The Khyber Steam Safari is a defunct tourist train that was operated between Peshawar and Landi Kotal. Regular passenger service along the Khyber Pass Railway began on 4 November 1925 between Peshawar City railway station and Landi Kotal railway station.
The train took passengers through rugged mountainous terrain reaching a height of 1,200 m (3,900 ft) to reach Landi Kotal and covering a total distance of 52 km (32 mi) through 34 tunnels and 92 bridges and culverts. The oil-fired steam engines, which pushed and pulled the carriages from the rear and front, were built by Vulcan Foundry and by Kitson & Co in the United Kingdom. One of the unusual features of this train journey was that its route passed across Peshawar Airport's main runway.
On 3 April 1926, the railway was extended to Landi Khana, just 3 kilometers from the Torkham border crossing with Afghanistan. In 1932, the Landi Kotal to Landi Khana section of railway was closed down at the insistence of Afghan government. Regularly scheduled rail service continued between Peshawar and Landi Kotal until 1982, when it stopped due to lack of commercial value.
In 1996, Sehrai Travels’ in collaboration with Sarhad Tourism Corporation launched the Khyber Steam Safari for foreign and local tourists and was described by Time Magazine as "a journey into time and history". The train consisted of a refurbished parlor car and two second class coaches pulled by two vintage steam locomotives, as those used originally on the Khyber Pass Railway. The train was run on the first Sunday of every month as a charter, however the local population around the Khyber Pass were allowed free access. Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation took over operations in 2006 and in the same year the service was suspended due to damage of the line caused by monsoon rain.
The track as of today is closed for all rail traffic.

This railway safari was operative till 1994 ,i my self organised this train safari for MD SHELL international in 1994, one station of this train is near Khyber teaching hospital ,the unique thing of this train was that in the middle of its way in one of the turnings it could not turn so the engine pulling it pushes and the engine pushing it pushes.
Maybe you are right sir. By the way, I have mentioned the same year which is preserved in the railway records. Sorry, if I'm wrong.

Highly grateful to Gilani logs, just because of you we have seen such prodigious places that we have never heard of, let alone seen. We are the most unique and unfortunate nation in the world that has destroyed its those historical assets with our own hands which were made by others for us, which we can't even think of restoration of such unbelievable wonders. Hats off to your astounding and tiring efforts and to your historical expertise for exploring those rare gems which have been lost somewhere in the dust of time۔ That's why I consider you to be the most finest vlogger of this era.
It was my deepest wish to vlog the Khyber Safari but when I asked one of my media friends in Peshawar, the reply was that there was nothing left but blocked tunnels, broken tracks and collapsed bridges. What will you say there? I replied that please arrange for me to reach Landi Kotal, the rest is my job.
He put me in touch with a rental car driver and the rest is in front of you.
You are right to say that others have made it easy for us but we have ruined it all with our own hands. I have seen everything with my own eyes, I cry when I see this structure, but there is no one to wipe my tears or fix it.

My father was born at peshawer in 1905. He had travelled from landikotal to Peshawar by trolly According to him for every mile/km Rs 1 lakh was spent . This amount included labour hired for construction & bribes to the Maliks.

I travelled in this train about65 years ago, the informations being given by the narrator are correct.i witnessed the 52 bridges and about 42 tunnels. In zig zag way two engines took it from Peshawar to Landi kotal. Its ticket for non local was 8 annas.
Recently i travelled via road. The ruins are still saved ,may be restored in its original condition.
I proposed for its restoration if INESCO, provide sufficient funds, because it needs huge ecpenditure.
May be proved 8th wonders of the world,engineered by human being. I in my personal capacity approach ed the then Railway Minister of Pakistan, but,to nò response. I would be glad that some international forum may take interest to save this Man made heritage.

It is also good that you personally spoke to the Ministry of Railways and paid your right. Our misfortune is that we are not able to repair our small monuments because firstly we have no interest in them and secondly we have no money. That's why I read "Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un" at the end of vlog because I don't see any signs of reviving this great project.

