      The FDNY guys seem exceptionally chill to have some CZcamsrs video them at fairly close range. I expect it's an earned respect thing...they stay out of the way, let the firefighters do their jobs, and in return the FDNY is okay with those who have proven that they can be trusted on those scenes. Wouldn't surprise me if some of these channels are run by ex-FDNY or relatives of FDNY because they treat the firefighters with tremendous respect on scenes.

    We had a transformer ‘issue’ in a basement here in Tasmania a few years back. It was jury-rigged back into service but kept causing power spikes. About 10 day later it caused the ancient wiring in one of our oldest department stores to burn it down. Was quite ‘impressive’ with flames higher than nearby buildings 12 stories higher. A guy who owned a Sony shop opposite made an excellent film with their latest and greatest camera.

      I work at a big power plant and our sister plant had a transformer fire, it melted the 6inch steel cables 150 feet above it. Our fire brigades are made of 4 members. It was put out quickly but it was only the 150 gallon spill over oil reservoir not the 20000 gallon main oil tank.
      Seeing 500 gallons of diesel on fire is a scary thing, I couldn't imagine 20000 gallons of something more flammable.

    What is the purpose of a rebreather for a firefighter? I understand why the military uses a closed circuit. No gasses to expel (no bubbles) means no hand grenades get thrown into the water when those bubbles reach the surface and are visible to the enemy. Photographers also have a legitimate claim on the technology because bubbles aren’t desirable in a lot of underwater photography (the bubbles might scare fish and obscure the subject of photograph. But why firefighters?

      @windycurrent Před rokem +4

      I use Draeger rebreathers for tunnel rescue and have been a tunnel rescue specialist for about 14 years now.
      Rebreathers are a special breathing system where you exhaled air is scrubbed using soda Lyme. There is a small oxygen cylinder inside the pack as well (not an air bottle) and cooling ice to keep your breathing air from getting hot and burning you. Every so many breaths the system squirts oxygen into the system so your body receives the appropriate level of oxygen. On average with moderate work exertion you get 1 hour and 20 minutes to one hour fourth five minutes of breathing time before you need to be out of the danger area. Hope this helps you understand.

    • @HayK47
      @HayK47 Před rokem +5

      No, setting up rebreathers does not save time. They have to load blocks of ice in the packs to cool the exhaled breath. They are used for special situations like this where the firefighters are going to be an IDLH atmosphere for long periods and won’t have the opportunity to swap bottles. For high rise ops, they use their regular SCBAs.

      Well, no. It uses a carbon dioxide absorbing material to ‘scrub’ the CO2, leaving the oxygen depleted air ( you exhale about 16% oxygen). The oxygen tank then makes that back up to 21% to match air.
