My home state, Rhode Island, in the person of Gina Raimondo (and a host of others in state government), took the cost of living adjustment away from public service retirees. Union leaders and much of the rank and file fell into line in this financial grab. That Raimondo is Biden’s secretary of commerce tells much about how far to the right the Democrats have moved. A guess, having been involved for decades in the political system, is that there is no easy way out of this right-wing juggernaut.

I think the mistake here is that Dan assumes that a movement away from progressive politics is somehow a "fall" but it doesn't appear that way when you are there. Being from Minnesota we're supposed to hate people from Wisconsin, well not really hate, it's a rivalry. However, I have friends in Wisconsin so I'm there often and it is a beautiful place, with friendly towns and diverse cities. There is also a strange notion of labor = unions. Well, come on, that's not true. Remember, FDR, probably the most union friendly president ever, reminded everyone that unions are very much needed, however, unionizing public workers was crazy. That would pit the workers against the people, the taxpayers. That would be an untenable situation. Wisconsin isn't perfect, that's why I live in Minnesota, that's a joke, but it's not a bad place to live.
