Inhalational anesthetics are used for the induction and maintenance of general anesthesia as well as sedation. The exact mechanisms by which they act are still unknown. The most common inhalational anesthetics are sevoflurane, desflurane, and nitrous oxide.

The oil gas coefficient is more closely related to the MAC value than the blood gas coefficient. This is because the oil gas coefficient reflects the lipid solubility of an anesthetic agent, which determines its potency. On the other hand, blood gas coefficient reflects the blood solubility of an anesthetic agent, which determines its onset of anesthesia.
