Love you
🥁☕🙌
They started out with what many labelled metalcore but for the past 15 years or so they have moved away from that and developed their own thing. (But tbh, even their first album had a certain quality that I had never experienced before.) They talk about this musical journey in several songs, and Colors (2007) was definitely a turning point. Check out the White Walls lyrics... and the song, it's a musical journey. 😉
There is no single genre or label you can put on it, but if I had to then I'd say their music ranges from *progressive rock to progressive technical death metal.*
Can you react to "Prelude to Bereavement" by Shadow of Intent?
Andrew - make video with this - czcams.com/video/9MXb8dh-Wkw/video.html.
This guy is so under appreciated. One of the best prog drummer.
Yes Guillaume!
If BTBAM were instrumentals i’d listen to it a lot more. Vocals are meh for me. I love that 35 min play through video when its just instrumentals.
@@FanaticDrummer Vocal was "better" in their first albums up to Colors, but never was on the same level as the musicians in the band for sure. They lost me with Parallax II honestly.
@@guillaumeaudet3139 no way now how Tommy's vocals in self titled is better than parallax 2. I prefer his growls in parallax 2 over other albums. It sounds so raw and badass. Telos' intro hits you like a train.
@@gh2471 Maybe he sounded better, but his vocal patterns aren't so versatile after Colors. Sure the production was better. He's not a bad singer, I just don't like his redundant growl and his clean aren't for me.
BTBAM is really in their own genre. They remind me a lot of Mr Bungle with their genre changing transitions and some blast beats. They can compare to a lot of metal bands but tough to hold one closest.
That's a great comparison!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums carousel - Mr Bungle, Also the word you were looking for in this vid ironically.
Protest The Hero is in their near-indescribable genre. It's off of them that I first found BTBAM. Fans of cleaner vocals will rejoice (cleaner, not clean)
I’ve been a avid follower of BTBAM since 2005. I’ve seen them 20+ times live. They usually tour with Animals as leaders, The Contortionist, Good Tiger and any forward thinking musicians. They are my all time favorite band and I will go to my grave feeling/knowing that. I’ve met and have spoken with Tommy, Paul, Dan, Dusty, and Blake. They are great people.
I think I've seen them every time they've been in Atlanta since 2012ish lol. Haven't gotten to see them with Good Tiger yet, but I've seen them with both of the other groups. I fucking love The Contortionist lmao. they're always so fucking good
@@freshskittles92 that whole music scene is highly underrated.
Haken is another great band in this scene.
Nice, they are my all time favorite as well. Been listening since Colors so 2007. I remember exactly what I was doing the first time I heard that album. It was revolutionary and they have continued to push themselves further.
Lucky. Covid made me want to see them as much as I can. Seen them 3 times since September of last year
Blake has a full twitch stream playthrough of the Colors album, which he uploaded onto his CZcams channel. It's honestly worth a watch to see him not just play some of the most difficult drumming, but watch him read the damn twitch chat at the same time!!
Blake is my favourite drummer! So much talent! His writing is phenomenal 🤙
Indeed! loving it!
Parallax 1 (the ep this song comes from) is widely considered some of Blake's best work so i was hoping you came around to this song because Augment of Rebirth is probably the most fun one off of this album. Also funny you mention Dream theater because their most recent album (colors 2) actually has a guest Solo from Mike Portnoy (and several other drum giants) on the song Fix the Error
Oh wow! Thanks for the info Jordan
Honestly that time period of The Great Misdirect and Parallax I is my favorite. My problem with some btbam after this period is that they can become too riff salad. But man, the arrangements on those two collections of songs are so great.
BTBAM's influences include Dream Theater, Pantera, Counting Crows, King Crimson, and a plethora of others. They actually have a Cover Album with 14 different bands covered. The bands covered on that album will give you a good idea of their influences.
Yes, look up BTBAM - Anatomy of. They cover Metallica, Pantera, Queen, Pink Floyd, Smashing Pumpkins, etc. very cool to hear their take. Although I don’t believe it’s Blake on that album. Still phenomenal.
WOW! That is eclectic
@@Brandon-zn8rf Great Album! Also, Blake is on the album.
@@philavise6607 good to know! I wasn’t sure.💪👍
Always locked in, plays phenomenally live as well, the man doesn’t miss a beat. To play what he does non stop for an hour or more? Incredible.
It really is amazing Evan
One of the most underrated drummers out there. He’s an absolute machine and god of the drum world. And by god listen to Colors II if you haven’t already. Absolute gold in that album.
