  • I'm actually much more of a Voidsummer or even a Voidspring kind of fellow. Join Cody as he takes a look at this epic space adventure from Mindclash Games. Will it explore the furthermost reaches of your heart on game night? Or will it just corrupt your tabletop? Let's watch!

    At this point in my life I have enough big lifestyle games. Including stuff like Earth Reborn, U-Boot, Hegemony and Fallen Land that still sit on my wall of shame.

    Big heavy games can be glorious but need the preparation that this review offers (and the 'how to play' videos you mention). There is also alot of strong competiton in the same genre, which can be hard to chose between. Well structured and useful, as usual, thank you.

    I really liked how you use the focus cards to determine your actions. I is also the best solo experience I have had in a SciFi 4x game. It is a hard game to learn, It took me probably watching Paul Rogan's hour long video four times until I felt comfortable.

    How does this compare to Europa Universalis? Heavier? Do they both feel 4x? Trying to think of which game I can add to my solo board game collection to scratch the 4x itch

      I think this one is not as complex as EU. I think there are better 4x games out there, but both of them provide very unique experience.

    Wow, you know this is a behemoth of a game when your video is double the time as your aveage video.

    I think Dune Uprising is more my style. This seems to be even more complicated than TI4.

    You need to play Exodus!
    For me Exodus puts Eclipse in the trash. But... I'm bias because I really hate Eclipse 😂
    Never played Solo/Coop but I think it has the same theme of voidfall (battling an alien race).
    The Edge of extinction expansion elevates the game. And play with the oficial movement variant, don't play with the regular movement rules.
    Great review as always! Thank you!

    Thanks for the review! I've got this one on the shelf of shame. Need to get it to the table, but the rules overload is quite intimidating. Been playing Galaxy Hunters lately which has deterministic combat also, but there's an expansion that has dice. It's worker placement with a cool mechs vs Kaiju theme. I would be interested to hear your take on that. Also, have you played/reviewed Oath yet?

    I had to buy this because Solo play was the recommended method to play by many of the fans.
    And I can see why multiplayer is a huge turn off.
    I have the game sitting in my closet till I complete Kinfire.
    Hopefully hopefully hopefully I can get myself to open the rule book and make it past page 5. I have zero tolerance for rulebooks and learning complex rules but I love to play complex games.

      @@TheDiscriminatingGamer from what I'd heard from reviewers, they can spend 80% of their review complaining about learning curve and table space... And then go ahead and rank it as top 10 games of all time. Hopefully I can see the light.

    Our group tried this twice and most of us did not enjoy the experience. Combat was overly complicated for a predetermined result, the voidborn posed no real threat and there was virtually no player interaction. Complex , boring and such a bear to setup. Surprised you liked it as much as you did. Even the cooperative mode had little appeal when we read those rules. TI4 blows this game away.

    • @TheDiscriminatingGamer
      @TheDiscriminatingGamer  Před 3 měsíci +1

      I agree that TI4 is the better game, but I don’t think they’re really trying to do the same thing.

    • @shaunouellette649
      @shaunouellette649 Před 3 měsíci +4

      Oh I agree they don't end up doing the same thing, but Voidfall markets itself as such. Back of the box states "combines the tension, grand strategy and deep empire customization of the 4X genre ...". IMHO, if you are saying you are 4X, then you are comparing yourself to TI4 as that game is the very definition of 4X.
      We didn't find any tension as everything is predetermined and there is no interaction with the other players as you could always get more points by doing something else vs attacking another player. No grand strategy either as you really just try to maximize the 3-4 action cards you use which no one else can affect. As for 4X, the one player only "expanded and exploited" one system in round 1 and then never after that and he came in 2nd place for points, demonstrating that its really just an action economy game.
      The player that owned the game said it worked well as a solo, but then do you really need a huge, expensive box with all those miniatures and other game pieces for a game that plays best solitaire?
      Other people seem to like it and that's great for them, but it was definitely a bust for most of the players in our group and there's been no real desire to try it again. Far better 4X and euro games out there with less setup and playtime, as well as more enjoyable experiences. Given that you are donating the game to your friend, that would seem to indicate you weren't that taken with it either.
      Glad to hear you think TI4 is better as I know that's one of your top games. I was pleased to see Attrition of Souls at the top of your recent video. I own it and love that game too; always play with most of the optional rules as well to give it that proper historical feel.
