I went back to my outprcessing NCO and told him about it and he said I was correct. I was so pissed off I stopped showing up to drill after one year. I won't dogpile on this Service Member's video like a lot of others are. My personal experience with the Guard is that they make promises that they can't fulfill. I spent over two years waiting for a blood pressure waiver before 9/11, with multiple Recruiters telling me it was submitted, then their replacements insisting they had no record of such. "Resubmit." I went Active Duty, retired after 21 years, and am enjoying life now in my mid-40s, not having to wait another 10+ years for retirement pay to kick in. As a Recruiter, I witnessed ARNG Recruiters telling the same lies to Applicants. Basically, if you're disqualified for a reason that may be waiverable in the future, they'll keep you in their pocket. I knew a few high school students who talked like they were in the Guard, so I left them alone, only to find out months later that they were being baited along with promises of going to MEPS to sign their contract each month.
SPC Kellum has his Air Assault Badge, which is a sign that he's squared away. Even with the state-run Regional Training Institutes, it's hard to get special qualifications in the Guard. I did Air Assault at Fort Campbell back in '04 and we had a few Guard Soldiers there who were only able to attend because they were mobilized on federal orders. The state funds all schools otherwise, so if you want to be an Airborne Ranger (qualified, not scrolled), you're best off going Active.
I will say that ARNG Trainees have an edge on their peers in BCT or OSUT. As a Senior Drill Sergeant, I saw the benefits of the Recruit Sustainment Program over even the Future Soldier Program which I supervised over the last two years of my time as a Recruiter.

Most drill weekends consisted of online certs/classes, layouts and sitting around waiting for 1900. Went Active after my first contract and it was the best decision I've ever made. None, the Guard has less promotion potential as slots are by the State. You also can move to another state without having to deal with being stuck in the Guard for the state you joined in.. go on tell them

I get real confused. Every state has their own national guard? I see New Jersey national guard, New York national guard. Are these run by the state or the federal government. Never was clear on that part even after googling it. I assume this is the video in which you explain why you joined the army. It got you to Florida and tuition free in a Florida university. You got to leave Massachusetts and I don’t blame you. Two states I can’t imagine being from are Massachusetts and Delaware.

National Guard are reserve forces of the military (federal) but delegated to state authority, meaning under respective state government control (state status) during normal times. Apart from the 50 states; DC, Puerto Rico, Virgin Island & Guam have their own National Guards and answer to their governors; DC National Guard answers to the President. Governor of a state can use the National Guard to assist during social disorder, disaster relief, crisis etc only within that state. National Guard can be federalized (feds regain control) during times of war or national emergency to support the active duty forces. Even though under state status during peace time, they're still required to follow military procedures and the UCMJ as well as report to the National Guard Bureau (federal entity that oversees all National Guard units), so administratively the feds still got a little authority over it.

Half stepper smh... jk I wish I went national guard, to anyone listening active definitely has its pros but if you aren't 100 percent about trying to be a solider and what that comes with and what that means sacrificing national guard or reserves is a great way to serve, get some great benefits, and make some extra cash without giving up a whole lot, especially if you can score a mos that transfers well into the civilian world cause your ait training will Essentially act as a fast tracked free schooling (doubley if you can manage to get into a mos that gives you a clearance of some kind)
