I studied your SUV suggestions and purchased a 2022 Mazda CX 5 off a lease with 20,000 miles on it, and it’s a gem! The Nash/Rambler 232 and 258 cui inline 6 cylinder engines were tough as nails. I know both were still being used in AMC vehicles in the late '70's/early '80's - including Jeeps. The 232's (with a one-barrel carb) got surprisingly decent gas mileage in highway driving. The problem with AMC vehicles lay mainly in the quality (or lack thereof) of the bodies matched to those engines. AMC Gremlins, Pacers, Hornets and early Jeep CJ's....AMC used those engines everywhere.

My dad was a big Nash fan back in the day. He liked the gas mileage and the fact the front seats would fold down and he could sleep in the car on his fishing trips. I remember that they had a button under the clutch pedal to engage the starter. He got a used Rambler wagon in the early 60's that had a V8. About 250cid I think it was. Looks just like my old Austin A35 under the hood. They speed tested them on the German autobahn believe it or not and they were very reliable as long as properly maintained. I also had a 64 Rambler American with a big grunty straight 6 that I rebuilt from a pile of parts and drove all over England and Sweden in the 80's. It had a galvanised under body which is why it survived the salt on the scandinavian roads in the winter. The metropolitan was made by morris garage...MG. we actually had two and a nash cross country too. All 1954. The cross country looked just like the metropolitan, but bigger. The three were mechanically horrible. Bad everything. I remember that the linkage on the shifter would alway get crossed and we had to carry a big screwdriver in the car. (the met) it happened at traffic lights when you shifted into first. You had to quickly jump out of the car, open the hood and uncross the linkage before the people behind you got mad. Constant problems with those cars, but they are cute.

We even had these cars in New Zealand, in right hand drive of course. A couple of classy young ladies a few houses up the street had one, yellow and white 2 tone. All English cars with this engine including MGs had a 4 speed trans, so if you could find one, that would be a good upgrade.

It's like my 67 Opel Kadet, it was a 1.1 liter motor. It would get 36 mpg. Over 40 going down the mountain. Almost had to get out and help push it going back up the mountain pass. It just got hard to find parts for it. The rack and pinion steering finally gave out, and couldn't find a replacement.