السلام علیکم! سید صاحب،لنڈی کوتل سفاری ٹرین کے بارے آپ کا ویلاگ دیکھا،بہت ہی دلچسپ اور معلومات سے بھر پور ہے۔اس سے میرے بچپن اور پھر لڑکپن کی یادیں تازہ ہو گئی ہیں،کیونکہ میرے والد محترم محکمہ ریلوے میں بطور اسسٹنٹ اسٹیشن ماسٹر اور بعد ازاں اسٹیشن ماسٹر کے فرائص سر انجام دیتے رہے ہیں۔اور والد صاحب کا تبادلہ جس بھی اسٹیشن پر ہوتا تھا،فیملی کو اپنے ساتھ رکھا کرتے تھے۔اس زمانے میں گاڑیوں کے ساتھ سٹیم انجن ہی لگا کرتے تھے جو مجھے بہت ہی اٹریکٹ کرتے تھے۔آج جب آپ کا یہ ویلاگ دیکھا تو بچپن کی وہ تمام یادیں اور باتیں ایک فلم کی طرح آنکھوں کے سامنے چلنے لگیں اور آنکھوں کو پرنم کر گئیں۔آخر میں جب آپ نے "آنا للہ وانا الیہ رجعون" پڑھا تو دل اور بھی دکھی ہو گیا۔لیکن یہ بات بھی قابل تسلیم ہے کہ صرف لنڈی کوتل سیکشن ہی نہیں اور بھی بہت سے ریلوے کے سیکشن پر یہ آیت شریف پڑھی جا چکی ہے۔بس دعا گو ہوں کہ اللہ ہمارے ملک کو سیاسی اور معاشی مسائل کی دلدل سے نکالے اور امن اور خوشحالی ہمارا مقدر بنے اور ریلوے نئے سرے سے بحال ہو،آمین!جزاک اللّہ خیرا کثیرا۔

خوشی ہوئی سرکار کیونکہ آپ کی طرح میرا بچپن بھی ریلوے اسٹیشنز، گاڑیوں، ڈیزل اور اسٹیم انجنز میں سفر کرتے گزرا ہے۔ آپ کی طرح میرے والد مرحوم بھی اے ایس ایم، اسٹیشن ماسٹر، سیکشن کنٹرولر اور پھر چیف کنٹرولر کی حیثییت سے کام کرتے رہے۔ اس زمانے کے ریلوے سسٹم کو میں خود بھی آپریٹ کیا کرتا تھا، والد صاحب کی نظر بچا کر۔
ہم نے ریلوے کو مکمل فعال دیکھا ہے اس لیے اب اس کی زبوں حالی دیکھ کر دکھ ہوتا ہے۔ آپ درست کہتے ہیں کہ ریلوے کے بہت سے سیکشنز کے بارے میں وہی آیت پڑھی جا سکتی ہے جو میں نے اس وی لاگ کے آخر میں پڑھی۔ وہ بھی انتہائی کرب کے عالم میں پڑھی تھی اور آپ کے تبصرے سے میں ایک بار پھر لنڈی کوتل ریلوے اسٹیشن پہنچ گیا ہوں۔
میں آپ کی دعاوں میں برابر کا شریک ہوں کیونکہ جہاں جاتا ہوں، کھنڈر اور تباہی ہی ملتی ہے۔ دوسری قومیں اپنی تاریخ سنبھال کر خوش ہوتی ہیں اور ہم اسے برباد کرنے میں خوشی محسوس کرتے ہیں۔

The book.FREEDOM AT MIDNIGHT...Told us about last British Post of India at Landikotal .Here the Union Jack was.lowered in the midnight of 14th n15th August 1947..It used to remain hurling all the times. The entry point to India on Khyber Pass.THANKS FOR THIS CLIP..WE COULD LITERALLY SEE IT .Till now imagined only. BEST WISHES FROM LUCKNOW.

In 1905 , the railway track all over the sub-continent ( including Pakistan, India , Bangladesh and the Islands of Indian Oceans , Burma , Sri Lanka , etc ) was 17000 ( Seventeen Thousands ) miles and all over the world was 70000 ( Seventy Thousands ) miles laid by the British Government , the authentic figure. Before the partition of the sub-continent there were several steam locomotive trains , the Frontier Mail , from PESHAWAR to DELHI , PESHAWAR to BOMBAY , from PESHAWAR to Madras. Madras is very far away from PESHAWAR. Still it takes four days from Amritsar to MADRAS by Indian Diesel and Electric Train.

