This is why German engineering firms are so superior to everyone else. In Germany, a hydraulic cylinder factory, to give an example, simply tries to be the best hydraulic cylinder factory they can. A nail factory tries to be the best nail factory they can, and so on. GmbH ownership laws prevent aggressive takeovers by Americans.
In England however, companies exist purely to grow. Once they have grown enough, they either look to buy out other companies, expand their repertoire (so our nail factory starts making hydraulic cylinders), or get bought out by ultra-rich Americans. Once the Americans get hold of the company, all sense of quality is lost, its just a race to the bottom and all heritage the company owns is lost.
As an example (not engineering related) take the former English chocolate giant Cadburys. Established 1824. One of their most famous products is the 'Creme Egg', and it was made using their premium chocolate they call 'Dairy Milk'.
They allowed themselves (as the British government offers no protection for companies against hostile Americans) to be taken over by the Americans, and after firing thousands of English workers to move the jobs to America for 'efficiency' savings, they also changed to bog standard chocolate in the Creme Eggs.
