As a Canadian who lives at the top of a mountain. Just put your hazards on and stay ON the road. People can go around you. Especially if it's not a busy road. Better than getting stuck. Also there is a couple self rescue vechicle recovery courses you could take just to make you feel more confident with recovery. But I get how scary it is to see all you possessions tilting at a scary angle in the middle of no where! Glad it worked out.

@@AllenZee I think that's just bitterness talking for some reason I don't understand. This car is her life and has all her belongings in it. It set her back in her timeline. Nobody likes getting stuck, especially in the middle of nowhere in freezing temperatures. To claim it's all just for clicks is really weird. Also, of course we like to watch a roadtrip that goes smoothly. I actually prefer it.
@@AllenZee I disagree, because in both cases, she went looking for help, who knocks on doors, if they have an alternative option that may not even work? Do you have an anchor in your vehicle? and it is easy to use huh?
Dear Eva, as a Canadian (living in Los Angeles) I am inclined to give you this info: when you apply the brake on snow or ice, you lose direction, totally. If you start sliding, DO NOT BRAKE, just steer as you release the accelerator. You can apply the brake a little and if it still slides release the brake and try to turn lightly. Also, sometime, if your car is at a relatively high speed and you start sliding (usualy on icy road), you need to counterintuitively full turn your wheels quickly in the direction it is sliding. This will make your car stay in line with the road while it will do a 360 degrees, avoiding the ditch (I did this extreme technique twice in my life and it worked well). But if you turn your wheel in the opposite direction at higher speed (it is a natural reflex), you will hit the ditch or whatever obstacle is on that side you are trying to avoid. In your case, you were driving slowly so this technique does not apply. You can practice these techniques in an empty parking. Also, at each beginning of a travel or if the condition changes when you travel, you need to test how the car reacts when you break, and at different levels of braking. But sometime, you slide in the ditch no matter what you do. But I suspect you did not pay attention for a second and you went too far on the side of the road, then you braked and lost direction, making the car go in the ditch. And for the return.... bon voyage! You are right, it is the pleasure is mostly in the journey as the success is very short in time... sometime sublime, sometime deceiving... but short...
She needs diff locks. Eva, diff locks aren't the same as your centre diff lock. There's no comparison. Far superior than your present traction control. Speak to a mechanic. Also, to know which gear to select in sand, going up dunes and snow. Makes all the difference. Diff locks are only activated when you're really stuck. They will make Odyssey almost unstoppable. She'll crawl up a light post. Cost: around $3500 back and front, or you could just get the rear one. They will transform her.
There are no reason sliding....or driving into the ditch.....she's driving with studded tires.....
I don't know what she's doing while driving.... The conditions were just fine.

I'm glad you made alright. Someone made a point about differential locks .I run equipment and the differential lock is really helpful in a situation like yours .It would pull you out like you were. I really enjoy your videos. You are always on point on your documentary. Safe travels
It seems she just tried to pull to the side of the road not realizing there's actually a ditch (In the Nordics you usually have ditches next to roads) which you can't see in the Winter. So when she drove over the snow covering the ditch, she got stuck.
Vilk is the best dog EVER! He's the most perfect travel companion Eva could've ever chosen. It's so cute the way he looks at her and wants to have a conversation with her. He's a brilliant dog! 😊

Someone should make a high traction, tyre width, roll up "mat" you can lay behind stuck wheels, for that extra grip, especially "bumpy" ground.

@@scottulrich2725 It looks like she has at least one, on the right side of the roof rack. They are of limited utility; I'm hoping she at least tried them. Much more useful would be a snatch-block and some fabric recovery rope and soft shackles...

I’m almost 60 years old and I actually made a bigger mistake than you today. I made myself a chicken burrito and cooked the chicken and the tortilla in the microwave for two minutes. My tortilla is now a potato chip. Don’t be so hard on yourself. I’ve lived in Snow country most my life even the best drivers end up in the ditch sometimes.

