I don't think it's just "something", it's specifically a penis shaped object. They did mention that sticking a penis shaped object up there is gay (as I guess it would lead you to believe a man is doing it to you), but they did mention multiple times that a girl putting her finger in there or other non penis shaped items in there would not be gay. It's also JK news so it's all for a laugh and not to be taken literally.

I also get that some of the things they say shouldn’t be taken fully seriously but also I feel like in general people have moved past the “fellas is it gay to enjoy this form of sex with your woman?” so it feels a little bit reductive for them to labour over it.

If a man’s biggest concern about pegging is “don’t use a penis shape because that’s gay” then there’s still some unresolved issues there. It’s a rubber object used for pleasure and at the end of the day it’s a man and woman having sex, so there’s no reality in which it would be considered gay.
