  • Here we are at the end of this great mini series, and we really had a good time watching it and talking about it. Both in the intro and at the end of the discussion we talk about what we are thinking about doing in the future, so please feel free to give us some recommendations in the comments. Thank you all so much for following along and all of the extra knowledge and stories you've shared with us, we really appreciate it.
Remember this is not a substitute for watching the actual show.
If you haven't seen it, then please do so (available on HBO) and then come back to the video afterwards.

The hunting scene always stuck with me. Eugene's father gets out of the truck and grabs his gear from out of the back. Eugene gets out of the truck holding his weapon with his ammo pouch slung like he was about to land on another island.

Eugene was super lucky to have father like that ... his dad was a surgeon during WWI so he really understood what soldiers went thru .... and helped him to cope with his PTSD, after the hunting incident he advised him to pick hobbies like bird watching and hiking ... and that really helped him

I like your Dad's calm cool spirit. I would actually enjoy having a meal with him and just chatting. Keep doing series reactions with him.

"They shall not grow old" is an amazing documentary with only remastered WW1 footage, narrated by soldiers who fought in the war. It was directed by Peter Jackson. Easily the best documentary I have ever seen.

I've said it before but I'd be fascinated to see you two watch "Generation Kill". Imagine this series but during the Iraq invasion. I wonder what your dad would think of the relatively modern war. Also if you do watch it, make sure to watch the documentary episode at the end where the real soldiers round table discuss the series.

Thank you both for watching and reacting to this. As a Navy veteran in a military family, it is great to see you and your dad together commenting on these episodes. I watched Band of Brothers with my dad when it came out. We were supposed to watch this series together as well but he passed away last year. He was an Army Veteran of 29 years, served in Vietnam and the first Gulf war. Its always special to be able to enjoy the knowledge and wisdom of your dad here! Thank you both.

Your dad's a permanent part of the channel now. We need to see his reactions to some of classic WWII and Vietnam war movies. And then there's shows like Generation Kill and Generation War (WWII from the German POV). And in a year or two, we'll get the third miniseries from Spielberg and Hanks after BoB and The Pacific.

Eugene was with the 1st Marine Division, who following the surrender of Japan, was sent to Northern China as the lead combat element of the III Amphibious Corps with the primary mission of repatriating more than 650,000 Japanese soldiers and civilians still resident in that part of China. The last elements of the 1st MarDiv finally left China on 1 September 1947.

Sledge wrote a book called China Marine detailing the events between the the end of the war and his unit’s return home, along with his life after the war. It picks up where With the Old Breed ends. Both are fantastic reads.