I nearly burned downy house two years ago by setting the timer on a biscuit for 20 minutes instead of two. I came back in five minutes. Lucky you. Only a potato chip instead of a tortilla.
A deserved thumbs up! Yes, there was a rookie mistake in pulling off the road for a pee, but this is an audacious mission chronicled by some outstanding filmmaking. Brava!

Might add Recovery Boards, cat litter for traction, and a long tow strap to use with Your winch. Lived in Alaska 36 years and have used the all. Be safe out there.
Tire chains? Even just laying chains on the ground can do the trick often.
I don't understand either why she didn't try her recovery boards. She has at least one bolted on the left side of the roof rack.

Might try not driving off the road 3 times. You’d figured after doing it once you’d learn.
Don’t use cat litter it just turns into slime just use your shovel dig under the snow you’ll find some dirt or gravel that isn’t frozen

Last February I was driving on an icy snow covered street in my Jeep Gladiator, accelerated, only to find it turned 90 degrees to the right. Well I had no steering and skidded sideways into a concrete barrier. Being minus 38 C, my vehicle contacted the rear wheel first, and slingshot my front wheel and axle into the barrier, and the extreme cold made my cast iron front differential pumpkin crack. I had to have the front axle rebuilt with a new axle housing, bent the left front knuckle, and bent control arms, and had to wait 3 months to get parts and have the $12,000 repair completed. We all make mistakes, but thankfully yours were not that costly, and you met good samaritan travellers, to help you on your way. Yes, you had two strikes that day, but you were able to hit one out of the park for the win! Congratulations! You need to get recovery boards, and a 90 foot extension synthetic winch rope, to add to your winch, a 7/8ths x30 foot kinetic rope, a 48 inch x 4 inch tree saver webbing strap, and a few soft shackles, which would have helped. Learning to recover your vehicle would be good content for a future video, and give you piece of mind. Don't sweat the small stuff.
Stay on the road, most roads are slightly sloped to each side for water runoff and snow melt, use your warning flashers if you stop, try and find a side road to pull into if you need to get out, safe travels !! 😊

Being old enough to be alive prior to the age of cell phones, I used to get stuck in forests alone and unable to call anyone for any help.
Being stuck in that snow, my strategy would of been to, very carefully, block all the tires, use the tire jack, and a sufficiently large supporting flat surface, like a board, to act as sort of snow shoe for the jack, at a "safe" pre-compacted point to lift the low side, very slowly, maybe 1 centimeter at a time, and compact as much snow as possible under each centimeter of tire on the low side (maybe even lower the tire a little bit at a time, to help compact the snow), and then up again, until the vehicle is level, then do a similar snow compaction process upon an exit pathway (basically like building a new road on-ramp out of compacted snow, or other available materials, e.g. rocks, etc.).
Ideally though, best to avoid the chaos of going off road, but sometimes it is not appreciated until one finds oneself accidently stuck, then the appreciating and gratuity is amplified to where it needs to be, it's reinforcement learning.

🤔I find it interesting everyone is so quick to give advice on recovery/traction boards and winch accessories, which can definitely be helpful, but Eva just conquered over 3,000 miles across the Arctic in the dead of winter, on a self-sustained expedition of pure creative adventure, captured it as a solo professional film maker, and documented each episode with expert storytelling purely for our enjoyment and inspiration. Expedition North: All I have to say is WELL DONE EVA 🏆
You are SO right. I'd wager that the goal for the month for most of the yenta/desk jockeys was to change the sheets on their beds...and even that didn't get done.
Probably a lot of people have experience of getting stuck just like that even if it is closer to home. I personally don't find it humorous that people try to give advice based on their own experience with the same problem. I would say it is a rather nice thing to do and I doubt there are any ill intentions behind it. A lot of things are worse in the world than people trying to help.
Its not purely for our enjoyment, anyone who posts has a vested interest in the $$$$.