Yup! Super player
Aaaah yeah! Can’t wait for this one, Blake is the man
This is bananas
I know I'm late to this party but what really stands out to me is how masterfully he controls the tempo of the song without the riffs ever changing, absolutely amazing!
The 2 shows I've seen from them were with Russian Circles/Coheed and Cambria, and Animals as Leaders/The Contotionist a long time ago. Got an autograph from Blake and Dan(bassist) after a show, and I can confirm Blake is a biggg dude, and his presence off the drums is about the same on the drums, powerful.
Thanks for the info Brian!
Andrew - Please do BTBAM -Extremophile Elite. You would love the song, the drumming, and it shows the full band.👍💪 Keep up the great work!
Thanks Brandon!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums I second this!
Also this is the video he's referring to, which yes you should definitely select for the reaction: czcams.com/video/dM8WjgRA6o8/video.html
I have never been as sweaty as I was the first time I saw BTBAM. Best fucking live band out there, so much fun to join their freak circus for and hour and a half, especially if you know their songs. Please do Specular Reflection off the same EP! In my humble opinion this might be the most ridiculously awesome drum track ever written.
LOVE IT
Some of my favorite bands under the prog umbrella that are a bit off the wall are Protest The Hero, Thank You Scientist, and Jinjer! All have some songs worth checking out for cool arrangements and fills.
They really dialed in this type of sound with their 2007 album Colors. Their previous albums leaned less into the prog and fusion elements than their stuff from Colors on forth. I would also add that the album Coma Ecliptic kind of saw them pull back on all of that and try to go in a somewhat different direction. After that, they immediately went back to the sound present in this video and have since stuck to the formula diligently. They are a top tier band for sure.
Native Construct is a band that made an album called Quiet World right on par with BTBAM. They are all formally trained guys so the compositions are remarkable but I think the drums are programmed.
this
I concur. Good stuff. The drums sound a little extra digital/ inhuman in most of it though
Check out his playthrough of 'Obfuscation' he did on his channel a long time ago. One of the goats
I will Brian!
Every song is an album and you should treat yourself to the whole album. It's a nod to every rock and metal note ever played. They write such musically dense pieces, it blows my mind.
When btbam got Blake right before Alaska, Tommy and Paul definitely played with him and said "fuck yes" out loud.
Incredible player
i've been waiting MONTHS for this LETS GOOOOOOOOOO
🙌
Blake Richardson used to drum for a band called Glass Casket before joining BTBAM. You should react to some of those songs!!!!
This is one of my absolute favorite BTBAM songs for the ways they re-contextualize the section starting at 12:05 in this vid (6:24 in the Blake vid). The way they are able to take the a singular melody/progession, which literally starts on an accordion, and then carry it through multiple different styles/arrangements is just absolutely nutty. They are endlessly inventive.
Also love the faces you make whenever he does a blast beat lol.
I think it's time to get back to some Blake reactions. They released some new live playthroughs that are amazing. I highly recommend the one for FIX THE ERROR off the new Colors 2 album. It is so good.
As much as I love the entire BTBAM catalogue - Parallax 1 is always gonna be my go-to for just off the wall insanity when it comes to Blake's performance. He outdid himself on it and it's only 3 tracks. P2 is my favourite album, but P1.... Man.
Great reaction. I found out about these guys around the same time as Protest the Hero. Their drummer's a beast too. Definitely worth a check out
Awesome. Thank you David!
I've watched this video so many times now and it still amuses me. You really should check out "The Ectopic Stroll" from the album Coma ecliptic. It's madness and there's a drum cam video too. Blake smashes it once again.
Cheers!
P1 is so underrated
Can't believe I've been watching ya for a year or so and never realized you covered Blake. So much more to come. You could study this dude for years
Check candiria!
Done a few on him from memory. One might have been blocked available to the patrons
The thing that amazes me the most about Blake Richardson is how calm and relaxed he looks doing all that. He makes it look effortless. Every drummer has a face they make when they’re straining a bit. I’ve never seen his expression change. Writing and playing that is one thing. Making it look effortless is something else entirely.
The drummer and one of the guitarist were in a band called Glass Casket. Check out Between the Sheets. It’s really good. Not as proggy, but still has these elements and solid.
His Tom tone is absolutely beautiful. Love that sound.
Agree John!
Excited for this review. Love me some BTBAM!
Excellent!
