CBS Radio MYSTERY THEATRE is a radio drama series created and directed by Himan Brown that was broadcast on CBS Radio Network affiliates from 1974 to 1982. Later in the early 2000s the show was repeated by the NPR satellite feed.
The format was similar to that of classic old time radio shows like The Mysterious Traveler and The Whistler, in that the episodes were introduced by host E. G. Marshall who provided pithy wisdom and commentary throughout. Unlike the hosts of those earlier programs, Marshall is fully mortal, merely someone whose heightened insight and erudition plunge the listener into the world of the macabre.
CBS Radio MYSTERY THEATRE was broadcast each weeknight, at first with a new program each night. Later in the run, three or four episodes were new originals each week, and the remainder repeats. There were 1,399 original episodes.

To all of us subscribers 😊 what does it tell you about the society we live in at this very moment ? Here, we are in 2023 listening to these radio shows it means we have all had enough of what we see in the movies of nowadays & on TV we all just want a peaceful life a much simpler life & not so much noise we hear on that box that screams at us when we switch it on , the loudness of those commercials the loud music that drives us crazy & the hatred & violence we see on the box we switch on , maybe life was much nicer when we knew less about the things we know now. I was a little child when TV came out so I remember that nice music that we heard on the shows like FATHER KNOW THE BEST or THE MICKEY MOUSE CLUB so when I hear that loudness of TV now days I turn it off or turn it down , these radio stories are relaxing & I listen to when I am in bed ready to relax away the day 🫠🥱just nice to listen to 😊just lovely😊
I'm with you my brother all I listen most of my days Is just radio broadcasting I look at tv on Saturdays only.
No I like a little of everything, TV is under your control in what you watch and the things that you see don't catch your fancy then change it or ask for something that's a little wholesome but the shows in the past or no different from whats on TV today is just not in your face, it's dressed better.
I don't have a tv anymore.

Oh man I remember laying on my grandma's bed facing her stand up radio with cousins and my brothers. You never heard a peep out of us. She knew how to keep us quiet. Only the Shadow knows. Man I'm 69 now. Great memories.

I have the same memories i would lay on the bed with my grandma early morning. She would put on the local radio station and back then it was for lack of a better word naive or pure.
I realized the other day that I have strongly retained that habit. It was a comforting realization. I guess we never really die. Our ripples live forever.
My grandparents had one, too. It had a record player that played the smaller sized records. I forgot what they're called..(45's? 37's?)
Im 56. I miss them more all the time. They lived 4mi away so I only got to see them a few times per yr.
Anyway, Id listen to this at my bedtime bc thats when it came on in the PNW. I didn't have permission to stay up later, so Id hide myself & transister radio under the covers & have the vol way down. Thats probably why I never protested bedtime. Well..except when "All in the Family" or "Welcome back Kotter" was on.
We used to vacation in Florida every year when I was a kid. Remember listening to this on the road, and every night at my aunt's house ❤❤!
Old radio plays. I had a tiny transistor radio and I was about 10. I shared a king size water bed with my sister. I'd lay on the water bed and listen to this on my transistor on the weekends. It came on at 10pm and was actually scary. I had to stop listening to it lol

My sister and I would listen to this as quietly as possible on the radio late at night when we were supposed to be asleep.
TV was not needed, Your imagination while listening was all you needed !

I remember listening to these in the mid 70s,when I was a teenager.
I’d go to my Nana’s to stay overnight about once a month on a Saturday.
I brought my trusty
radio/cassette player recorder,just about everywhere with me. I’d listen to these shows on said radio.
Used to listen to this at night in Okinawa on Armed Services Radio in 1977. Brings back a lot of memories.
My dad and I would listen to these on our late night drives home. He was born in 1941…would have been 83 this year. He loved The Shadow…and hearing these and “only The Shadow knows” brings a comfort to me that I haven’t felt in a really long time. thank you 🙏

Many nights probably truth be known, nearly every night, i would fall to sleep to this playing on my 1970s clock radio. Fond memories of calmer, simpler days.

I was about 10 when my grandpa told me in great detail about H. G. Well and "The war of the worlds." I, was blown away..angry that such a big part of entertainment was denied to me. Well, as luck would have it, The one and only Hyman Brown managed to get the funding for The CBS Radio Mystery Theater and the "Grand Lady" of Radio was in episode 1- "The old ones are hard to kill"..and it kind of served as a " remember when" moment to many who remembered and a teaser to the generation that, like myself, listened..and I mean REALLY LISTENED! So, here I am at 68..laying in bed and saying " Thank you" to E.G. Marshall and Co.
My parents were born in 1929 and shared classic movies and old time radio shows with my brother and I when we were growing up. We loved them! This makes me think about my dad.
I love these programs. Remind me of my youth. When I would turn down the lights, sit by our faithful Zenith radio, and listen intently. Jumping at every scream 😱
Very poor in my early years but I had a radio. This was huge .
It was radio theater that inspired me to get into broadcasting as a career. I never got to be in a radio drama because as my Program Director told me many years ago, "you were born about 20 years too late". The genre all but died in the 60s and my career began in '81. But I still loved CBS Radio Mystery Theater. I used to listen to it when I was a teenager back in the 70s. Then adulthood happened and decades passed & I hadn't heard it again until the internet became a reality & I found a website that played CBS RMT in the early 2000s & I rediscovered why I fell in love with radio from the beginning. Still great radio after all these years. My old Program Director was right. I was born 20 years too late. If I had been born in the 40s instead of the 60s I might have had a very different career. Well, it's fun to think about anyway. I'm still in the business that I began at 19. I've been a disc jockey. A news anchor, airborne traffic reporter and even did a stint in TV in the 90s. I even worked for CBS Radio in the early 2000s. Now I'm 60 and I've had a wonderful 40 years of memories and experiences. I don't know how much longer I'll be in this line of work. Hopefully a few more years as it's the only thing I know how to do and I'm not old enough or rich enough to retire. Lol. Radio has changed so much since the days of vinyl and reel-to-reel tapes. I've witnessed the evolution from analog to digital and I owe it all to first, God and also to my fondness for and inspiration from the old radio comedies, dramas and thrillers from the 40s, 50s and 60s. An influence that continues to this day. Long live CBS Radio Mystery Theater.

