had to install my Linux Mint again.
I'll never understand why developers don't just document their own work. Thank you very much.
Hello, this is the best guide for this problem so far!! Mega Super explained in the terminal. Nothing found in German yet. English is important, especially for Linux. Ok, as a Winjunky I will have to do more Linux, too much comfort makes you dependent! The future belongs to Linux for everyone who wants it!! Thanks for the input, greetings from Western Germany Loddar near Nato Airfiled Ramstein
Glad you enjoyed the vid!
I want to cry 😢. you saved my life's work. I had EVERYTHING on this ubuntu machine that was kept away for a year cuz I used my work laptop and had no use for mine. took it out tonight to revise my old work and lo and behold, did not load to Ubuntu, rather a grub that I've never seen before and the least bit familiar. went through 4 videos which were garbage without explanations about why they were running the commands they were. your video helped. I cannot thank you enough. 🙇♀️
I’m happy to hear you were able to recover :) and that the video helped!
It's nice you got your system fixed! I store things in the cloud that are important to me but yeah that costs money. Of course something could happen to backup media at home such as theft, failure of device, or fire. I have one VM I store in the cloud that has an application I wrote and want to use.
Having good disaster recovery is important for people like us that love our computer more than almost anything! 👍
bahahah, im here AGAIN!! why does this keep happening to me! ALWAYS come to this video for the rescue!
You are a life saver. Thank you so much!!
You're welcome!
It was a great help! thanks for the video!
You're welcome!
Thank you so much! This was brilliant!
No problem.
Very helpful! Thank you.
Thank you for the Help, you just earned another sub!! 🥰
Glad to have you following
People seem to love you for this video, and rightly so. TIL: Making simple-to-understand videos about how to recover with grub is the way to build a cult following. 😆
Haha. I’m glad there’s people being helped out by this still
Thank you very much!!!
This video safe more time for me!!!
Fantastic worked so well thank you very much 👍
This video helped me to come out from grub , thank you 😊
Glad things worked out
@SavvyNik
After i do > insmod normal
It says '/boot/grub/x86_64-efi/normal.mod' not found
@Savy
Thanks a lot man, It really saved my day!
Glad to hear that!
Thx mate helps A LOT!!!!
So I followed your steps and typed “normal” and hit Enter. Instead of booting, I got the error “can’t read CTR while initializing 18042”. Then after that went away, I got a “failed to start Network Name Resolution.” And Ubuntu still won’t start. Any suggestions what to do next?
May I ask you a question... When trying to make a USB live with ubuntu or lubuntu, the mbr from my computer send me to the grub from the usb with ubuntu, so when I dont have my usb with the os, it appears on the screen the problem you are trying to solve. So... how may I proceed with this issue?
I followed along but after typing "normal" nothing is happening
Is it because before doing this fix I was trying to get out of the GNU Grub 2.0 so I accidently chose the residual boot file as my boot file of my previously installed windows OS?
Thank you so much! This saved my computer.
You're welcome! Glad it helped.
You saved my life buddy love you so much
Thank you this, it has really helped me
Many thanks for the video will try tomorrow as I have struggled all day trying to fix this 2 new installs win10 and Linux Mint on 2 sata hdd’s worked straight away. Then that dreaded grub appeared spent hours just trying to fix it. Trying to learn Linux not to familiar with Windows either too old memory not as good as it used to be your vid will hopefully solve the problem, thanks again for an excellent presentation.
No problem, good luck
God damn after doing this for a whole day researching you helped thank you !
You're welcome
Saved my day. Much appriciated, thnx
You're welcome! Glad you liked it.
Thank you my friend, you helped me!
Help me. I did all of that but as soon as I do that second to last part (insmod normal) and hit enter it gives me the same error message in the beginning
You're genius man!
Worked nice one🎉
Hey savynick, please tell me what to do if it says , failure reading sector 0x2 on fd0, after ls (fd0)/. Please tell me.
THANK YOU !!!!! This was perfect. I added URL to my source list and it asked me if I wanted to update a file or leave it as default, I said yes thinking it was leaving it as default. TWO DAYS LATER >>>
I m running Kali-Linux on my Windows Laptop, on the D drive partitioned with ParrotOS and also storage from Windows on the D-Drive.
Use G-Parted to back up your image to a spare external HDD.
Glad it helped!
When I reboot I still get the grub error, but if I change the booting order in the bios to ParrotOS, then it will load its own GRUB boot loader and I then can see my Kali image there, I can click on it and I can get into Kali from ParrotOS grub. I'm afraid to uninstall grub in case it does something to ParrotOS.
I will load to ParrotOS boot screen with the options, then I will pick Kali, two more steps but I can work it.
thanks you so much for the tutorial
Thanks a lot.. brother for making a wonderful video.
You are most welcome
Thanks man you just saved me.
Great video. Thank You.
When I type normal it just erases everything before and gives me a line to type my command. When I type boot it says I need to load kernel first
Thank you, thank you, thank you!! You’re a genius Sir!!🙏

i cant use this method sir

As a not so savvy man, running multiple OS side by side, fwsetup saved my life.
Con u help me... When I typed "set root=(mypartition)" is shows command failed.. steps before it had no issues....
It works..thanks a lot
Thanks
It works for me
I'm trying to load from my live-usb the Ubuntu. I've got GNU GRUB version 2.06. How I can do it? I'm find it difficult through this tutorial...
I found the only partition that has the linux I downloaded but when I enter: ls (hd1,gpt2)/home/ I get a error message saying file home/ not found
Thanks, It helped me a lot
You're welcome.
Ahh perfect, thanks I knew rescue, but not how to fix
Bit by bit all steps are followed, even untill 'sudo reboot', but again, after rebooting, the issue remains intact as it was... Please help me fix it for good...