There are no other bands in BTBAMs universe. In my opinion, this is the most important most unkown band. Absolute geniuses light years ahead of anyone else and widely unknown. So unfortunate they dont get the acclaim they deserve.
Bands in the same Vein: Periphery, The Contortionist, Tesseract, Animals as Leaders, Haken, Devin Townsend, Opeth, Soen, Caligula's Horse, etc etc etc :P
Nice info Jason! 👌
Enjoyed these guys in 2007 when the played with dream theater, opeth, and 3. Fantastic live!
They stand alone paved there own road. Seen them in Cleveland a while back they had converge periphery and job for a cowboy open for them. Also Blake set his own kit up no roady. He is top 3 drummer hands down such a amazing drum machine
And Blake records all that hooblah without any scratch guitar tracks...that's what blows my mind...
Yeah, I believe Paul Just said that on the great misdirect making of Video. Correct me if i am wrong. This is even more mindblowing If you know how hard it is to play their music...
If you want a fun one you could see Alex Rüdinger play Obfuscation, which was originally written by Blake Richardson. Alex did the transcribing of the drums for that album.
You totally need to check out Federico Paulovich - Destrage. Supremely talented drummer and a lovely guy to boot.
Destrage is rad
I've seen these guys live 7 times so far I think. They always put on an amazing show. An incredible live band. I'm a guitar player but I catch myself watching Blake a good portion of the show haha Definitely one of my favourite drummers
Bands "like" BTBAM: (closer to their older sound) Ed Gein, Glass Casket, Number 12 Looks Like You, Arsonists Get All the Girls, War from a Harlot's Mouth. (Closer to their newer sound) Devin Townsend Project, Animals as Leaders, the Contortionist, Opeth, Mastodon.
Honestly the closest band I've found in FEEL and aesthetic to BTBAM is Native Construct
Those time changes are nuts! Like you said...."50 song in one"! 🤘🏼🥁🤘🏼
Yup! This is mad
hi Andrew all the way from upstate NY, USA. Love your channel. You've exposed me to not only great drummers but their great bands as well. Peace & Love -keep up the good work!
Not too many people on the planet that can drum like that very interesting and fun vid Andrew 👍👍🥁
That's for real!
I'm a simple man: I see anything from Blake Richardson or BTBAM, I like.
GREAT!
The band has alot of songs breaking 10 mins in runtime this man is a literal machine. "Their doing it all." That really sums BTBAM up without getting too technical . :)
Man. I can't even remember when I'm supposed to cross stick.
I feel ya Richard LOL
Blake has his own CZcams, as well as a Twitch that he streams on occasionally. He's a friggin joy to watch. I also recommend their "The Making of" videos. His recording process is "Play immaculately, make a small mistake, SCREAM, repeat" and it's a joy to watch, because meeting him IRL he's the kindest and most easy going soul.
If you want to know the kinds of bands they tour with, I have seen them live eight times.
First time they were touring with Opeth and Dream Theater, but sadly Dream Theater skipped the stop I went to.
Then they were touring with In Flames (The Faceless were there too. You should check out their song An Autopsy. Such an amazing drummer!)
Then with Mastadon (This was the only show where the crowd wasn't very receptive to BTBAM). I've also seen them headline three times with bands like Job For a Cowboy and Animals as Leaders.
And lastly I saw them headline the Summer Slaughter Tour. Great reaction, dude! Thanks for posting posting!!
the dear hunter also
One of the best in the game, let there be no doubt.
SO GOOD!
It appears that yes you have done one of these. Good to see a lot of people recommending Colors as well.
This band ... I remember I first heard in like 2004 ish. I was so mesmerized they really put the coolest energy behind their songs.. every song is an adventure or like a part of an adventure it feels like.

They really are a band to their own self... but they have toured with many great bands over the years. I've been a diehard for this band since I discovered them when I was living in NC in 2003. In the 19 times I've seen them over the years, these are the more notable bands I can remember seeing them tour with:
Dream Theater, Scale the Summit, the Devin Townsend Project, Job For A Cowboy, Cynic, The Faceless (years ago when Alex Rüdinger was their drummer), The Safety Fire, Dragonforce, Norma Jean, Children of Bodom, the Black Dahlia Murder, Bleeding Through, Every Time I Die, Killswitch Engage, Protest the Hero, In Flames, Lamb of God, Hatebreed, August Burns Red, Veil of Maya, Periphery, Animals as Leaders, Coheed and Cambria, The Contortionist, Born of Osiris, and ERRA.