I'm 47 and some of my greatest memories are sitting with my dad in his vw bug in the dark , most times in our driveway, listening to these. Makes him seem so much closer now that he's gone.
Loved listening to these as a kid.

❤❤❤Just have to say the CBS RADIO MYSTERY THEATRE will always be “Number one” to me. Was fist introduced to these wonderful tales in school around 1979-80 by our best Teacher. So at that time they broadcast around 10 pm Sunday nights. The only time I actually wanted radio on instead of tv in my room to lull me to sleep. Maybe that was the beginning of insomnia lol. In any case they are easily the original Kings and Queens of radio broadcasting. If you haven’t tried it honestly worth a try. They have cast members and some got their Hollywood start with these. Some are hilarious but main focus thriller and horror. Definitely ahead of the times. Even the captivating Mr. Vincent Price is in several. By all accounts he truly Found his mark from radio to theatre to movies. Give it a whirl - nothing to loose especially when evacuated for two plus weeks. Shut lights off and let your imagination be your screen. Hopefully you find one to meet your needs. HAVE FUN ✨not a paid ad just my opinion 🌺
I have a very boring data entry job and I've been looking for something to listen to at work besides podcasts, most of which I find annoying. These CBS Radio stories are the freaking jackpot. It's like I won the lottery. I can't listen to regular audiobooks now because I love hearing the dialogue voice acted in these stories. It makes a huge difference. I wish someone was doing stuff like this today, I mean quality stuff, not the poorly written crap that is being submitted to podcasts and Reddit.

I loved those old radio shows. It's so sad that they are a thing of the past. I still get a thrill hearing the creaking door opening! My mom would record CBSMT on our tape recorder and play them in our car on long road trips. It didn't matter if we'd heard the episodes before. We could listen over and over. I'm so happy to listen to these radio shows once again. Thank you!
Born in the 90s this is more creative, you get to paint your own picture of the story in your head. Why can't stuff like radio shows of this Era be appreciated these days. I would rather read or listen to this than listen to a podcast or movie.

Along with reading my Pippi Longstocking books that I got from the bookmobile, this was my favorite pastime as a kid. Hiding under the covers with my transistor radio & being swept away with such story telling. So..maybe ppl just don't know this exists. 💁♀️.

I used to listen to this late at night in my early teens. I had a small transistor radio and would pick up a station late a night from Sacramento. I'm from Eastern Oregon but now live in Sacramento.

I actually find that the young people I know are quite imaginative. Drawing their own worlds and making up the most creative stories.
It’s the older people I know in their 60s that find it hard to listen to stories without pictures and think books are relics of the past. Except when it comes to shaming kids for not reading.
They’re are the ones who find listening to radio programs and the black and white shows are cool. The older generation think it’s weird as they complain about the younger generation being _____ (fill in the blank).
If you think kids don’t have imagination, you probably haven’t given any a chance. You’re missing out on A LOT of fun.
I’ve heard a lot of complaints about kids that are obviously untrue, but having a lack of imagination is a new one.

This show was the bane of my youth. Night after night I would lie in bed listening, fascinated with the mystery, and then... Bam! It would be morning and I'd realize I had once again dozed off just before the big reveal/twist/climax, and another day would begin with the awareness that since I knew noone else who listened to the show, I had zero hope of finding out what had happened in the program's final moments!
The biggest unsolved mystery was: why I never set up a recording device or just stopped listening.
(Though one probable answer is that clearly CBSMT helped me to regularly get a full night's sleep!)

I grew up in Rockford Illinois and this was the late night radio show I fell asleep to...on Chicago radio wbbm I believe....I have the Golden age of radio app highly recommend that as well...these were produced in the '70's as a revival in radio dramas

We’d listen as we closed the local Mexican fast food restaurant in the late 70’s early 80’s We each had a job to do and listened while we did them! Oh and the place we worked, was haunted! Truly added to the fun of listening! My favorite!!

I have the complete series (1399 episodes) loaded onto an old iPod.....I have serious tinnitus and putting in ear phones at bedtime, I drift off to sleep with an episode and it masks the ringing in my ears.

My uncle, Joseph Cochran wrote for Mystery Theater, do you have any of his plays. He also said he would telegraph plays for Actor, Ronald Reagan (as Former President ) 1940-50s). was only 8, 9 or 10, now 80 yrs old. He wrote for the Shadow and Lux Radio Theater, too.

I thought “oh man if I could have done this when it was a popular thing to do!” But I’ve been listening to NoSleep Radio by The Dark Somnium here on YT and… it’s the same thing. Different genre, but the same thing and I’ve been doing listening for years. Glad to have a different genre!! 🥰

I found these by accident what a joy. Is as if I am in the room when I put on full screen. And then my imagination goes to a peaceful place.
It is a lost art how they are able to bring you into the story as if we are a part of it.
