I was at this show (teaching in N.H.) with my son who is now 42. My POS husband couldn't get the time off. My son was young, still nursing and I was high as a kite on the energy, all the phone's hanging, dancing in the hallway which has incredible speakers. My son was in a front pack- missing nothing. Just when Jerry hit the line about a child shall ring that bell, a tall gentleman danced by and gave my son a small brass bell. Dude, if you're still out there, thanks and blessings- still got the bell. One of my favorite live shows ever & you were a big part of that- we are one.

I mean, Jon Mayer 's a great guitarist and everything, but freaking Jerry is a legend! Every once in a while he's just go on a guitar rampage, just shredding! Jerry will always and forever be my "write-in" candidate for the President of the United States of America...

Happy Birthday Jerry! I love this live version of FT! Tempo is up. The fact that Jerry can sing, play rhythm and lead guitar and smile throughout the song is a testament to his skill. And the band's ability to play quiet at the right time is amazing!

What I find most unique about Grateful Dead music is that there are a lot of instruments playing, it should be very busy and muddied, but yet there is clarity and space inside of it. You can focus on any one thing and hear it clearly in the mix.

My classic radio station features some of the greatest guitarists ever. Page, Hendrix, Stevie Ray, Angus Young, Randy Rhoads. Radio doesn't play a lot of Dead and when I listen to it I can't help but feel like I'm hearing the guitar for the first time. This is some fantastic stuff and we are blessed to have it preserved.

100% brother - so much compressed in to that short bit. More than most listeners can really grab - you have to be paying attention; and these are the types of phraseings that each member of the band tossed in there like "inside jokes" for their own entertainment whether anyone else got them or not. They were each masters of their craft and their position in the pyramid. And they all paid attention. Such a joy to see this now 42 years after the fact - a techno-treat from the past.

I saw this performance on TV right after Jerry Garcia passed away in '95. I was 15 years old and it had just begun learning to play guitar myself. The performance is more complete if it includes Mickey and Bill's feature. I think I borrowed a lick that Phil plays near the end a couple of years later when I was playing a different song in a fusion band.
When Garcia's death was first announced in '95, my oldest cousin who was a diehard deadhead fell apart. Her family came to my house later that day to visit my mother who'd lost her own father, and my cousin asked if I had a picture of Garcia. I told her that I only had video footage of him. The minute the words escaped my lips, I knew that was about to change.

I keep hearing all these cultural and social references in the dialogue of American TV shows about this band called The Grateful Dead or Jerry Garcia and how cool and significant and relevant they are.
    " I saw a Dead Head sticker on a Cadillac " from Don Henley's " Boys of Summer "
Americans rave on about how great this band is.
So I was thinking, wow, they must be very good.
You can't imagine my disappointment when I listened to their ' Greatest Hits ' album.
All their songs sound like a variation of themselves.
Dull and boring attempts at Roots n Blues.

The Grateful Dead was meant to be listened to live.
Their studio albums are rough drafts.
I agree that sometimes the " white boy blues " falls flat.
But if you don't like at least some of their songs played live than you don't like rock or psychedelic music.

"They re-confirm that I have exquisite taste in music" Elevator Muzak?
That's OK, Alan; they're not for everyone.
And nobody thinks any the less of you for that -- really, they don't.
You have nothing to feel insecure about, nothing at all.

Good song except for overly stoned Weir who is taking it way too seriously… kinda creepy

My son Chubby McTubby cheeks said “Garcia’s solos are like walking on an indoor track with an old person.” Slow, repetitive, gets nowhere, uninteresting, something to be endured out of guilt.
