I personally think the worst diet is no food
*For anyone worried about what this means for them: please understand that the food you eat does not dictate your worth and should not make you feel immoral or guilty.* If you are happy, healthy, and capable in the way your circumstances allow you to be, fuel your body without shame!! There are many systems in place that prevent people from accessing nutritious and fresh ingredients *(ex:* unclear/deceptive nutrition information and marketing, addictive additives, environmental racism, lack of/outdated nutritional education, unlivable wages, high regional food prices like in Nunavut, health issues and inaccessible spaces, *etc.).* Diet industries make MILLIONS off of food and body issues *(ex:* diet industries -- including associated drug companies -- made $78 billion in the US in 2019, obesity drug companies funded research that lowered the BMI required to be considered "overweight" from 27 to 25 in 1990, *etc.).*
*While it is beneficial to be aware of how different foods affect your brain, body, and the planet, ANY food is "good" food; ANY food is better than NO food.* Do not feel guilty if you have fast food sometimes -- everything is ok in moderation, and if life events prevent you from being moderate sometimes, that's ok too!! If you struggle with your relationship with food or your body, I'd highly recommend reading "Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program that Works" by Resch and Tribole, and listening to CZcamsrs like What Mia Did Next. Good luck everyone!!
The key part here is so long as you are healthy. There's nothing wrong with eating crap food once in a while but if you're literally killing yourself with junk food you absolutely should change up

There are lots of misunderstandings about those who struggle with food. *My stance remains that guilt and shame MUST NOT be allocated to eating, regardless of how much someone eats.* Your intentions are good - you aim to preach the benefits of caring for your health - *but how you spoke about it is counter-productive and harmful.* Bolded near the end, I'll offer more productive ways to talk to someone about their eating habits!
*"Killing yourself with junk food" insists there's a moral obligation not to eat junk food.* If weight gain or poor nutrition is the implication behind this phrase, there are many reasons someone may eat junk food as a "healthier" alternative.
• *Being BOTH underweight OR extremely obese correlates to an earlier death; both groups often eat junk food* (which is
easier/"safer" to consume) *to help them bring their weight to a more comfortable level.*
• *Cutting out junk food may be dangerous if not monitored or replaced with other foods:* fast food can cause withdrawal similar to drug addiction (relapse is likely -- think of yo-yo dieting), and too high of a calorie deficit can kill you (ex: when following high deficits at a high weight, the chances of heart failure increase drastically)
• *Fast food could help correct one's nutrition if they can't cook/access fresh ingredients* (ex: adding protein/iron to a diet) *or could be the ONLY food they can eat if they can't access treatment* (search ARFID). Regardless, "diet" foods aren't always more nutritious than fast food; they often lack nutrients and are high in sugar/chemicals.
• *Some people rely on fast-food diets due to disability or mental health issues.* If fast food is the only accessible way they can eat meals consistently, it's better than not eating at all.
• *Severe binges on "bad" foods can be a form of self-harm.* Some people understand eating certain foods can increase health risks, and choose to lean into it, because they hope to die sooner, don't think they deserve "good" foods, or to self-harm through eating to manage negative emotions. *Telling them they're "killing themselves" will increase feelings of shame/isolation, make them feel like a burden, increase their su*cidality, and ultimately encourage this behaviour.*
• *Everyone has different ideas of "too much."* Someone may eat junk food when out with friends but otherwise eat home-cooked meals -- their health issues may be unrelated, but you don't see that side of them.
*The most important point: you don't know why a person is eating junk food (even if they eat a LOT of it), and the alternative might have a MUCH worse/prolonged effect on their health than you'd expect.* It's best not to associate moral ultimatums with any diet; it only complicates others' food/health/body journeys.
*Above all, we must recognize the unhealthy relationship between eating and guilt. Every major eating disorder has links to shame/guilt:* "feelings of inefficacy or hopelessness" in anorexia, "guilt and anxiety surrounding food or eating" in bulimia, and "feelings of self-disgust, guilt, and depression" in binge eating (from NEDIC). Eating disorders are almost always a cycle of shame/guilt/anxiety associated with eating, which encourages disordered activities (binging, purging, restricting, self-harm), which ultimately makes them more shameful, resetting the cycle. *While anyone of any size could have an eating disorder, obesity is STRONGLY correlated with binge eating disorder. The 1st step to helping someone with food issues is healing their negative relationship with eating.*
*Food is associated with morality in our society; people who struggle with food are already aware of "good" and "bad" food/diets.* The media, doctors, strangers, friends and family tell them eating is "bad," whether it's "bad" food, weight, diet, or health; they see videos like this, just like you. *Shaming someone for their size or diet could push them deeper into an eating disorder and further from seeking help. The same applies if you obsess over trying to control/fix someone's size/diet. If you are concerned about someone's diet, it would be MUCH more productive to ease any guilt/shame and help them be happy during non-food-related activities. Engage with their well-being on THEIR terms.* You wouldn't "enable" them by doing so.
*PRODUCTIVE ALTERNATIVES*
*With LOVED ONES:*
• *When someone expresses discomfort with eating,* respond with "That's okay -- Do you want to talk it out?" "Is there anything I can do/say to help you feel more comfortable?" "Regardless, I'm so happy we did the (non-food-related) activity today!" or "If it helps that I'm here, do you want to try out different solutions (new meals/activities) with me?"
• *If they aren't concerned, but you are,* invite them to activities THEY enjoy that don't involve food (ex: going to the park, watching a movie, playing a game).
*External positivity may help them seek things other than food for comfort/happiness. They may also feel comfortable opening up to you so that you can direct them to therapy* (CBT or CBT-E) *or treatment services* (in/out-patient programs or nutritionists) *if applicable.*
*With STRANGERS, get to know them first (look through their content):*
• *If they DON'T seem concerned, it's best to leave them alone.* There is probably a good a reason for their attitude (ex: they are already in the process of professionally exploring their health issues, their doctor isn't concerned so they aren't either, their health issues aren't from their diet like with PCOS, there are more life-threatening events happening in their life that take priority over their diet, they eat a balanced diet offline, etc.).
• *If they DO seem concerned,* on their posts that discuss diet issues, ask "What helps you most in these moments?" and offer tips that align with what they already do (ex: if they deal with diet issues by finding a distraction, maybe ask if they'd consider a new hobby like rollerblading), or offer resources that encourage neutrality towards food (ex: What Mia Did Next and the Intuitive Eating book).
• *If they're in the process of healing their relationship with their body or food* (ex: dieting, getting treatment for an eating disorder, etc.), focus on complimenting the benefits they see -- catered to their activities -- rather than their diet/body: "I'm so excited for you! As you're more mobile you should explore new places!" or "That's amazing! You can go to concerts without feeling so tired afterwards!"
*Ultimately, if you CAN'T get to know them well enough to choose these options, leave them be. I can assure you that leaving them alone is not enabling them.* There will always be someone in their life commenting on their diet, be it doctors, friends, family, teachers, coworkers, or other strangers.
*Guilt and shame MUST NOT be allocated to eating, and by assigning morality to food (like telling someone they're killing themselves if they eat too much junk food), you will likely have a counter-productive and negative impact on them that worsens their issues with food.*
