Excuse me while I write an essay. This essay is fairly applicable to any gen hope/sameer/other dhar mann clone, but I'm writing it here because this premise is so hilariously trashy. Perhaps you've heard of Jerry Springer, perhaps not. If you are in the overlap between YMS and RLM, then their "Our Least Viewed Episode Ever" video will give you some insight to what Jerry Springer's show was like. I've noticed that these Dhar Mann clones often end up in similar topical territory to Jerry Springer, Maury, Steve Wilkos, and other such shows. Before them, there was The Gong Show and its various imitations. Sure there's differences among these examples, but generally they all scratch the same itch in our cultural consciousness. But there's even more at play here. Quick and dirty version: Greek theatre was cultured and respectful, Roman theatre became trashy and low-brow, Holy Roman Empire outlawed theatre because it was So Sinful. Theatre re-emerged in the form of passion plays and morality plays held within churches, sometimes during mass. Over time, these too became trashy and low-brow and increasingly distanced from the church. This cycle repeats and repeats. Shakespeare was rather low-brow for his time, as you may have heard. This very broad trajectory in which every era develops its own brand of trashy entertainment occurs regularly throughout the history of Western/European entertainment. Now, I realize I'm only covering Western/European traditions, and it's because those are the traditions I've studied. I don't want to speak on topics I'm uninformed about. I should also clarify that I'm NOT saying "all entertainment trends toward trashiness over time." That's not true and I'm not saying that it is. Rather, I'm bemusedly observing that it's a niche that gets filled over and over again despite efforts to eradicate it. We're here, watching these videos of Adum, because we derive entertainment from his criticism of how trashy the videos are. It's safe to say that if we're watching this reaction video, then we similarly look down upon the genre of videos being reacted to. We're allowed to, there's nothing wrong with it. I just think it's fascinating and important to keep in mind that this niche has always and will always exist. To summarize my thesis: if the history of human entertainment is carcinisation, then stuff like "man in wheelchair gets pushed down stairs" is the crab.
