I have old plastic measuring spoons (especially the 1/4 tsp and 1/2 tsp and 1 TBS for scooping soil) to help me with tiny areas (digging and adding soil or poking for room) Love Love Love what you do with succulents...got me hooked and found them to be marvelous gifts! Many thanks!!

+PintaseSarapintas You are so sweet! Thank you! I love orchids as well! I have an orchid that has been in bloom since April of 2015!!! It shot up two spikes and has been pushing new blooms off of those two spikes ever since! At one time it had 23 blooms! Got a hold of a good one! ;) ~Laura

I like the idea of using a large syringe like that for watering. That is an excellent idea I never would have thought of, one of the best tips I've gotten from a plant info show...brilliant idea, yet so simple! Thanks for such a great tip!

ah....This looks amazing! My go to tool are chopsticks!! they help me tremendously in cramped areas. I had used skewers but after peircing a plant (sad face) I stopped using skewers so with chopsticks you have length and two size ends to help you!! It's perfect....:)

I use a pen old pastry brush to remove dirt and debris. I also have a 14” long pair of blunt (rounded end) tweezers that really help to position teeny tiny plants.

I'm enjoying your videos. Your personality just shines! Like Jules, I also use chop sticks when planting in cramped quarters. They're awesome. Plus, if you are adept with using them, they work well to lightly grip a plant when placing (especially near thorns), and to gently tamp the potting mix to help secure plants :)

does the hot glue gun harm the plant once its time to remove them? or is it more of a permanent thing? any other tip about the glue gun use. thanks
No the hot glue does not hurt them, their roots will grow around them and then when your ready to reuse the succulent you just gently pull off the succulent and repot it. Hope this helps 🌺

I have a question although... I have created my own terrariums but some of them started to have mildew in the soil, around the glass container, and on top of the soil... Did I plant the wrong way? How can I get rid of mildew?

Can I ask is there areas on that you added moss to the outside of the plastic sheet rather than on the inside with the soil. Thanks Janine succulents is all new to me so I just wanted to find out as much as I can if I see something I haven't seen before
+Janine Bradford I put the moss on the outside to disguise the plastic! So, I've got a layer of moss, then the plastic, then soil for planting! Moss is purely for aesthetics!

Thank you for sharing another master piece! I enjoy them SO much and it makes me want to run to my succulent planters and do I'm-not-exactly-sure-what to them. Gotta say that ever since I started watching your videos I've been practicing and learning, mainly the hard way; I've learned that overwatering is not a myth or that if I create a planter in an urn with just one panel for access I shouldn't plant a tall cactus right in front of the door. But, again, thank you for turning me into this beautiful art.
So, questions ... where did you get your syringe? They seem to be regulated and hard to get.
Also, the humidity meter ... there's a bunch and was wondering, in your experience, is there one better than others?

I just received a diamond shape terrarium with succulents, a Cactus and air plants glued down only how can I water them and how often?
Hi Laura, you have me hooked on succulents. My daughter is getting married in August and we bought 14 terrariums. Initially I used s moss ball cut in half (I got the idea from your hanging moss ball video). Now that i have seen this video I'm wondering if this is better. My question is, if i plant them now, end of May, will they be ok in August or should i wait closer to the time? My problem is my succulents are not as big as yours so if i plant them now will they grow a bit? I'm not using driftwood. Your advice would be appreciated. You are awesome😍
I live in Idaho. Do you think this is something I should do for my succulents this winter? I want to keep them all together and warm. Would this work?

Laura your work is truly inspirational! I am so fascinated by succulents at the moment and your videos have helped answer so many questions! I am in Northern Michigan and we get very little sunshine during the winter months. Do you think I would have issues with succulents if put them directly in a south facing window? At any rate I am a huge fan and will be using you as my guide when it warms up here and I'm able to get my hands on some of those beautiful succulents you are using. (It's -20* here today so even with a heat pack I wouldn't want to chance a shipment!) 😊

Hello, I have made a few succulent terrariums. I am noticing a problem with gnats. I have been put a small bowl with apple cider vinegar with a few drops of Dawn dish soap. I set the bowl next to the terrariums but only a few gnats get trapped. Is there something more effective I can use. Oh, I used new organic cactus soil and a syringe to water.
+Aravensdream Gnats can be a huge pain! It would really help to either get a spray or disassemble the terrarium and replace the dirt with fresh and be really diligent about moisture control. If you would rather trap them, the best trap I've ever made is by grabbing some sort of container (I used a shallow tupperware container), place a banana peel in it, cover with plastic wrap and secure tightly around the opening with a rubberband, then punch holes through the saran wrap with a toothpick or skewer. The gnats fly in for the banana peel and can't get back out. Works like a charm. I always keep one of those traps in my worm composter just in case. :) ~Laura
If using a moisture meter for a non-draining container, at what reading do you water?
+Shannon McCosky I like it to read almost as low as the meter will go- mine is a 1. When I water, I give a minimal amount of water as well- just barely enough to moisten the root balls.

+Michael Maltese Not necessarily. This terrarium doesn't have drainage, which isn't ideal, but it does have an open top which helps moisture escape. I think that's the only way succs would survive in a container like this- lots of air flow! I have lots of potted succulents (in regular pots) that do great inside. ~Laura

May I ask about the actual step of planting an individual succulent? From videos I've seen, (not just yours) it doesn't appear as if the roots are planted with as much care as a non succulent plant. I've seen some videos where it the plant were simply placed on top of the soil. Do succulents root quicker than other type of plants? I love your videos and thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!!! :)
+wBryang Succulents are awesome because they produce roots quickly-they can actually survive without roots for quite awhile. When re-rooting succulents you cut the entire stem or rosette off, let the end callous for a few days, then push it down into the soil where it will form new roots in a month or two. I think that's why we aren't as careful with them because we know they'll just make more roots! :) Thanks for the comment! ~Laura

It will depend on how big your terrarium is and what type of succulents you put in. Sempervivums and Sedums seem to be less expensive than some of the others. This was a fairly large terrarium, so I bet (and I'm guessing here..I didn't add it up) this one cost about $40-$50 to fill with succulents. Hope that helps!

Have you tried your local garden centre? if not then an Ikea should have a small selection of some (this is relative to where you live) Online shops are usually a good choice because they provide both the variety name as well as some care instructions. She gets hers from her garden centre that she works at!

Hot glue won't kill roots on plants
the ones that you hot glued are fake succulents?
Or you just added them for the time?
+Miguel Camarena they are real. The glue helps them stay in place because they are cuttings and don't have roots yet
you water the moss around it. The stem of the plant then notices this moisture and produces roots that later on grows in to the moss.
love this.. next time you go out to chinese grab an extra pair of chopsticks to use instead of the scissors :)
