- Each year, children dress up in the scariest or funniest costumes and masks and go door to door to collect treats. The tradition, known as Halloween, is a time for children to look different, act different, and be rewarded. But what about adults?
In our everyday, adults dress up, wearing a different “masks” or personas in the world in order to be accepted and/or rewarded. Everyone has an “outside” mask we show others and the “inside” mask that only those we know, and trust are allowed to see.
For adults, the masks represent certain behavioral patterns usually adopted during childhood, to keep us safe and to make others more comfortable in our presence. The challenge is what happens when the mask becomes too tight, too small, or emotionally restrictive, and prevents us from living authentically.
Because very few of us escaped from childhood unscathed, we wear masks to hide or deny our vulnerability. For many, the mask can be a protective shield. For others it is a defense mechanism. For most, the mask is a coping mechanism that ensures we will get what we need or want from others.
In every case, whether we are aware of our masks or not, the fear of shedding the mask, and the behaviors adopted to keep it in place, can prevent us from experiencing true and deep intimacy with our loved ones. In the worst-case scenario, the masks we wear keep us stuck in situations, circumstances and relationships that prevent us from finding true peace, joy and the fulfillment of our life’s purpose. Whether we trick ourselves into believing the mask is necessary for survival or, if we treat others by allowing them to peek behind the mask, it is important to understand why we wear masks, the issue under the masks that may require healing and how to safely take the mask off.🎭

Amber, congrats. I myself am 55 and notice those situations that have been done to me Molestations and the more, taking advantage of me. But I have learned from Iyanla, IT'S okay to stand in your truth, but you dont have to put that mask on and say I will never let someone use and abuse me. Like she said all you need to do is give it voice when it happens and you DON'T have to use Profanity. God is great, and will always put positive people in your life.

Oh my God. Me too. I'm from Saudi Arabia as well. It's so overwhelming to see another side of life that we were not used to. Iyanla vanzant has became my spiritual mother and healer. One of the first book I bought is her book (one day my soul just opened up). The fact we have someone like Iyanla, Oprah and many other teachers is a true blessing.

I was having such a rough day today and prayed for help and answers. It is one of my weaknesses not being able to wear a mask when one would actually protect me from being taken advantage of emotionally and then resenting those who do so. When you said be where you are, feel what you feel, and go through what you need to go through, I genuinely felt that. I'm having a rough day at work but I'm trying to maintain the mask of the cheery, happy person but I'm having a hard time keeping it up. I needed to hear those words of wisdom

I love when she says "You don't have to respond the way you did when you were 7?" I am going through all of this now with my family and them not treating me like an adult?! They always assume the worse about me and don't ever care about how I feel...and my response to them is always distance or ignoring them altogether?!!!! It drives me so crazy, because this was one of things my therapist & I discuss all the time and she always tells me to them how I feel and to set the boundary?!!!!! Amazing words from Mama Iyanla! I appreciated the part about how to identify when a person is wearing the mask.... My heart/my boyfriend is from Brooklyn NY and most times it is hard to talk to him ESPECIALLY when we are hitting a subject that hits a nerve for him.... I keep looking in the mirror to remind myself that I am not responsible for the mask that he is wearing. I am a teacher and just need to be more intuitive on when a person is ready for what I feel God is wanting me say. But thank you Momma Vee for this information.
