  • Why is no one stopping this?! Live Nation and Ticketmaster currently have a hold on the live music industry right now. Today I'm looking at one of the hearings investigating Live Nation & Ticketmaster after the huge backlash they faced when the Taylor Swift tickets went on sale last year and it all went awry. It's becoming increasingly impossible for new artists to tour and incredibly expensive for music fans to attend. What's next?

It doesn't hurt anyone but the headliner and the audience to have the main act on stage at freaking 10:15 PM with an end time of 12-12:30 in the morning. Thats insanity. The towel thing is in deed mad.
I used to work for a local promoter. Bands' riders would regularly include orders for something like 100 towels. Like, four per each band and crew member. Often more.
Of course you do not buy 100 towels for one night. There actually are laundry agencies that you rent towels from. So you rent these 100 something towels.
EVERY show. EVERY show dozens of towels go missing. The drummer and the singer "generously" threw theirs to the fans. Some were taken on the bus by mistake. Some got lost somewhere in the venue. Or whatever.
Now of course, the agency wants their towels back. But they don't get 100 back, they get back, say, 60. For each missing one, you pay a fee. The type of fee that is supposed to deter you from not giving back every towel next time. Let's say the fee is 25 EUR per missing towel. You have 40 missing towels, you pay 1000 EUR. Often you might just as well have bought and all the towels in the first place and given them to the band. But then is it not also an environmental thing? You don't just dispose of a towel. Do you know how much water it takes to produce a cotton towel? You wash and reuse them.
Imagine you have a show a day with towel costs of 1000 a day. In a year you have accumulated 350.000 EUR. For TOWELS.
As a local promoter, you are considered the tiniest cog in the machine. You have no say. How we TRIED to raise sensibilities for towels with the touring agencies and the artists contacts over months. PLEASE, is it so hard, can you just take care of the towels better? They don't grow on trees. But towels are considered dispensible, worthless items to people on tour. There's an endless supply. What do you mean someone rented them? Do they not just appear, out of thin air?
We were never able to get bands to cut down on their incredible wastefulness of towels. Back then it was always us as local promoters footing the bill. No tour manager or agent accepted the towel costs when it came to accounting.
Nowadays, though the local promoter is also Ticketmaster. They are no longer the weakest link to pick up the bill so these costs go back to the artists. If you do take your own towels, Justin, that's good on you. Then you take care of them better. You know they have a price and even if one is only a few quid - dozens, every night, every show, quickly make up an idiotically costly expense that is really completely avoidable.

Nobody stopped them then, nobody is stopping LN now. Also, iHeartRadio has a virtual monopoly of U.S. radio stations, yet, at one point was 20 BILLION in debt, filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy, but somehow retains their stranglehold on radio while also gobbling up vast sections of the podcast market. Sadly, my days of going to 50+ gigs a year, plus a few festivals are long gone. Ridiculous considering I am in a far better position, financially, now - but have to pick and choose the gigs carefully these days.
In the long run, it is the artists that are losing out and the only logical conclusion is as you alluded to at the end of the video - AI for everything.
Fortunately, I have 40+ years of live performances to look back on and fondly remember - started with Zeppelin at Knebworth in '79 and been hooked on live music ever since!

    Ticketmaster sucks.
I know this is small potatoes compared to the Taylor Swift situation, but back in the early fall 2022 I bought advanced tickets for Mercyful Fate's show in Montreal on Nov 11th.
I logged into my Ticketmaster account the day tickets went on sale and panicked when I saw only about 20% of the seats were available for purchase! Thinking they were selling out fast, I grabbed the best seats I could (they were good) for $250 EACH. For Mercyful Fate. Now I love Mercyful Fate, but I thought $250 was a bit steep, but the seats were good and I thought I had done well for myself and friends, thinking the seats were selling out fast.
We get to the show and discover people on either side of us paid $110 EACH for theirs several weeks (not months as in my case) before the show!
I went to the tickets desk and asked WTF was up with that and they said they were "platinum" seats only made available early. I asked "So I paid over double for the privilege of having seats early?" and they said "yes".
    F*ck them.

