  • By request. First, Paul's new project, Dave's speeding story, and an apology from Barbara Gaines. Then on to Viewer Mail, featuring Dave's publication covers; Tommy Casabona and ants; a Wheel of Fortune puzzle, with Darcy Hettrich, Brian McAloon and Sandra Furton; and Paul's "Avalanche Song," which he credits to writer David Yazbek.

Looking back on this, I realize that his experience telling the weather informed his sense of how to tell a story - the beats are perfect, and hilarious. Genuinely. Genius. Inspired. Singular.

I think this viewer mail bit comprises 75% of my pre-CZcams memory of Late Night. I also just subscribed to your Patreon.

At long last! One of my top five favorite Dave moments, Paul's 'Avalanche!' song! And there's no way that SNL could top this Wheel of Fortune send up, which they tried to do 29 years later. Nothing beats the real thing. Thanks again, Don!

You really saw how he coached Bill Murray in his Nick the Lounge Singer performances on SNL back in the day. Dave hardly ever walked over like that to shake his hand mid-show.

That's a 100% legitimate Avengers comic book with David Letterman. Published during what was Assistant Editors' Month.

I'm a bit late to this clip but does anyone recognize the drummer? Doesn't look at all like Anton and it's certainly NOT Steve Jordan.

@@dongiller I just googled him and yup, it's Allan Schwartzberg alright. He was a bigtime session and live drummer, and had lots of endorsements and I remember him being in damn near every copy of Modern Drummer magazine from the early 80s/late 70s. I saw his name rather recently looking up the musicians used on "Taxi", and he was one of the drummers.
