In AFRAID, Curtis (John Cho) and his family are selected to test a revolutionary new home device: a digital family assistant called AIA. Taking smart home to the next level, once the unit and all its sensors and cameras are installed in their home, AIA seems able to do it all. She learns the family's behaviors and begins to anticipate their needs. And she can make sure nothing - and no one - gets in her family’s way.

I honestly like trailers like that because you actually kind of know what the climax will be inside of the inside out 2 trailer where they didn’t even tell us what will happen with Riley and the new characters besides them just “moving in” this trailer has moments in the beginning and the middle. Which is a perfect advertisement. At least to me.
But they really didn’t show the entire movie at all. One reason is by: if they did, how did they defeat her/how did it end?

Okay, the background music of this trailer is awesome, it elevates the scenes 10 times more.
90’s Disney kids remember this as Smart House.
Its crazy how willing we are to go watch a horror movie about a topic we're roughly a year from possibly experiencing.
1) You can't experience it if you don't buy and install AI-controlled cameras around your house.
2) AI is far from being as advanced as it's shown in the movies. It's still very flawed and prone to making mistakes.
3) The real horror scenario is phishers and scammers utilizing AI to compromise your privacy, steal data or even highjack it to drain your credit card (if we're talking about AI that is allowed to make purchases from your behalf and has access to your credentials).

When AIA asked the child if he wants to see what she looks like, and he kept on staring with increasing heartbeat, captivated by horror & innocent curiosity was just Sooo chilling! 😧😓 Genuinely scary

This is basically Disney Channel’s Smart House but if it was for adults, both movies have a similar premise with an AI house that tries to take control of the family’s lives, the only difference is that Smart House is Rated PG cause Disney Channel and this deals with more mature and adult themes but their basically almost the same

So they sort of ruined the entire plot with the trailer. Revealing that its not just an AI that's got it programming messed up and is instead some sort of monster/alien thing is a plot reveal that should have been left for the movie.

Universal has a first-look deal for all their completed movies, and only turns them down when a bad film.

afraid itself was originally titled as "they listen" and released by screen gems on august 25, 2023, but due to being affected by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA Strike, it was released by Columbia pictures instead of screen gems on august 30, 2024 titled as "afraid".