And conversely, have any bands/artists supported you, but gone on to somewhat overtake your commercial successes? Huge fan of the channel and all you do, keep up the good work

Some seats can even be £150-£300 just to be slightly closer and it's sickening to see.

Somehow, someway, entities like Live Nation/ Ticketmaster are going to find a way to extort money-from either artists or show-goers. If artists sold the tickets directly, they’ll up the cost of the venue, so artists have to charge more. If cheaper venues open, they’ll depend on the support from all artists to stop using LN/T…and it won’t happen…especially if artists can’t even make a serious CZcams video about it.

I noticed the last 15 years or so the secondary ticket market is even worse where any of the good seats to a show are already gone by the time the tickets go on sale unless you are a member of the bands fan club probably for some extra monthly fee or expense. Whole sections will be sold out ahead of time. My 1st rock concert was AC/DC in 2000 standing in line at GI Joes at 8am in the morning waiting for them to open up. The floor and 100 levels sold out within 15 minutes while I was still in line. I felt lucky to even get 4 tickets in the 300 level. Went had an awesome time and life experience. Been to about 100 concerts since then, but still that seemed more fair than how the system is setup today.

Yes thats it everyone gets crushed fans and artists alike. Problem is that no-one walks away from the deal because they are already invested in it , artists need the source of revenue and fans want to see live performance. Many businesses function in this ruthless manner... the only way to escape is to do things differently or find a replacement. I can think of many businesses that take their technology and product and hold it over the consumer and creator in an unfair manner eg itunes, apple, annual subscribtions for almost all software, car dealers and their overbloated quote and part system - all these businesses continually try to milk the consumer for the max revenue and in some cases they do - in other cases they won't because their customer just walks away never to return.

There was a very special venue in Connecticut, formerly with two locations. One in Hartford, that I’ve never attended, an a beautiful
old 300 seat historical music hall built in 1883, in the lovely rural town of Norfolk. That venue I’ve been to many times, but I just learned that location changed hands and won’t be doing music any longer. That fact kind of shook me up, but the point I was trying to get to is that a small, beautiful (with great acoustics I might add) is wonderful place to see up and coming new acts, middle tier acts that aren’t at stadium level (thank God) and BEST of all, “Legend” acts such as the Zombies and the Strawbs, both of which made me feel like I was witnessing Rock History! All this and a reasonable ticket price too, plus the opportunity to have dinner before the show. I would name the venue but I’m not sure of the CZcams policy on that…
Sorry for the lengthy comment, I was just stunned to find out Norfolk had closed. Cheers.

I swore off ticket master years ago- which means I stopped going to live performances. Sucks, but I refuse to pay those kinds of prices. And not only was the price ridiculous, but the venues were also. I love Tool, I went to all their live shows until finally TM started charging like 75 bucks for a ticket, you would then get to the venue only to find they stopped serving alcohol at like 7 PM or something and no smoking was allowed. And I don't mean like there's a no smoking sign- no, I mean cops are literally patrolling the arena and if they catch you- depending on what you're smoking you either get thrown out or possibly taken to jail. I got thrown out and almost taken to jail- apparently weed is still highly illegal in Arkansas. But eventually they settled for me getting out and leaving town- which I did with glee- wadda shit hole. It was without a doubt the most expensive and worst concert I've ever been to.
And since it was like the 3rd show in a row that costed way too much and then was a disappointment- I just stopped going. When I was younger concerts were fucking awesome- for around 20 bucks you would have the time of your life and see all kinds of debauchery and immorality in all its wonderous glory- and if you played your cards right, you might even get laid. Now you pay 3-4 times as much to sit quietly, and it better be in the seat you paid for- otherwise they'll throw you out or arrest you, or both. Fuck that- I'm out.
