Katarina really grew as an artist. her line compared to when she started is incredible. everything she does is perfectly timed to the music. She skates WITH the music and not over it. I love this program, a Sandra Bezic classic.
I remember when she was performing we, the kids, would run home to watch her. I am from Croatia and remember her first gold in Sarajevo! Nice memories. Always great to see her performing, talking. Simply - the Diva!
I felt like she was hammered down too much on presentation. They only thing that was missing from this program was the difficult lutzes and flips. I would've given her at least 5.8s for artistic impression
Another factor is she skated REALLY early. Like two hours before any of the main contenders. That also affected her scores, in addition to only a triple toe combo. Gordeeva & Grinkov also skated early, but not nearly this early (plus they were the clear and far away favorites so it didn't matter).
She was the second on ice that evening so the judges did not rush with high marks. 4.9 by the US judge was probably a revenge for the American lost golds in 1984 and 1988.
1) Rossalyn and Debi did not lose gold, they both made multiple mistakes so they did not deserve the win 2) I completely agree, she was hammered down so much, it's not even funny. The presentation was superior than any other skater in these Olympics, I would've given her at least 5.8s for that category, and around a 5.3 for technical merit. 4.9 would've been for people who missed a required element or had more than one fall, which she did none of those