I just love how Vilk moves his head when you’re asking him questions or when he’s figuring out what you’re doing or saying. It’s so obvious how much he loves you, it must feel even better!! The landscape of the snow & dirt reminded me of an artist who used this same landscape of brown & white and integrated American Paint Horses into his Drawing, they’re so beautiful. McDonald, maybe? I loved this video even though you may feel a bit negative about it, you seemed more laid back & relaxed, ready to deal with whatever comes at you…..🍀

If you don't have any traction devices you can always cut some small tree branches and put them under the wheels. Cat litter is good, do NOT use salt. Place them so that the branches are pointed in the same direction of the wheels thin end under the wheels. Wood ash works well too but can be messy.

yes, cat litter (what dog owner carries cat litter on a 1000s mile long trip? And wood ash, it would disappear into the snow she got stuck in!
She has a set of recovery boards on the roof rack.
As a lifelong Mainer (USA) and a vet who has driven many types of vehicles, both tracked and wheeled in all types of weather. I can personally attest to the effectiveness of each of these solutions. Fun fact! dog kibble works in a pinch too. Salt, well that’s a big NO. Just makes ice the perfect shape of the wheel.
@@thomasvose4605 Getting unstuck is an art unto itself.
I will give some advice if you are ever stuck again. Cat liter helps a lot. Just pour it under your tires. It will give you the traction you need to get unstuck.
Or just get a few branches from a nearby tree. Dig in front of and under your tyre, then get the twigs, or a rug or whatever under and in front of the tyre. Just use anything you can find that will give you traction. The snow won’t. I’m from northern Sweden and I’ve gotten stuck many times, but I always managed to get back on the road using this technique. Having an old rug in your trunk to use for this is not a bad idea if you’re driving a lot on rural roads in the winter. And a shovel, of course.

Eva you should use your recovery boards!!! They work great in the snow, maybe consider a winch extension strap, not heavy and can really help! Great Video as always!! Also try different gears in 4low, sometimes 2nd or third helps!
Yea.. I was thinking the same thing.. There are bright orange Maxtrax on the side of the truck. Can't look past them... They are made for getting you unstuck....

I picked up that habit from a dog. If u ask me a question, or if I don't understand something, my head tilts. Also, I like to play fetch the stick and bark a lot.

The bigger the Latitude, the bigger the shovel needs to be!
Get a bundle of cheap blue 12mm PP rope to extend your winch.
Landrover Defender has a very basic drivetrain. Because has open differentials on both axles, it tends to fail when opposite diagonals are spinning or both wheels one side spinning. You then need to help it along with a gentle little bit of left foot braking which prevents the wheel spin (needs practice). That performs the same task as many electronic traction control systems but without the expense!

The ditches are deep in Norway to deal with all the rain, and you just can't see them when they're covered in snow! We all get stuck from time to time, even the best drivers! You got some beautiful footage, and a realistic view of our most desolate areas 😅 Norway has a lot more to offer if you drive along the coast on your way back south, there are some stunning views! I don't understand the drone shots, but I know nothing about drones. She would have to stop and set up the drone and fly it for each shot. Where does she stop considering all that getting stuck problems, and how long does the whole thing take, to stop and fly the drone and then recover it?

If you have even one length of chain, you can loop it thru your hubcap and connect the two ends around the tire. Then the chain can catch and pull you out. I know what a blessing it is when kind people stop their day to help you out - I've had two times when it has happened for me and it really makes you appreciate the goodness and kindness of strangers.

@@Phiyedough Eva realised she needed to do something different with her life after her friend Noraly went north and she would be traveling to Punta Arenas in someone else’s shadow so that led her to where she is today. Not a bad ending to her Scandinavian adventure and I’m interested to see what will come next.

Our roads are often poorly plowed, especially on smaller roads and parking lots where you happened to get stuck..
But as with everything else in life, you learn from small mistakes..😊👍🏼
People are usually helpful if they see someone in trouble, but maybe they were someone who was already late for work because he didn't stop..!?