I mentioned Alex Rüdinger by name as he's a drummer I think has been underappreciated for a long time. Alex has a channel where he posts tons of covers as well as songs he's recorded with the many bands he's worked with over the years. Several years ago he recorded and toured with Whitechapel and finally got a lot of recognition for how excellent a drummer he is.
Thank you so much for doing this. One of my favorite drum videos!
Awesome Thom!!
Thanks for watching... please be sure to sub! 🥁+ ☕️ = 🙌
before watching I know you're gonna enjoy this!!!
Simply amazing drummer
@@AndrewRooneyDrums totally! I've tried to study Blake's playing and learn a few songs, incredibly difficult material but it's not a "riff-salad" like some criticize the band for. Their songs are well thought out and creative, albeit a lot to take in on first listen. Blake's really elevated the Neil Peart/Mike Portnoy style of prog metal playing to his own level.
He leads tons of fills with his left hand and has some really interesting stickings and phrasings he uses a lot. For example instead of the typical triplet floor tom fill "dump" like RLRK, he'll play KKLR. I also respect him for his humility, on his Twitch stream he jokingly said he ripped off most of his drumming from Mike Portnoy LOL.
Great video! You already figured the signature BTBAM style, they got enough riffs for 10 songs but they make one 10-minute song. To me, their biggest achievement is connecting all that stuff into one cohesive song. This gotta be progressive metal because of all the dynamics and tempo changes, but few bands make such dense songs.
Ants of the Sky is my personal favorite. He breaks my brain too! My dad and I are both drummers and he is old school rock and roll, whereas I'm more newer metal and we both sit in awe of Blake.
And yes, every song is this intense. Love these guys 🔥✨
Blake is an absolute beast. The dude is so amazing. I can't get enough of your reactions of him. And yes all of their songs are like this. They're the only band I know of that's used a slide whistle in their music before and make it work lol.
HAHA! Gotta love a slide whistle. These guys are amazing
@@AndrewRooneyDrums absolutely lol. They've been my favorite band for a long time now. They're definitely one of a kind.
Seeing your reaction to blake, priceless.
Yo thanks Mikey! lol
I listen to a lot of drummers and yet you continually introduce me to drummers. I love your channel. Thank you
Happy to hear that! Thank YOU!
Great reaction. I've been listening to these fellas for a long time now. This may very well be my favorite song by them. It's quintessential in my eyes. I mean the section that starts at 2:42 alone makes this my favorite. Then the section/breakdown at 5:00? C'mon. Blake is a beast.
YES. You replied to an old comment of mine a couple days ago about the Parallax Hypersleep Dialogues EP, I KNEW you were gonna do a song on it. Fantastic! But yeah, I love Blake. The dude is a machine, he writes these insanely creative and intricate parts that fit BTBAM's music just perfectly. Fun fact, not only does Blake obviously come up with these crazy ideas, but when he gets in the studio he literally just goes in there with the producer and bangs out the drums for an entire album in less than a week. And I'm talking about their LPs that are over an hour of music, he's able to just go in there and pull it from his brain and put it onto a recording in amazingly quick time. There's also a massive amount of his drumming on CZcams, and he played through the entire "Colors" album + an encore on a twitch stream a year or two ago as well. At 10:34, you mention how he looks like a big guy and his sticks look small. Yes, this is an older video at this point but he actually got even more shredded a few years after this. If you check out the performance of Extremophile Elite live at the Fideletorium you'll see. He used to use Buddy Rich signature sticks, which are pretty beefy and he still made them look small, before getting a signature stick.
at 15 minutes, you ask what type of concert they would be a part of. They've played with pretty much every type of rock/metal band you could think of. From the most brutal death metal stuff, to prog, to classic metal like Slayer, to big festivals with dozens of bands from all types of genres. Their music is incredibly diverse and has so many influences outside of metal, because of that they've been on tours where their music doesn't even really fit the bill.
I could go on about Blake for days, but I'm glad you're showing him some love.
That's awesome Eric. Thank you so much for the passion and info!
Haha he’s so good, and seems like a great guy too. I always talk about the time I saw them live and Blake had the flu, but still played amazingly…despite throwing up once between songs.
Oh damn!
Watch "Colors Live". It's an incredible concert to say the very least
Blake is a fucking machine! BTBAM is a banging band.
