    In this video I compare the Roli Seaboard Block with the Seaboard Rise. If you’re trying to decide which one to buy, this video may help you. I discuss the differences between the Seaboard Block and Seaboard Rise including the feel, price, controls, buttons, features, and included software and sounds. In this video I am using the Seaboard Rise 49 for the comparison. The Rise also comes in a 25 key version. Both the Seaboard Rise and Block make use of MIDI Polyphonic Expression which allows you to control sounds in magical ways. I demo some of the sounds and control of both keyboards in this video. This is a comparison of the Seaboard Block and Seaboard Rise.

    I bought the Roli Seaboard 49 before Blocks was introduced and have really enjoyed playing it. Even if I were to buy Roli products today, I would still go with the Seaboard Rise 49. Main reason is standard keyboard far as key spacings, and also enjoy the long Slide bars which run on top and bottom along full length of the 49 keys.

    I have had a Seaboard Rise 49 for a while and love it. Your videos on the Seaboard Block were a real influence on my grabbing one of those blocks as well. Two different animals. I find the Rise to be a little truer to a piano as the waves are basically standard sized. The block version is nice for noodling and setting on the extra space of a controller or my pianet for a bit of extra color. The block is great for brass and woodwind sounds since you can get little slips and slides that sound expressive and natural. The Rise I find more natural for strings and sitar sounds. Plus having 4 octaves makes it easier to play two handed. I have a few 2 octave controllers along with a couple 3 octave pieces of gear. I really need 3 octaves for two handed work but for lead lines and solos, the Seaboard Block helps to build ideas.
    They may be similar but the differences really compliment each other a lot more than I thought they would.

    I'd really like to get a Seaboard Block or two. Maybe a Seaboard Block and a Lumi keys? But I feel like I'd get more out of the Seaboard because of the gliders on the top and bottom in addition to all the other features like the vibrato and lift, and I don't necessarily need auto-chords and arpeggiators, but that would be cool to have if I decided to get a Keys and a Seaboard and one of the other control blocks. All the extra software in the bundles would be cool to have, but I'm happy just using free soundfonts on FL Studio

    Block is equal or even better. That extra controllers on the left side on the big one is not very sensitive (especially square one, expectations were different). But not bad.... I like that on Rise the keys themselves seem to be larger. With my clumsy ADHD fingers, it makes it look like it's going to be easier to play with precision without focusing on it that much, delving more into the intuitive feel rather than conscious control. On the other hand, some far reaching chords will be easier on Block, especially for someone with tiny hands that won't stretch as wide for purely physical reasons. Can you comment on that?
    Also, if you want to have more keys, you can put a few blocks next to each other. How would that compare to playing Rise? Especially gliding at the point where 2 Blocks meet, there's not going to be a smooth surface - how much does that disturb the feel and sound of a glide?
    And also, the ability of Block to be joined together with other ROLI products makes me think of Lumi. Do Block and Lumi go well together? I imagine for instance using Lumi with left hand for bassline and Seaboard Block with the right hand for melodies, or other combinations like that. Do you have any experience how such combinations would work together?

    Had a Seaboard Block for a while. Found the keys a bit small, and the rippled surface just seemed (to me) to get in the way. The device requires a surprising amount of finger force to play-resulting in quite a bit of friction-and this means the Block wants to slide around on the table if you don’t hold it in place. The Rise will stay in place better and may be a little easier to play, but I’ve only had a few minutes with one, and it didn’t seem drastically easier. I suppose either of these are pretty good for the money-and Equator is very good indeed-but I’m moving on to the flat, more delicate playing surface of Haken.

      You don't need to already play piano before you can play the seaboard, althought it would help.
      If you want to play the seaboard then learn the seaboard,
      otherwise it would be like wanting to learn play guitar but instead you go and learn bass to help you learn guitar faster.
      My dad has wanted to learn guitar for as long as i can rember,
      but he alway tried to learn somthing easier first, like harmonica then cajon then bass.
      He never realy stuck with it.
      He has started leanring guitar now though,
      but he could have started 10 or 20 years earlier instead of leanring something easier first
      I hope that helps

      The Seaboard Rise has a sustain pedal input. The Seaboard Block does not, but once you connect any other sustain pedal to your setup (through another keyboard for example), the Seaboard Block will work with it.

      I was lucky enough to get my 25 key rise on amazon for 200ish bucks since it was “used”. Which meant essentially brand new. Whether there was a previous owner or not, amazon warned of damage, which to my delight, was not there. So while i would keep a level of skepticism when doing that as I understand I did get lucky, I would definitely encourage finding a comparable deal. As for the rise itself, it is a solid beast.

    • @mopishlynx2323
      @mopishlynx2323 Pƙed 4 lety +1

      You may have already found this, but absolutely not. I bought a seaboard block, expecting to be able to use it with fl studio. The most it can do is work with some MPE compatable VSTs, but most of those are paid and I ended up having to use audacity to record the sounds from equator into fl studio. They just came out with their studio software, and it supposedly worked as a vst for fl studio. It did not. You could use the sounds but you had to use a traditional piano roll and could not use the seaboard. Apple is the parent company to Roli, and so, they put IOS first for their products and never once allowed Roli products to work with windows. Bluetooth is also disabled for the windows version.

    I have the RISE 49 and currently testing a friend's Seaboard Block. I am finding that the press dimension is much more linear on the block. On the RISE it is really jumpy and unpredictable in the very low press values. Even though I prefer the rise I still think the blocks sensitivity is better handled making playing sounds more interactive and expressive

      Sanjay C My first experiences:
      Midi bluetooth on Mac sucks
      The seaboard has cool effects but to get real value out of it you have to upgrade the equator.
      It is not a piano. It’s perfect for all long lasting instruments but not for single tap ones, because its strike sensitivity isnt the best.
      But in the other ones it is by far the best, right after the originals

    Hi Sanjay, i am only beginning to delve into this type of music making, so i am asking your well-informed opinion and advice: in order to produce layered “space jazz” harmonic overtone compositions and play them live, which hardware is best? Ableton push1? Push2? Roli lightpad block? I am sampling analog instruments and putting samples as sounds on hardware to layer. Thanks so much!

    • @SanjayC
      @SanjayC  Pƙed 5 lety +2

      Ableton Push and the Lightpad Block are such different devices. Ableton Push is meant to be a complete controller for Ableton Live. Its drum pad function is a bonus. If you're just looking for a drum pad, you'll save money by buying a Lightpad or another drum pad. I love my Push 2, for sure, but its overkill for some applications. I wish I had a better answer for you, but its more complicated. You should try to test them both out.
