  • This is a video of various Aurizon and Pacific National coal trains taken at Gladstone in Central Queensland.
Gladstone is a major centre on the coast of Queensland with a population of about 35000 people and is located 108 km south east of Rockhampton and 517 km north of Brisbane Queensland. Gladstone is served by Queensland Rail's Rockhampton tilt train daily and the Spirit of the Outback twice a week plus the Spirit of Queensland tilt train 5 times a week. As well as number of daily coach services operated by Greyhound.
Gladstone is home to the Port of Gladstone one of the largest coal export ports in the world. Around 64 million tonnes of coal is delivered to the port of Gladstone by rail for export to the world. The export coal is sourced from the Moura and Blackwater coal fields.
Gladstone is located on Queensland's north coast railway that links Brisbane with Cairns. Gladstone is also located at the port end of the Blackwater coal railway system. All railways within the gladstone area are 1067mm narrow gauge and electrified using AC 25KV overhead power with the sole exception to this being the Moura coal railway which is not electrified.
The coal haulage is provided by both Aurizon and Pacific National using a mixture of electric locomotive hauled trains and diesel locomotive hauled trains. Given the length of the coal trains multiple locomotives are typically seen hauling the trains and often with mid train locomotives to provide extra power. These coal trains are among the heaviest narrow gauge trains in the world.
