There is a quote from Karrin in the book side jobs describing Dresden. Doesn't spoil and speaks to the dichotomy that he is.
"Watching Dresden operate was usually one of two things: mildly amusing or positively terrifying. On a scene, his whole personal manner always made me think of autistic kids. He never met anyone’s eyes for more than a flickering second. He moved with the sort of exaggerated caution of someone who was several sizes larger than normal, keeping his hands and arms in close to his body. He spoke a little bit softly, as if apologizing for the resonant baritone of his voice.
But when something caught his attention, he changed. His dark, intelligent eyes would glitter, and his gaze became something so intense that it could start a fire. During the situations that changed from investigation to desperate struggle, his whole being shifted in the same way. His stance widened, becoming more aggressive and confident, and his voice rose up to become a ringing trumpet that could have been clearly heard from opposite ends of a football stadium.
Quirky nerd, gone. Terrifying icon, present."

If the sexuality stuff bothers you, it does taper off somewhat as the series progresses. Some of it depends on whether or not certain characters are present, how it plays into the plot, and how Harry's focus and control.
    also potential SPOILERS:
The salon thing seems light and funny at first, but Thomas' struggles to not "eat" people is part of the series. It goes to some dark places eventually. The salon is his attempt to get fed without harming anyone and be a good guy. His struggle always makes me sad.

I think the thing that often gets overlooked as a source of success within the Dresden Files is that Butcher has clearly defined rules. The rules of Wizardry, the rules of the Fey, the rules of the Vampire Courts, etc. Those clearly defined rules allow Butcher to lay a firm foundation through rich character detail and growth.

There's a short story told from Murphy's perspective - I think it's in the Brief Cases short story collection - that basically tells you how the rest of the world sees Dresden. I believe he more or less 'winged' the first two, or at least had a much looser outline then, as they were written while he was still in college and a pretty junior author. You can definitely tell that book 3 is where he seemed to really sit down and plan the entire series out fully, as that's where a lot of the major plotlines and factions that would come into play later made their first appearances. He's said before in interviews that Bianca's party in that book has characters and plotlines begin there that we havn't even seen yet.

Literally just here to recommend Cris Wooding based off what i’ve seen you talk about liking, specifically Retribution Falls and The Ember Blade. Amazing characters and character relationships as well as solid world building within both. Retribution Falls and the second book The Black Lung Captain, in my opinion, has the greatest writing of a relationship. Check them out when you have space on your list.

When I watched a lot of your earlier reviews I, like many Dresden fans kept saying "stick with it you'll see" and I'm glad you did continue reading. I think the most common mistake is that people over emphasise the books as a gum-shoe detective homage (which is there, especially gender tropes) and underplay the urban fantasy epic which unfolds. Fool Moon, is IMO his worse book but once you've read enough of the series you realise that that book does some heavy set up for the larger arc so is still fundamentally essential. From memory Butcher spoke at a convention where he claimed that he has most of the books planned from the beginning and that he hasn't had to change much of his plotting yet - I haven't seen a reason to disbelieve him yet.

SPOILERS up to White Night! Have you started pulling at the strings of the deeper mysteries of the series like Cowl and Kumori's identities? Or the mentions of things that have happened off screen like the Red Court attack on Archangel where the Brute Squad was stationed (mentioned in Summer Knight) Or how everything seems to be connected to He Who Walks Behind (Dresden's mom shacked up with Lord Wraith, Lord Wraith had a ritual entropy spell that summoned HWWB... which it's implied in Blood Rites Lord Wraith used to snuff Dresden's mom with when she was giving birth to Harry and she neutered Wraith with her death curse and then Harry's mentor 'sent' HWWB to kill Harry after he runs away)... It's all kinds of fun, because Jim has stated he's a lazy writer. If he's mentioned something in the book it has significance.

I love this series as well. I agree it takes a bit to get rolling, although I enjoyed the first few books more then you did, but once you get into the characters it's more addictive then potato chips you just can't stop! The slow build of trust between Dresden and Murphy is great. I especially like how even as Butcher builds up Dresden's power; Dresden himself realizes how insignificant he is compared to the greater powers and conflicts that he discovers as his knowledge of the world grows. I have a hard time deciding who is my favorite character in the series but I definitely think Michael is the best written paladin/holy knight I've ever read.

Check out the Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch. A British series so not well known in the U.S., but it reminds me a bit of Dresden. It's a bit darker, but the biggest difference is that the protagonist starts out as something like the Murphy character in Dresden -- he's a young constable in the London police who gets slowly sucked into the world of magic and the supernatural. Going along on that journey is really fun.

In a similar vein you might want to check out (if you have not already) Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch and Fated by Benedict Jacka. Both are wizards in the modern world stories. Rivers is about the metropolitan police and their use of magic and Fated is more Dresdenish wizard with a dark past trying to make good. Both series have much to recommend them.

I've been reading the Dresden Files for the past 19 years... I started after the first 2 or 3 books had been published. I think your view on the books is pretty solid. There are some aspects I kind of thought maybe you would touch on - like his resisting temptations with Lashiel's shadow (Lash) and also, the development of the background plot that's slowly being revealed to us in terms of Cowl. But I think you have a lot of good reading ahead of you, and I can't wait for the next 2 books to come out - now that they've revealed Peace Talks and Battle Ground are coming out this year!
