Finally a CZcams video about the Netherlands and its not the 10000th video about Amsterdam.
    Fun fact about Eindhoven:
The original city was what basically was the center of the city now and all the different district were separate villages.
Eindhoven was the biggest and during the industrial boom in the period 1900-1920 it expanded so much it "annexed" the other villages and became (till today the 5th largest city in the Netherlands) pretty much overnight.
The original villages still live on in the name of the different districts in the city (Strijp, Woensel, Gestel, Tonglere, Stratum)
Later also small parts of surrounding villages like Geldrop and Veldhoven were added but they mostly remain independent towns.
In the 90s there was debate to also add the neigbouring town Nuenen but residents from Nuenen were heavily against it and campaigned for years to prevent this (my grandparents lived in Nuenen at the time and I can still vividly remember the campaign posters all over Nuenen back then)
Eindhoven was next to Rotterdam probably the city that was hit the hardest during WW2 as pretty much the entire city was destroyed by bombings and a huge fire afterwards
Thats why a lot of buildings and homes are post war because there wasn't much left of the original city after the war.
Eindhoven was liberated on the 18th of September 1944 thanks to Operation Market Garden.
    Yes THAT Operation Market Garden.
The one the Allies were able to free the lower half of our country but suffered a defeat at Arnhem, meaning that the upper half of our country was still occupied through the Winter and was pretty much cut of from any help because of German occupation. (This is best told in the incredible 1977 movie 'One bridge to far" that was for a large part filmed in the Netherlands and also quite a bit in Eindhoven, incredible warmovie with some A list stars like Sean Connery, Michael Caine, Anthony Hopkins, Robert Redford among many many others and several Dutch actors... And imo is next to Saving Private Ryan one if the must see WW2 warmovies)
The defeat of the Allies at Arnhem caused what we call the Hongerwinter (hunger winter) and sadly caused many deaths by starvation.
To celebrate the liberation of Eindhoven, every year the city is holding an event callled the Lichtjesroute (Route of light) and today its a route around 22 km long.
It started back in 1947 and back then it was a few streets of festive lights but over the decades it expanded into the 22 km long route through the entire city.
During this event entire streets, houses, buildings and parks are decorated in all sort of themed lights (from the smurfs and other cartoon characters, old fashioned festival decoration to abstract themes) and its quite a treat for the eye.
You can bicycle the route although most people drive it as its a long route.
It starts at 18th September every year and last until the second sunday of October.
The lights go on at 20:00 and go of at 00:00
Every year its set up by thousands of volunteers and professionals and it consists of over 100000 light ornaments all over the city.
I highly recommend you guys visit our city next year around those times to experience it.
Sorry it was a long text but as an Eindhovenaar its very refreshing to see some love to our city from people abroad.
Most go to Amsterdam and think thats what the Netherlands is.
    Is not.. far from it
I also recommend you guys visit cities like Nijmegen, Maastricht, Den Bosch, Groningen etc etc.
As our beatiful country has so many amazing places that aren't that well known to people not from the Netherlands.
Welcome to our country and especially welcome to Eindhoven.
    Awesome video.

I grew up in Eindhoven, then moved to Utrecht for my studies and lived in that area for 40 years. But I met my friends from primary and secondary school every year for Glow, we go to our favourite Irish pub in the city centre for diner (where in 40 years time nothing has changed but the guilder symbol on the menu has changed for the euro symbol) and then we walk the entire Glow route. It’s a yearly reunion that we all look out for …
I live close to Strijp-S and the clock building is right in front of my apartment. From the 11th floor I have a fabulous view of the city with light shows that go all year round on several buildings … I’m really glad I chose to go back to Eindhoven, it’s really a very “gezellige” city …

Stayed in Eindhoven the weekend of September 15th this year as I had tickets to Ayreon in Tilburg, the progressive/symphonic metal project featuring a who’s who in that genre of music led by Dutch musician Arjen Lucassen. A lot who attended any of their shows that weekend stayed in Eindhoven as they traveled from all over the world, including the US. While in town, visited the Philips Museum and Philips Stadion, even took in a PSV game which featured two USMNT players.

Some tips for when you revisit Eindhoven:
    - At Strijp-S you can also find Intelligentia ICE. They have some of the best ice cream you can find.
    - There are 4 breweries you can visit: 100 Watt, Van Moll, Het Veem and Rabauw. The first two in the city centre, the last two in Strijp-S
    - For cocktails with a view try SkyBar Vane
    - next to Strijp-S you’ll find Monk, the oldest bouldergym in the Netherlands

Eindhoven is a nice example of how resilience a city can be. Philips downgraded, but the split off companies are nowadays the most high tech in the world ( Eindhoven, the smartest square mile in the world according to ……) AMSL is a great example being in the middle of the battle between the states and China. But also Philips who is now completely focusing on the medical sector. There were the money can be made.

