I finally got back to the big tank project! This was more fun than I even remembered.
Many of you may remember that the tank had a clamshell style cover, and it seemed like a good idea to me at the time but it had two 30 Kg gas cylinders to help with the lifting and those pushed the lid forward constantly when the lid was closed. That shifted the cover forward and bent the back of the frame, a couple of the hinges also broke. That paired with the fact that it was going to be impossible to fit a turret on top (too heavy) and that it was incredibly disorienting (and uncomfortable) to ride the tank on my back made me discard the idea and start over.
The new seat is surprisingly comfortable (I've never designed a seat before) and it allows for the next modification to the driving of the tank, PEDALS!. Before getting to the pedals idea I revolved a lot around a complex driving wheel with buttons and levers but in the end, my feet where free and is super intuitive to control. In the video you may see that I put a couple of encoders on the pedals but those had pretty poor resolution and I had only 12 encoder counts for the entire travel of each speed so I ended up temporarily connecting linear potentiometers to the Arduino as an almost drop in replacement. I'll need to swap those for something more robust and most probably will add two on each pedal as a safety as this thing going hay wire doesn't sound safe. I also added a couple of 200 amp switches on the panel behind the seat that will in the future cut power to the batteries.
And as an inevitable modification I removed the three chain reduction gear that I previously mounted as it was extremely unreliable and kept broke, I broke chains, shafts, bolts.. everything in it was failing all the time. Since I made that video I've learned a lot and HTD 5M belts seem to be the most reliable and easy to design for solution so I went with that.
The turret and the cannon will be sitting in the flat spot on top where I've already left mounting holes.

I was a tank commander in the US Army, and nothing was more comfortable than the M1 family of tanks and their reclining driver seat.
WAY more comfortable than the previous (M60A3) class of tank.
Also, I believe you're the only one who measures their 3D FDM prints in "tens of kilos"!
I was also on the M1, and M1A1. Totally agree. Best place to take a nap. Also, if you which to dutch oven your crew, best place to do a chemical attack. I can remember a few times during gunnery my crew was the "sensing tank" during Tank Table 8 at Ft. Polk. We had to traverse over the back so I could kick the driver's chair to wake him up. He had a hot mike and was snoring through the coms... DUH...

I always knew you used a metric shitload of red filament, but it’s still insane seeing all of the raw spooled filament piled up. It really puts it into perspective how insane these projects are.

This video is full of smart, convenient little things. The way the springs are mounted, bearings are placed, breakaway spacers! Also that chair, if you add legs you can sell them as exclusive high end furniture xD Good to see the tank back, awesome video!

As usual, you never fail to impress. This thing is a beast! Seems to handle pretty smoothly. Can't wait to see it fully operational. I need to know your secret for getting such huge prints done so fast. My last print on my "normal" size printer was three smallish boxes about the size of pencil cases and it still took 30 hrs. I know how you feel, which is why I've been designing so many small things over the years since I got my printer, the results are 'instant' compared to the multi-hour prints like this tank. My latest designs I uploaded are tiny TPU bungs that fill USB-C and Micro-USB sockets on drone flight controllers to stop debris getting in when you crash into the trees/bushes/ground, they only take 2 minutes each to print :)

Size of those prints is amazing.
Most hacksaws have another set of pins for the blade so you can tilt it to 45 degrees. Really useful for the flush cuts you had to do in the chair segment.
Seeing the sad news these days I would have thought we'd have seen enough of Ivans driving tanks. We can make a big exception for this Ivan tank though. It's looking great and well worth the long wait. Looking forward to seeing the finished tank. Thanks Ivan.

I am constantly amazed at the engineering prowess you have. If you offer someone else to drive your tank, ensure that he or she is not a pilot, as you have the pedals reversed from that in an aircraft!