I am done with adventures. Yesterday I drove to see a Doctor about the case of Lupus variant I have contracted. Some 60 miles in rain and heavy traffic wore me out so completely I spent today doing just about nothing. Looks like my Spring trip to Virginia is going to be rescheduled. I simply do not have the energy. That is annoying. That I am some 40 years older then Eva might have something to do with it.
I really admire your perseverance and willingness to accept that in some situations you need help. Many people can get themselves in real trouble just by being too stubborn to ask for help. I will suggest on a marginal trip like this you can dump the schedule and stop sooner than you planned.

It sucks getting stuck in ice. Eva, you're out driving in ice n snow. Always carry couple bags of cat liter. It helps a lot gaining traction for tires in icy situations.

I normally don't comment like this, but I am flabbergasted honestly how this could happen a second time and both times she didn't use her boards. How do you drive such a vehicle to solo camp in such an environment and then be so inept at getting yourself out of a sticky situation? No extension for the winch as well? I am having a bad day, so this being infuriating to me is partly on me. But come the heck on Eva!

It sounds like it's got a limited slip differential? Because when I engage my locking differential all of the wheels are then locked in front and back, and all move. They are called ARB lockers.
Why did no one break branches off of the trees and feed them into the tires? It gives the tires something to get traction on. Also, if you've got to go wee. There is almost no one around. Just stop on the road.

Yes, I had to do that once. It works!
Yeah, using branches can often work (and in the mud as well). But, cutting branches may be against the local laws.
@@forgottenmusic1 That's when you forage for dead branches...there were plenty of trees around her.
@@timwhite5647 The rules can vary from place to place. If I know correctly, in Finland you cannot take any branches, even dead, if it is on private land. Plus, there can be additional local restrictions in several areas.
@@forgottenmusic1 You are not allowed to damage trees without permission, but you can collect branches that have fallen off already. National parks and other conservation areas have stricter rules.

Hey Will, My favorite shovel is a coal or grain shovel. The scoop is enormous, made of metal, and heavy duty. It scoops about twenty times more snow than Eva's shovel.

pulling over to the edge of the road ( to have a wee ) was a schoolgirl error as you had just been towed out of exactly that part of the road... glad you got help tho
This is what i use when Im stuck in soft sand.
The Bushranger X-Jack is an exhaust jack recovery device designed to assist in recovering your vehicle. Most suitable in soft and unstable terrains where a hi-lift or bottle jack may be unsuitable, such as sand, mud, or snow.

Eva, girl, honest advice: either start using all that "offroad junk" you drag on your Def or just switch to a van (if it's for an overlander look only ;) It was tough to watch you so helpless in a relatively easy rescue (with all this equipment at hand). Take care of yourself.

So so so happy for you and Vilk! I would love to learn more about the tech you use to stay safe on these long trips. I wouldn’t have thought it was possible to have phone service to call for a tow truck to pull you out!
Do you have 4WD or a diff locker on your vehicle? All your power seems to be going to the higher wheels on the road which don't have any traction. If not then consider modding your vehicle, you can usually add some of that functionality. Or try turning off traction control is another one that helps. Or get a Toyota with A-Trac lol.

If you were in Alaska you could phone for help and helicopters would be on the way to rescue you and your dog, but Norway is not Alaska. I hope you make it out alive. How many more daredevil stunts do you think you will survive before one of them gets you? Can't you find a nice guy in Montana to settle down with? Despite being sparsely populated, you are never really alone in the US no matter what kind of trouble you get yourself into or where it happens.

I have lived on a farm in Michigan for over 50 yrs and we heat with wood . The ashes can be used to gain traction on ice . Also have rubbed bark off trees and put on ice to gain traction . Sand works well too . Get a yankem rope for pulling . Brush can be driven on also . The hard part is doing all this by yourself . Helps with a friend , but not impossible .