Very nice perspective on music. I will subscribe and wish to see the blocked video. It's gotta be good. Loved this band for a long time. Can't wait to see your perspective on it. 🤙
The only band in their “orbit” as I see it is a not so well known band named Native Construct. They released one album about 7 years ago then disbanded. They recorded in their dorm at Berklee. BTBAM actually were responsible for native construct getting signed to their label for their single release. Really incredible album. I believe their drummer has a few play throughs on CZcams still, his name is James Knoerl. My favorite song is chromatic aberration, and it’s probably their technical best, but it’s about 12 minutes long.
Thanks for the info! 🙏
I had to sift through the comments and find you again to thank you. I just listened to Mute by Native Construct because of you and it was fucking awesome. Can't wait to hear the whole album
@@nastyrex4302 absolutely dude. You’ll love it.
Trying to find a related sound with BtBam is essentially impossible. Every member in the band is a master of their instrument, of which I currently only can say I feel the same with in Haken of England and Ne Obliviscaris of Australia
Thank you for another Between the Buried and Me reaction!
You bet Chris!
This has been my undisputed favorite band since they released ALASKA. I'm blown away every time they put out an album. I also never miss a tour. Soon they will be touring with Thank You Scientist which is another great prog band.
7:06 hahahaha love the self deprecating humor
Please do Chris Kontos of Machine Head performing "Rage to Overcome " 2020 live drum cam.
I'll get there!
saw them live with The Contortionist -also epic!
Amazing drummer and has an amazing sounding HH ride but the total sound is amazing too!!!
Couldn't agree more!
That drumming is insane
That Nightrider shirt flippin rules
YES!!!
Just watched this for the first time since and was gonna make the same comment again… lmao
Bands I've seen BTBAM with:
Dream Theater
Opeth,
3 (Three)
Mastodon
Baroness
Valient Thorr
and yes it has been 11 years since I've seen them last.
Thx for this Andrew! every day waiting for your vids!!
Thank you Rauno!
There are really no bands in BtBaM's universe: their wacky all-over-the-place style of metal is pretty unique (among mainstream artists, at least). Def influenced by Dream Theater, Tool, King Crimson, among many, many others. They often play with prog metal bands like Polyphia, Animals as Leaders, and The Contortionist, but I've also seen them bill with really heavy stuff like The Faceless, Cannibal Corpse, and Veil of Maya.
Excellent Kevin!
I'm not familiar with this guy either but I am now... thanks man! He's amazing! Keep up the good work Andrew
Imagine what Akerfeldt could do with Blake (now that Axenrot is gone) \m/
Great call JC 👌
They play with groups like Animals as Leaders, The Contoursionist. Great live shows
Thanks for the info Ross.
Sounds like a great gig
Bands that I've seen on tour with BTBAM:
Animals As Leaders, Polyphia, The Contortionist, TesseracT, The Devin Townsend Project, Fallujah, Astronoid, Lazer/Wulf, Toothgrinder, Intronaut, Enslaved, Native Construct, The Faceless, Meshuggah, Dragonforce, Three, Opeth, and Dream Theater. I didn't really start tracking who I've seen live until about 2006, so there were other local bands that I can't remember.
Wow. I'd love to see them and Opeth
Haken is one of the bands that sit in this world of music.
I know you've done one of their tunes before (Earthrise) but that is basically their "radio song".
Try Nil By Mouth or 1985 to get a great idea of what they do.
Cheers Anzac 🤘
Mate! You gotta do yourself a favor and give their new album a listen. It is a tour de force. It's called Colors II. And yes they aren't afraid to get whimsical. They don't take themselves too seriously.
But really, check out the new album. It's a whole new level for Between the Buried and Me.
Love the videos.
Blake gets better and better the more you watch
You are correct, the majority of their songs are like multiple songs into one opus creation. But those songs still fit together like a puzzle. Every time they come out with a new album it takes me 10-20 spins before I can even start to appreciate what I’m listening to. But once you start learning the songs the appreciation for what you’re hearing is something I can’t even describe. That’s what makes BTBAM my favorite band of all time.
I love your videos for a long long time! i'm a drummer and i enjoy teachers like me reacting some AMAAAZIIING DRUMMER. I reach to Black Richardson for YEARS and he is underated he is one of the greatest drummers of all time! and Between the Buried And Me is one of the GREATES BAND'S of all time!
You have to watch Matt Garstka - Monomyth (Drum Playthrough) is A MASTERPIECE!
Keep this good work Andrew! i really like this stuff!!
Cheers from Argentina!
If you haven’t already you should check out Above by Danny Walker (Intronaut). He’s since been replaced by Alex Rudinger & Matt Lynch, but he wrote some amazing stuff with them.