And Eindhoven has also the highest concentration of people on the high functioning end of the spectrum. Due to having ASML, Philps and the Tech University. Normaly its about 80 per X persons (I dont know if it was per 10.000 or 100.000) in Eindhoven it's 243 (if i rember correctly) per X persons.

    Good memories.
The difference between worstebroodjes and saucijzenbroodjes isn't just the bread, but also the sausage. Especially the seasoning.
I prefer them over saucijzenbroodjes because they tend to taste less fatty, and are cleaner to eat as well.

Finally worstenbrood! :o). Glad you had a good impression of Eindhoven, as it's one of those cities, you can make look good or bad, whichever you want. It doesn't have the historical buildings like other big cities in the Netherlands. Actually the center around the central train station has been bombed in WWII and was pretty much completely destroyed. The original village of Eindhoven was the part around the center. Nowadays Eindhoven consists of what used to be a number of villages besides Eindhoven itself, being Woensel, Tongelre, Stratum, Gestel and Strijp. You should know where this last one was/is :o). I don't think you mentioned the Dutch Design Week being held in Eindhoven. Design is a major part of Eindhoven, most certainly in relation to Strijp-S.

It is funny that the only Highway of significance in Zeeland, the A58, runs from Vlissingen to Eindhoven. Cause Philips also had a major lightbulb factory in Middelburg and therefore having a direct highway from Middelburg to Eindhoven was a win-win. Philips is now producing LED lights in that building in Middelburg, but has sadly reduced the workforce and automated a lot there.

But it has improved so much, and the way the Strijp area has developed is real amazing, a great way to pay tribute to the big role that the Philips company played in the development of the city and the area, and to the whole electronics industry. And on top of that the saucijzenbroodje vs worstenbroodje discussion is such a fun one, really all depends on taste and on where you grew up. I used to work at Strijp-S in building SAQ (which is still partially there and now houses a cinema). One of my offices is still standing, though I think it isn't part of the cinema. Philips used to have a number of complexes all over Eindhoven, but most of those have either been sold off or taken over by the companies that were split off. The last vestiges of Philips in Eindhoven are now concentrated at the High Tech Campus close to Aalst (the old W complex) near the A67/A2 highways in the South.

Both have their charme and value. Lichtjesroute is more "folksy" (in the most positive sense, don't get me wrong!) and commemorates the Liberation in Sep 1944 while Glow is more "artsy" and just is a sort of showcase of Eindhoven as design city (I probably don't do justice to that either). Personally I like Glow more for the installations, but Lichtjesroute for it's meaning. And Lichtjesroute definitely will you show you much more of the city, while Glow centers more on the centre. Either way: it's always amazing if Eindhoven gets some positive attention!

Eindhoven wasn't really much of a city until Philips in the early 1900's. Philips had houses build for the workers, he got a lot of piss poor people out of the then terribly poor Drenthe to work there, it created sports clubs, and until very recently children of Philips employees got a study allowance from Philips. It invented loads of stuff like the CD, DVD, the audio cassette and Video2000 but probably also Eindhoven as a relevant city.

If you want to go to another one of those old industrial complexes that has been repurposed, you should go just across the border into Germany. There are several old industrial parks and/or mining complexes over there that have been repurposed to parks or to art exibits.
There is a big one near Duisburg called "Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord". I believe there was also one near Dusseldorf, but I honestly can't quite remember, because it has been a while since I've been there(like 15-20 years). There should be several though, all throughout the ruhr valley.
If you are into art and old industry, that should be right up your alley.

In fact ASML started as a department of Philips in a tiny back-building on Strijp-T, next to Strijp-S. The activity became more successful, but Philips had to choose. They decided the activity would be bette off having their own dedicated management rather than staying part of the big Philips. That was the best bet, the 40 workers that took ASML from Philips and continued the activity were extra dedicated and focused, this focus alone let them to become better than other players in that market, better than Nikon and Canon. ASML moved a small distance to Veldhoven where there was room to expand. The 40 employees all became millionaire. This would for sure not have developed like this when ASML was not separated from Philips. I work at Philips, my wife works at ASML, both very happy in our jobs!