@@RakeshSharma-xs3vb , Yes , of course , the best era of British India was when my ancestors used to travel all over the greater India. The now, RADIO PAKISTAN , PESHAWAR was All INDIA RADIO PESHAWAR. My ancestors used to enjoy on beach side of the then BOMBAY.
A nice effort by the narrator who has tried to convey everything about the Khyber line. One small mistake was that of the ZB steam loco which was narrow gauge and could not have run on this line. Maybe it had run on the line from Bostan to Zhob (which is also closed permanently).

میں نے 1965 میں جب نہم کلاس کا سٹوڈنٹ تھا موسم گرما کی تعطیلات میں پشاور سے لنڈی کوتل اور واپسی کا سفر اس ٹرین میں کیا تھا۔جس کا سہا نی یادیں آج بھی موجود ہیں۔ ریلوے ٹریک کے ساتھ سنگلاخ پہاڑوں کی چٹانوں پر بنے ہوئے قلعہ نما گھر دشوار گزار چٹانوں پر گاس کی تلاش میں چلتی ہوئی پہاڑی بکریاں اور ایمان تازہ کرنے والے مناظر۔لنڈی کوتل کا اسوقت کا بازار وہاں kingsun, wingsun کے قلم(pen) اور Camy گھڑی کی خریداری جسکا خرچہ غالباً 100روپیہ یا شاید اس سے بھی کم ۔ بھوک لگنے پر پہاڑی بکرے کے گوشت کی مزیدار کڑاہی اور پٹھان بھائیوں کے ہاتھ کی پکی روٹیاں جو کہ زندگی میں پہلی بار کھائی جس کی لزت برا ذائقہ آجتک نہیں بھولا۔ کیونکہ اس وقت تک ہمارے پنجاب میں کڑاہی گوشت کھانے کا کوئی خاص رواج نہیں تھا۔
واہ، اللہ آپ کی ان خوش گوار یادوں کو ہمیشہ سلامت رکھے۔ تبصرے کا بہت شکریہ، خوش رہیں، سلامت رہیں۔

The track was destroyed in the massive floods of 2010. Another information Gillani Sahib for you is that track was made almost upto Jalalabad in Afghanistan, I have seen the ruined track during my various visits to Kabul and beyond. If I get any local reference of Bahawalnagar, I will definitely visit one day. Insha Allah. The advantage of a local person is that he knows many places and can guide me. If you see someone who can give me 2/3 days, tell me, I will come.
It was indeed a historic railway line but we ourselves have ruined it. Dozens of such tracks have been destroyed in Pakistan. I myself would like to vlog it and go to its last station in Pakistan.

This railway track was made by The British Government to extend it to Afghanistan for military purposes but failed to extend due to the immense resistance faced from Afghanistan side and local maliks because British India was every where , all over the world, except , Afghanistan and Makkah & Medina , the Hijaz area.

Gud job Sir. Pl do a vlog on Mandra- Chakwal- Bhaun line. My dadaji was Stn Master of Sukho at partition time. He was native of Sukho & remained at various Stns around Pindi. From Ludhiana.
Mandra- Chakwal- Bhaun railway line to kab ki bik chuki sarkar. Vlog kis par karon. Us chor ki qabar par khaday ho kar jis ne pehlay yeh track ukhara aur pher baich khaya.

ماشاءاللہ میں نے بچپن میں اسمیں سفر کیا ھے میرا تعلق پشاور سے ھے میرے والد صاحب پشاور ریلوے میں اسٹیشن ماسٹر تھے پنڈی کوتل میں ایک بارہ بازار بھی تھا آ پ نے اس کل ذکر نہیں کیا پرانی یادیں لیکن بہت افسوس ھوا اس کا یہ حال دیکھ کر
جی بالکل باڑہ بازار بھی ہے لیکن میرا فوکس صرف یہ اجڑی ریلوے تھی اس لیے کسی اور بات کا حوالہ ہی نہیں دیا۔

اس ویڈیو کا اخری جلمہ بہت interesting ھے مگر میں ایک بات کہنا چاھوں گی کہ پاکستان کے بہت سے معاملات ایسے ھیں جن میں یہ ایت پوری اترتی ھے۔ اور فہرست طویل ھے بس اپ اچھی اچھی ویڈیوز بناتے ریا کر اور ھم خوش ھوتے رھے
